I remember playing Mortal Kombat 1 on the PC back in the days, and i thought that the game was pretty cool to play back then I dont know how fun the game is to play today though, since it has been quite a while since i have played it.
I didnt really have too much experience with other similar "1-VS-1" (or what i shall call it) fighting games though, so maybe that is why i think the game was cool.
But ye, looking back now on the technical stuff around Mortal Kombat, maybe the game wasnt so great when it comes to the controls etc. And i agree that the gore and fatalities is one of the main factors that many people know which game Mortal Kombat is
Jesus Christ, I make a thread about Sega vs. SNES games and this turns into a Mortal Kombat bashing thread. If you have nothing to add to the thread then please don't post because quite frankly I don't want to read your bullshit pseudo-intellect about why it's a shitty game. Mortal Kombat was THE FIRST GAME IN THE SERIES, yet it had to compete with Street Fighter TWO. SF came in out 1987 and it took them FIVE YEARS to come up with the sequel. Gee thanks Capcom for being so innovative and appreciating your customers!
MK was essentially made by two people and was what started the now bankrupt company of Midway. It took them ONE MEASLY YEAR to put out Mortal Kombat II which is hands down my favorite fighting game of all time. No "charging" your move looking like a dumbass like people do when they are crouching with Guile. Oh the flash kick is coming? I never would have thought!!
The first game is a series is rarely good. Yet do you see people posting about how bad Super Mario Bros was compared to the sequels? How much the original TMNT sucked? No....
If you want to discuss Sega / SNES games then by all means do. If you want to create a MK debate thread then feel free to do that do. There's a time and a place, no need to derail this thread.
Keep in mind, MK1 was a very early pioneer of digitized photorealistic sprites. Before that we had the absolutely TERRIBLE "Pit Fighter" and that's about it.
Some of the guys that Boon and Tobias gathered were pretty good, too. Ho Sung Pak was in Legend of the Drunken Master, TMNT and the short-lived but cool WMAC Masters show.
MK1 play control was frustrating, esp on the SNES, and not a "deep" fighting game. Keep in mind though, we're looking back from very technical games like MvC2, the Soul Calibur series, and of course SF4.
Back in the day, the depth of technique came from a more realistic standpoint - the length and angle of your kicks and punches! Each character may have felt the same, and the only options you saw were superficial - high kick, low punch, etc. But within that, some characters were good at anti-air attacks, some had killer jump kicks, some had very penetrating standing attacks, etc. If you could time it right and knew your ranges, you could dismantle a newbie handily.
So I came into the thread looking for a comprehensive list of genny exclusives vs SNES exclsuives, I guess one doesn't exist yet? At least with unique titles, I understand many of the games are same-title/different-play but it would be interesting what games simply have no port one way or another.
I think I'll work on it this afternoon, we'll see what's on both ends of it. They'll probably be longer lists than any of us realize though, especially on the Nintendo side.
It's my personal opinion that the term "derail" is being overused on this forum. Talking about the differences between the versions of any game that was on SNES or Genesis seems completely on-topic to me. If that game happens to be Mortal Kombat, which does stand out as being a highly notable "same game with different features"... why is that so offensive?
I don't mean to argue whether or not this particular thread contains a derailing offense, but there may be better ways to bring people back to your topic without seeming like you're coming unhinged and that people should seriously consider the consequences of posting in a thread on this forum lest they get bitched out for not being exactly in-line with the original post.

Now this is what I'm talking about. I was thinking about putting together a list myself, but I just hadn't had the time recently. I think this list would be great and might even help point out some "expensive" titles on each system that had limited print runs.
This list would be huge! I started to make one and there is already QUITE a few, and I only made it #-A lol So far:

^ AD&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun Genesis. You can actualy use the dpad to move in caves, and are imprisoned in first person mode the entire game, like eye of the beholder.
Yep Herbalist, I had my side-by-side all set up and then I realized how futile and really useless the list would be.
More useful would be Genesis-only arcade ports, or genesis-only COMPLETELY unique games that aren't on other systems...but I don't feel like doing those so nyah
A bit OT, but even though I'm fairly sure Contra III is the measuring stick of pure Contra awesomeness, Contra Hard Corps for Genesis is one of the finest games I have ever played on any system. It's fast pace, multiple paths, awesome mode-7-esque graphic effects (a milestone for Gen hardware) and rediculous difficulty make it stand out as a staple of the Genesis library and genra as a whole.
This, Hyperstone Heist, Bloodlines and others all harken back to a better era, imo, where platform differences were actually meaningful and tangible.
Current gen platform difference debates degenerate into little more than almost undetectable framerate or anti aliasing differences, almost unworthy of reading.

P.S. Lets all relax.
