Oujia boards

What is your opinion on them? Are they possible evidence for the existence of demons, or are people just crazy?

Why? I would be inclined to agree with you if my topics about religion, the supernatural, and the paranormal were uncivilized, but they aren't.

I see no problem with it.
  • I in no way believe they are uncivilized I just think they are bringing out negativity in many people including my self. I in no way am attacking you as a person just these kind of topics one shouldn't talk about. Religion, politics, money ect ect.
  • I don't see why we shouldn't talk about these things. Religion and politics have had, and continue to have, such a strong influence on our world, our culture, and on ourselves, that it I believe it is wrong not to talk about them.

I respect your desire to not want to talk about these things. That's your prerogative, and I'm certainly not forcing you to participate in my topics.

That said, I fail to see how these kinds of topics bring out negativity in people. I suppose that my topic about what it would take for an atheist to acknowledge the existence of god(s) kind of brought out some negativity in some of the folks here, but even that wasn't too bad.

I actually think that rather than bringing out negativity within each of us, topics like these bring intelligent, civil discussion, particularly on a forum with people as friendly as the ones here.
  • Well in the end your topics generally divide NA into two separate groups. However that's not what we are. NA is a tight knit community where you can talk about video games regardless of race, religion, sexual preference what ever. I agree with you %100 that it is wrong to NOT talk about these topics but there is a time and place for it. That being said I don't believe that place is on a Nintendo forum. At any rate your free to do what you want im just warning you. I have a feeling some people will protest this topic as well.

    Ciao.

    ~Chris
  • I am reminded of the cliche saying "You can't please everybody".

As far as the dividing of the people here at NA goes, I fail to see how that goes on. If by division you mean disagreements, then sure, and that is to be expected, because we are only human. Moreover, disagreement is the very thing that makes discussion interesting; I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want everyone to agree with everything that I was saying all the time.

And while this is a place dedicated to Nintendo gaming, there is also a place to chat about whatever is on your mind -- Everything Else. If the mods have some kind of qualm about my spree of topics, they haven't expressed discontent with them so far.

If they do, however, I will desist.

Finally, I want to close by saying (no offense to anyone here at all, I think the community at NA is extremely mature and tolerant, and that is much more than you can say about a lot of other forums, nay, a lot of people in general) that if someone gets offended by my topics, they don't have to partake in the discussion contained therein. Not only that, but it certainly isn't my fault if people become immature and intolerant, and subsequently begin needlessly bickering amongst themselves (as opposed to civilized discussion, which is the way it should be), because of these kinds of topics.

    Clowns are scarier. >_<
  • You're like our very own Art Bell, Nirvana. image

This IS the Everything Else board, so I don't have any problem with the topics. If I did? Wouldn't post in 'em. And if everyone did, they wouldn't post in 'em either, and they'd stop getting made. In my ever so humble opinion, of course.

That said, I did use a Ouija board successfully once with some friends about ten years ago. I thought it was pretty neat, and I knew enough to tell everyone else if we did feel like we'd contacted something, to never invite it in or to stick around.
  • I enjoy your threads, Nirvana. I rarely if ever comment in them, but they always make me think. Keep them coming.
  • yeah opening doors you dont know how to close is unwise IMHO
  • Oujia boards strike me as the same kind of concept as Voodoo. It's real if you believe in its power.

There have been a number of psychology studies done to prove the effects of Voodoo shamans on populations of people that believed in their magic. Oujia boards work in a similar way.

I don't think you're opening a gateway to another dimension, or anything. But I do think that any type of attempted sorcery/magic is generally a bad idea.
  • These topics are fine in this category.

As for Ouija boards... just don't throw yours away or it might just come back!
  • That movie Witchboard was great on the subject of Ouija boards. The original, not the 2 crappy spinoffs.

Oh and to the person who mentioned Art Bell... you rock sir!!!!!!! I used to stay up late every night in college listening to Art Bell back when Art Bell was Art Bell not the replacement. I just don't find it to be the same with George Nori as it used to be with Art.

Ditto.  I'm not really for or against paranormal activity, but I sure as hell won't go looking for it either.  The farthest I've went was saying Red Rum three times in front of a mirror in a dark room when I was a kid and that's about as far as I'm going.

The only questions I have are 1) How the hell do you pronounce "Oujia" (is it Wee-Gee?) and 2) What's the purpose of the game (I've never played).  Is it just to communicate with the deceased?

  • It's pronounced "Wee-Gee" as far as I know.

The purpose of the game is to summon a spirit/ghost/demon to talk to you via the board. Usually, somebody in the group pushes the game piece without others knowing who did it. Supposedly, if people genuinely don't push it, your collective subconscious will push it.
  • ^^or a ghost that may or may not want something from you
  • I think ouijia boards make good use of the human imagination.
  • All I know is that ouijia boards do well on ebay at halloween time.
  • Ouija is a very interesting topic for social scientists. There is an interesting group mechanic behind it, so long as you take for granted that humans move the piece.

Everyone sits just touching the piece, at first. Nothing happens. Nobody is fighting against or for motion. But that underlying social pressure builds. As moments pass, with nothing happening, and everyone focused on that tiny little piece of plastic.

Everyone's rational side knows there's no such thing as the paranormal, but still, you're all sitting there touching the piece, waiting. Still nothing happens.

Why isn't it moving? Why hasn't someone else moved it? Just tried a little? Did it shake a bit? Was that intentional? So many people are touching it, someone just twitched, that's all.

There it happened again. It twitched again. You can't tell who is moving it though, it's so light and glides so easily...they wouldn't know if it's you. It'd be fun, wouldn't it? Maybe just one letter...
  • They work, don't kid yourself on that.
  • my mom has one of the first ones, and its her in room in a closet becuase it scares the living hell out of me, its just creepy, especally since it was like the first one ever made.
  • Oh btw, In my opinion they are bogus, subliminal thoughts ect ect. You cant contact something that doesn't exist on the same plain of existence as you. (At least not with a board.)
  • They are a total joke and waste of time. They don't hold any power or anything weird. I mean for gods sake they are made by Milton Bradley!

  • I was going to say the same thing...I cant imagine a board game made by Milton Bradley would possess any kind of spiritual power. However, I have an uncle who swears up and down that he broke one in half and threw it out, woke up the next day with it sitting on his night stand in one piece...could very well be BS though.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and bet it is crap... Like the others said, this is game by MB. Try taking your freaking fingers off of it and see if the dang thing moves. Seriously... I can't believe so many people fall in to the trap lol...

On a side note, the first time I saw one was in Amityville Horror 3D (I think it was called something like that...)
  • I believe that you can gain the edge in Hungry, Hungry Hippos by snorting like a hippopotamus while you smack the lever. It really works! If you don't think it works, it's just because you don't really believe.

Of course they are.....they were a toy then and they are a toy now.  Come on people, it is a piece of plastic!

  • I read somewhere they were originally made in the 1920's after WW1, so widows could communicate with their husbands / soldiers that died during the war.

I think even if they didn't work the idea of Oujia Boards is creepy enough.
