Super Mario RPG not working - missing metal tab?

So I'm not quite as technical as I wish, but it appears that the problem with this Super Mario RPG is that a metal tab is missing that contacts a square portion of the board (you can clearly see the one on the left missing). My question is...is this something you can buy or do I need to take one from another game? I currently don't have any junk extras that have this, but I'd like to get it working or possibly sell it to someone that feels like going through the extra effort to fix this issue. Thoughts? Anyone have this issue before? Pics:

  • Those only came with one.
  • Hmmm strange, wonder why it doesn't work......
  • Yeah, over the years I learned about the metal tabs missing not being a big deal since there are several instances one was only in place. Stinks you can't get the game to work though. I once had a Bucky o Hare for the Nes that never would work. I cleaned and cleaned. Even took it back to the store only to later buy it again and it eventually worked and I never had another issue with it. Some games are just temperamental I think.
  • Does anything happen when you power on the console? If you get a black screen that means at least the SA1 is communicating with the CIC in the console so the cart is not completely dead.

If you TV stays on its no signal screen that means the SA1 is not communicating with the CIC in the console, might need to move the Mask ROM to a donor in that case.

If you are getting a black screen I would suggest replacing the SRAM and see if that helps, it is a standard part that you can get from mouser or digikey.

If you want to send cart I could take a shot at fixing it.
  • Hmm ok, maybe I will try my hand at replacing the SRAM. Is this a challenging task? I guess I'll have to figure out exactly what SRAM chip I need?

    Also, thanks for the input!
  • If you have a hot air station that is the easiest way to remove the SRAM, if not take a look at my Star Fox 2 tutorial to see how I did it before I got a hot air station.

Mario RPG uses 256k SRAM this is a good one, it is the ultra low power just like the original SRAM so it will not kill your battery while not in the console
