[SOS] Problem with EverDrive N8 NES on AV Famicom

Hi,

I'm trying to use my Krikzz's EverDrive N8 NES on an AV Famicom via a NES-to-Famicom adaptor. However, most games show graphical glitches and eventually crashes. Slightly moving the cart sometimes helps, but not fully. Here is the adaptor, recently purchased on eBay:

Used with my NES cart, it works fine, except for an unlicensed-Chinese-pirate-multigame cart, where I get some graphical glitches. The EverDrive itself works perfectly, as shown in my NES. The AV Famicom seems to read properly all my Famicom carts.

I've tried cleaning & re-inserting the adaptor, but haven't succeed. Has anyone experienced such problem? How could it be solved? Is it true that some adaptors doesn't work with EverDrive N8 NES? Does anyone know of an NES-to-Famicom adaptor working on AV Famicom with EverDrive N8 NES?

Thank you very much in advance! Cheers!

  • Do you think it would HAVE to be an issue with the adapter? They weren't all created equal after all. I have the Famicom and NES ED but usually end up using the NES with an adapter into my Famicom like you. However, the one you linked I have never had experience with, and I have 3-5 others that all work flawlessly.
  • Hi, Yelir,

    Thank you for your response.

As a matter of fact, yes, I do think it is due to the adaptor since the ED works great on my PAL Creation NES-clone. But I'd rather prefer using it on my new AV Famicom to get rid of that 50Hz curse here in Europe we were condemned to... ;-)

Please, could you tell me where did you purchase whatever NES-to-FC adaptor working with NES ED on your Famicom? This could be quite helpful, though you don't own an AV Famicom. I know that the one from Tototek (http://www.tototek.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=147) works on AV Famicom, but it still remains to know whether it works with NES ED.

    Thank you so much!
  • Isn't the 50/60hz difference a pain? I'm still waiting for the day that I can play some PAL NES games without the sped up sound, and some SNES titles won't run at all due to the change.

I can't say that I've tried any converter without some type of outer shell, although I admit they could have been a similar board. To be clear, I have tried the Micro Genius, Honey Bee and a few others on my Famicom, AV Famicom and Twin Famicom systems all with success.
  • Thank you very much! I'll take this data into consideration.

    Currently, I think I have 3 options:

    1) Getting a new, compatible adaptor.

    2) Try modding mine's (although I'm not sure it works).

    3) Changing my ED-N8 NES by a Famicom version (maybe, the best solution).

We'll see how it finally ends up...

    Cheers!
  • You'll have to mod the adapter. I'll open mine up tonight and post instructions. It's just two wires that needs to be soldered. No biggie.
  • Hi greybox,

I'll be very grateful if you could post exactly how you have made it.

I checked the mod possibility here:

    http://nerdlypleasures.blogspot.com/2014/10/famicom-av-issues-and-solutions.html

However, I'm not completely sure that such mentioned pairs of pins are connected. I mean, in my adaptor Famicom pins 48-49 and NES pins 57-58 are linked by a clearer green connection in the PCB, but there doesn't seem to be any metal connection linking each pair. In addition, I tested some of the reported games (After Burner, Castlevania III and Gauntlet), only the latter freezing after a gameplay period. My main concern regarding the adaptor mod is that it could deteriorate it and render it useless in case it is not necessary to be performed...

So my questions are: Do you think those pin pairs are really connected in my adaptor? Have you experienced similar issues than me when using your adaptor with EverDrive?

    Thank you very much!
  • Sorry, I forgot to open up my adapter but that site you linked to shows the exact mod you need to perform. If Castlevania III works with your adapter then the EverDrive should too...
  • No problem!

By the way, here are a couple of pics of my adaptor's PCB:

Please, could anyone confirm if it ACTUALLY has Famicom pins 48-49 and NES pins 57-58 connected?

I have the same adapter you have and you can see in the second pic that famicom pins 48-49 are in fact bridged together.  Not sure if this is what is causing the issue you are having.  I have my cart modified so that those are seperated and 2 wires run to nes pins 57 and 58.

I also have an av famicom but I have the everdrive famicom version which works great.
  • Thanks for the info, ginoscope!

So, definitely the solution could be the mod. Before proceeding, just a simple question: NES pins 57-58 are also linked, right? This consideration is for proper pin numbering, I'm not so familiar with this issue...

No problem at all here is a picture of how the mod should look from an old thread on nintedoage.  Look at the sixth post and it shows the exact same converter that we own.

  • Wow! This is the very picture I was hoping to get! Now everything is perfectly clear, this is my adaptor and exactly my case. I'll proceed with the mod asap and post my results.

Thank you very much again, ginoscope! You saved my life, dude! :-)
  • Bad news, guys...

Just carried out the mod, but didn't get rid of the problem. In addition, a background hum sound showed up when using the adapter. Even checking the mod out and re-cutting the linked pins, I cannot fix it. :-(

Well, at least I've tried... Maybe the best solution is getting an ED-N8 Famicom version. :-\
