Help with NES system

a co-worker gave me his NES to clean.  i Have cleaned 4 of these already with out any issues.  I know people have differnet methods on how to clean he Nes.  I remove the 72 pin con, and i do boil it. and i use brasso.  I use brasso on the motherboard connectors.  then i use rubbing alcohol to clean off the brasso.  I do the same on the 72 pin con,  boil, brasso, rubbing alcohol.  then let everything completely dry.  The issue is, there was a bent pin on the 72. then i made it more bent, lol.  the pin was way off from being in line, and the top "fork " of the pin was pretty bad .  I did get it straighten out and it looks good and in line with all the other pins.  This is a pin that the carts fit on, and carts fit good on it.   Now hooking it back up to the tv,  I try a game I know works fine with zero trouble.  The game has sound, but no video.  i am using the rca video hookups.  The strange thing is that when i turn on MY NES, not the nes in question,  with no game.  the no signal icon on my tv goes away. When i turn on the NES in question, with or without a game. the NO SIGNAL on my tv stays on.  like i said with a game there is sound but no video, and my tv is not even reading a video signal.  I am doubting, but would the bent pins would not have anything to do with this?  and just replacing the 72 fix this?

  • I've heard brasso is to abrasive. That bent pin might damage games (scratching the contacts).

    Did you try rf?
  • Try the RF cable. If it doesn't work, try replacing the capacitors.

I also recommend looking to see if you didnt accidently tear off some solder or something when cleaning the pins. If there is sound, then the pins definitley arent an issue.

  • i finally found an rf. I do get video through the rf. i am no tech expert, but i took the board out and looked for any broken solders. I can not see anything off hand. i never did hook it up before I took it apart, like a fool. But he did tell me he did have it hookup through the rca cables. any help?
  • Sounds like a broken connection. If you have a multimeter it's a lot easier to check for them. Sometimes bad connections can be impossible to find with your eyes alone. The only problem is multimeters are a little on the expensive side.

Unless you opened the entire RF sheilding on the video outputs, you will not really see many broken connections. If you can post pictures of the circut board, maybe we can help find any problemed connections.

  • did you try cleaning inside the AV connection with a q tip it could just be dirty.

even if its dirty, there should be at least some signs of life. Its not a Digital data connection, it doesnt need a perfect connection to minimally operate
