I have run into a couple other rare powerups though. I don't need to know where they are though! I'll keep playing it blind.

Most you have to uncover by shooting that area. That's how I did it. The only thing I looked up was (being vague as to not give it away) something in level 3.

  • Despite the awkward controls and high difficulty i really like this game a lot. The way you have to struggle to survive while manevouring (or however the fuck it's spelled) over different types of terrain and facing new threats, the feeling of working your way across that sea in level 1 and entering the helicopter just to feel invincible for a short moment before you carefully make sure to run out of fuel in a safe pocket and get the fuck out of dodge before it explodes... it's so beautiful. The music is fucking excellent.

If you look at it objectively and dissect specific points it's obviously a broken game but that's missing the point. The games funfactor lies in it's sense of adventure and challenge and when those criteria are met it doesn't really matter how it was done.

How many video games have you actually played?

Thing is if you are playing this legit the stress of the game outweighs everything else. I would imagine this game would have seemed somewhat decent when it first came out but beyond that, I'm not really sure.

I don't know what you mean by "stress" really. It's hard for sure but you're not under constant pressure to make swift decisions like say in Ssuper Smash TV on the hsrdest difficulty.

I think it's more the idea that you have one hit deaths, NO checkpoints and NO continues (other than the ABBA code, which is frowned upon to beat it "legit"), mated with the sluggish controls, and then combined with the ungodly length of the levels for an NES game, especially an early one.

If you get killed early on, no big deal, just start again, but if you get killed five seconds from the level end and that's your last guy, well, you scream, yell, throw a controller, kick a puppy, that sort of thing. Maybe you're not making swift on the fly decisions that can be adrenaline fueled, but you're more under a constant "gotta get past this guy. Gotta get past this other guy. Shit, a tank! Gotta go around. Damn, they're shooting, gotta go this way." Kind of stressful.

Contrast it with Super Smash TV or really most others that are much shorter games and losing deep in the game isn't as big of a deal, because you haven't worked as hard as you would with Ikari Warriors.

I guess the best way to compare it is that SSTV is spikes of "Oh, shit! Oh, shit! Oh, shit!" whereas Ikari Warriors is a monotone "shitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshit" type of deal.

  • The controls are too damn sluggish for me to give this game a serious shot anymore.

  • Progress report Arnpoly? I will probably play this shortly and see what I can do....then either use the code out of frustration or go play the superior arcade version....or play Athena or Haunted Castle. Haha.

It's been very slow going.  My daughter has decided that she's not ready to sleep until around 11pm so that has deeply cut into my game playing time.  I am still learning how to consistently beat the first level.  I can reach the second to last water section in Stage 1 without dying just about every time and I'm slowly starting to get the hang of that part now.  I think I've made it to Level 2 four or five times but haven't made any significant progress there.

Haha, it just goes to show someone will make a game out of just about anything!

You playing along is keeping me moving forward too, so I appreciate it.  Just don't stick with it for my sake!

  • I will join the fray tomorrow.

I need to clean off the dust and see how far I am still able to go without dying.

    Whoa, happy early birthday!

While I'm sure there are better ways to spend your birthday than playing Ikari Warriors, who am I to judge?

Well I have to work tomorrow morning, then a birthday lunch. After that I pretty much have nothing on the docket.

  • Consistently making to the end of stage 3 without dying here... but then I always die when I approach the very last screens, that have a lot of enemy spawn.

And until I distil my new batch of rum tomorrow, I am all out of rum to help.

Maybe tomorrow I will stop sucking and make to stage 4 without dying. Then another struggle will begin.
  • As promised, playing this on my birthday...just for you Arn! In the few tries I can get most of the way through stage 1 before game over. Those areas where you have to slog through the water usually do me in,especially if I miss the suicide soldiers lurking underwater. Hate those bastards! So cheap!

This is basically where I'm at too.  By my count there are three mandatory water sections in level 1.  The first one is with the helicopter and the other two are right next to each other at the end of the stage.  I almost always reach the second one now but I usually get killed at least once there, and often I lose the rest of my lives trying to clear the last one even though I know where all the enemy spawns are located.  I had one run over the weekend where I no-deathed level 1, and then I noticed that it's complete crap that you start stage two with no powerups at all.  I've made it to the first "checkpoint" in stage two and that's as far as I've made it so far.

I just want to say that I look forward to getting as far in this game as you can on just one life!

It took me almost 8 months to get to that point back in 2014, when I decided "heck, I will no death this".

After you learn how to handle the spawn in the water areas and memorize the tricky bits of the stages, it becomes second nature to get far without dying. Now, doing that without dying of boredom is another matter altogether.

In my case, the answer for that was rum.

8 months?  I guess if it takes me that long I won't be surprised.

I have no intention of doing a no-death run though.  I'll be thrilled with the alleged crummy ending!

Should take you far less time to 1cc it.

But expect massive frustration and cursing to happen as you approach the late parts of stage 3 and middle stage 4 and on.

Things can get messy and unfair there.

    Too late!

It might take me longer than it should because I often get time for just one or two attempts a day.

Stages 3 and 4 are some of the worst stage designs I've ever seen.

They can be a bit... trying, yes.

Making even a paragon of virtue, so pure, so chaste, so innocent like me curse like a sailor.

Well geez, you two inspire me so much!    I am still up for the challenge!

  • Areas full of desecending stairs (which you traverse extremely slowly) that lead to small bodies of water are baffling as they are completely unnecessary and don't even fit the stage. It's so bizarre.
  • Hey, if I of all people managed to 1cc this, anyone can.

So yeah, you can do it, weird, patience testing stages 3 and 4 notwithstanding.
