I just checked and ABBA resets your score to nothing. A contest would be no problem.
Well, if it happens, I will surely take part on it. That would probably be the yearly contest participation, unless Legend of Kage shows up on the game list.
If it does, I would have no other option but take part on it as well.
Q*Bert is coming up. That's supposed to be one of the hardest NES games. You might want a piece of that action.
I'm actually really good at Q-Bert although I'm not sure I will play.

Q*Bert for the Atari 2600 was a childhood favorite, but I never played the NES version.

Oh, man, same here. When I was in elementary school a friend of mine BSed me into thinking that Ugg would show up at Level 11 or something like that. I eventually reached that level, but no Ugg, and when I called him on it he just shrugged.

I wasn't as disappointed as I was with Pac-Man,but still disappointed.
Thanks everyone for the kind words! I'll keep plugging away and hopefully I'll have some progress to share in the next few weeks!
Q*Bert was mentioned before ... that's just one of a handful of games that I know are going to take a lot of time and practice to figure out how to clear. I probably won't make it to that one for quite some time!

Was playing Ikari last night....it can get tedious. I was dozing off. Of course,it was also 11:30 at night and I had a tough bench press work out earlier that afternoon on top of working 8-4.
I definitely recommend you play Haunted Castle at some point Arn! Tough game with some flaws, but there's just something about it (other than it's horribly disguised Castlevania arcade game) that keeps me coming back.

It's funny you mention that because I played late last night and I was getting really drowsy until I got to the part I've been struggling to pass consistenly. Then I perked up pretty good!
I've never played Haunted Castle nor knew much about it until today, but it looks like something fun to try!
It can take a bit to get it right, but I suggest you to use the ABBA on those areas so you can get used to the enemy pattern on them till it becomes muscle memory to deal with them.
I am rooting for you. You will see the ending of this awful port of a fun game!
So I played this several hours last night using the ABBA code. (I'll probably try again later Arnpoly's way.) I could write a lengthy review on this, but it's his thread and I don't want to thread jack.
I will say this though... I don't think I've played a game that disadvantages you more than what this one does. It's a perpetual FU to the player.
I wonder if it would be easier to grab a machine gun and some grenades and assault a real country. Shirtless, of course.
Probably. In my opinion, this game is harder than Battletoads and Ghosts N Goblins. I think why it's not really mentioned in the same breath as those two is because Ikari Warriors sucks and they don't and if a game really sucks, you aren't going to play it long enough to find out how difficult it really is.
I've never played Haunted Castle nor knew much about it until today, but it looks like something fun to try!
You poor soul. Haven't you experienced enough difficulty with Ikari Warriors? Haunted Castle is another very unforgiving game. Cool to play through to see how a Castlevania arcade game was implemented though ...

By all means, let's discuss the game! It's much better to suffer through it with someone else.
This does disadvantage you in a big way. Losing powerups when you die is a run killer in most cases. The tanks are super great and they are what make the game at least slightly beatable, but then you can run out of fuel and missiles and that's just as bad. Not to mention you are forced to ditch them when crossing water. The water parts are the hardest thing in the game so far particularly if you don't know what's coming.

Yes ... yes I have. But I enjoy a hard game from time to time.
Figuring where the heart drops are in the stage are pretty much mandatory here. With it, the next time you die you will keep all your power ups when you respawn. But then you will need to find another one to save your butt the next time you bite it.
This game is really, really difficult. And the lethargic pace Ralf & Clark have here is daunting.
My only issue is why spend so much time trying to beat such an awful, miserable game when you could invest a similar amount of time into an awesome game that is hard for the right reasons? Is it just the "bragging rights"?

Yes?
My goal is to beat as many NES games and I can and do it from a randomized list. Ikari Warriors is just what happened to come up, and I would be doing it eventually anyway. The bragging rights is kind of a side effect of that.

You are so disadvantaged in every way and the few times you can even the playfield a bit,the game is setup to take it away as soon as it can. There is even a place (I'm sure there's more) where if you die the game respawns you in an area that traps you. And if you get killed you respawn there again so it's hit the reset button. Yay! I will say on a positive note that the lady in a bikini flailing her arms and legs that you can pick up for points (Athena I'm guessing) made me laugh. Ikari Sexual Warriors!
That is Athena, yes. Which is weird and funny because from all I remember, Athena was released by SNK a few months after Ikari Warriors, but both games suffered a Micronics port to the NES.
And I am not ashamed to say I enjoy both thoroughly.
As for why trying to no death Ikari Warriors. Well, as bad as this port is, I do love this game and I try to perform at least half decent on games I love.

I love the arcade versions of Athena and Ikari Warriors. That's honestly why I like both of the nes games, even though they are terrible ports. I also absolutely love the box art for each.

Oh, likewise.
For Ikari and Athena, I prefer the arcade version as well. For another Micronics game, Ghosts 'n Goblins, I prefer the NES version, even though it is a terrible buggy mess.

I've been playing the arcade version of Athena and man I forgot how unforgiving this game is. I can't even make it out of the first level. I can get to that tree boss but he doesn't seem to die. I've been using bow and arrows on him, blasting him in the face but it seems useless. I guess I need to try a close range attack, but his attacks are damn near one hit kills.
So far I haven't found any of the hearts or Athena. I guess that means either they are random drops or in specific locations that I'm skipping when I play, or possibly that I haven't gotten far enough to find them yet. I have run into a couple other rare powerups though. I don't need to know where they are though! I'll keep playing it blind.

Okay,I've started playing this as well as Haunted Castle on MAME,another difficult game. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.
Nah, you're just a man of fine taste, clearly.
