I've noticed you like to talk a lot in here; mostly about what you consider wee gold nugget factoids (such a fact master! Oh yeeeaaaah!). I've also noticed that the majority of your conversations are... how shall we say... one-sided. Are you one of those people who think that your advanced years have somehow bestowed you with some wealth of knowledge? Do you think that you're the Dungeon Master from the old D&D cartoon in super special secret disguise!? Well, here's a rude awakening: you're on a Nintendo website, Cap'n Popular; your supposed insight of all things video games are relevant in these kind of sites, and these sites alone. You spout this stuff to the man or woman on the street and they'll laugh your *** back indoors - where you undoubtedly spend 90% (heh!) of your time.

I bite, so don't pick fights.

Okay I am officially done responding to these Yahoos...

  • I just saw that too LOL

I wonder if it occurred to him that you know all these factoids because you've been following the project for so long.

I'm buying one and I can't wait for it to come out.

The Nintendo Life article clued me in to this little miracle. I was actually at PRGE and only gave this a passing glance, assuming it was simply using software emulation like so many of the other clone consoles.

I had been seriously considering a Hi-def NES mod recently and this article found me at precisely the right time. An affordle price of entry, top shelf hardware emulation with all new parts, a sleek design, and enough video options to be tailored for personal taste?

    I'm in!

My big question: is this thread the best way to be notified when the AVS goes up on RetroUSB? Is there a way to formally log intent to purchase (I know that pre-orders have been banned on here)? Seems like bunnyboy is producing a lot of units, but I just don't want to miss the boat.Very excited about this thing!
  • I'm pretty sure Bunnyboy will make an announcement on NA. Maybe here, maybe its own thread.

RetroUSB is also on Facebook. I would imagine you could get clued in there as well.

No method of preorder has been announced yet. I suspect Bunnyboy wants the units stateside or at least on their way before that happens.

This thread or the forum in general, Bunnyboy will surely let NA know first when they're ready for purchase.
  • Yep just stay tuned here. Buns has said there will be a ton the first shipment. It's possible to miss the boat, but I'm guessing you'll have a couple days.

Yeah a lot of guys on the NLife article thought so too. I even changed my avatar and username on NLife to "Hamster_Overlord" just to appease those silly trolls!

But the AVS really is actually replicating the hardware itself, not merely emulating it on an ARM or some other platform. It's the only "all new parts" clone console that doesn't rely on crappy NOACs or crappier emulation. The others recycle original parts and cost 2-3x as much!

I would just stay subbed to this thread. Also I recommend checking out the RetroUSB stock updates thread and sub that if you haven't already. I'm sure there will be a front page spread on NA when the RetroUSB AVS drops, especially with the scoreboard.

I kinda wish Brian had added an ethernet port on it so we could plug directly into the internet to submit our scores. But that would have increased cost, LOL! Then I wouldn't need have my PC or laptop powered on every time I want to game. Sometimes high scores just happen when you're not even trying!

Either way, expect a casual longplay of Super Mario Brothers and a few others. I typically get around 800-900k when I play the whole game start to finish (all 32 levels). Just did a playthrough today. Man that game never gets old...

My first thought exactly. Any color would do really. Even hot pink, shit brown, or tranlucent piss yellow. But why bog standard gray?

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. Xmas 2011 did, but requires a four score modified with extra hardware. I'm guessing the AVS's built in four score mode comes with the required "modifications" out of the box, handled by the FPGA of course.

Yes, I realize all that.   Would like an answer from either an owner of one or a dev instead of a speculator, or else I could have just answered myself.

There might be, but I doubt many people will want all the games.  LLE might include a clear version of one of the games tho there isn't one that is far better than the others.  That could be how I get rid of the printed stuff for a game that won't sell 250 like Power Coloring

Part of that is the article not making the clear distinction what it is.  That second paragraph makes it sound like it is emulation.  At least it shows what features I need to heavily emphasize.  It was also funny seeing a comment by retroUSB, I guess the support guy was working today!

Haven't priced the carts yet.  They will likely be all CIB so it will be the in the same range as current boxed games.

Nope, the first printing will be all gray carts to keep consistent.  After that they will lose the launch series banner and go to a different color.

So awesome! All my favorite Xmas carts reissued with new and more levels. I just can't decide which ones to buy, if not all of them...

So I guess now that the launch titles are revealed, a "built in" game for AVS (boots with no cart inserted) is no longer on the table? Or will you just surprise us all with something awesome built in?

Excellent! Now all we need is a converter to convert the super common 9-pin Atari paddles to NES Vaus protocol (since Vaus controllers aren't exactly easy to come by - I only own one Vaus). Two sets of dirt cheap Atari paddles would cover all four players.

  • A cut down Quadralords fits, but I am going to use that FPGA space for some future thing I haven't thought of yet. Or maybe just a bug fix that I missed  It is also a small UI problem if a cart is just inserted wrong so it doesn't load, but the built in game launches instead.
  • BunnyBoy, I was curious if the Power Coloring game works with an SNES mouse. It seems like it would be a nice fit. I have a set of homemade patched Retrobit extension cords that let me use SNES controllers on NES and visa versa. The INL Action 53 Vol. 2 contains several homebrew which support the mouse when using an SNES/NES patch cable.

I'm excited about playing these revised titles, on top of getting the console.

Will they all be available after the launch series in translucent shells? If so I'll wait since your colored carts are my favs. I don't want to be kicking myself though by waiting and then only some of them get a second print.

You know, these are the "black box" set for the AVS. The gray editions will probably be worth more someday, given the length of time they are available and how many are produced. I too am a bit bummed about the lack of colored shells, but they really drive home the retro styling. If the price is right, I may get them all!

Oh, I'm sure you're right on that. I just don't care about future values though since I will never sell them.

I just think the translucent shells are badass looking and for me, are part of Retrozone's charm. On top of the build quality, of course.

Indeed. Sometimes I will downgrade my LE or discontinued items for an RE if they fetch high enough prices on the secondhand market. For instance, I sold my RetroUSB green Mr Gimmick for $250 and immediately placed an order for a $52 INL repro with the synth chip for expansion sound. For a collector, it would be a downgrade, but to me as a gamer, it was an upgrade. The rest of the money went towards new homebrews. I got a butt load of Atari and NES 'brews off that sale. Ditto for Beat 'em. I sold my LE #7 for $175 and got a RetroUSB RE with Vaus upport.

In the same way, I see better value in the blue NWC repros as opposed to owning the original. Why? Simple. Nobody "plays" a $10,000 game! Well some might but I sure as hell wouldn't even if I had that kind of dough to spend on a cart. Just don't expect me to give up any of my 8-bit Xmas carts just because the odd years got reissued as AVS launch series titles. 2011 going forward, I now have a complete 8-bit Xmas set.
  • I'm generally like that when it comes to collecting things too. I do it for my own satisfaction and enjoyment, not as an investment.
  • One more quick question: If we have a Retrovision (in the unlikely event you start making them again) can Gameboy games be used with scoreboard?
  • Subscribed to this and the RetroUSB stock thread. Between NA and Twitter, I should be set. Can't wait for launch day!

Same here. My little man is 2.5 and he already tries to play SMB with me. This would be something fun for him to play.

come on now, it's much more than a "clone" system...even if you're refering to it as a potential "ultimate clone"
  • It feels more like it'll be a re-release or remake, rather than a simple clone. Nearly anything else that's called a clone seems to have issues with one thing or another at best, and at worst be downright awful.

Overall, it's a fairly favorable write-up, although the term clone is thrown around frequently, and used prominently in the title.

It does point out that the AVS is aimed to right the wrongs of the clone consoles that came before it.

I think the biggest issue is the stigma that is carried with the term "clone console" and the connotations that now come with it. The more articles that drive home what the AVS does differently, the better.

EDIT: I'm glad they're at least classing this thing with the NT, and not the Retron, etc.
