World of Nintendo Cabinet Shelves
Reusing an old thread thread for a new topic.
Anyone have any ideas for making shelves for a World of Nintendo Cabinet? I saw the old posts, but none of those look too sturdy to me. I ordered some 8" pegboard shelf brackets I am going to try. Anyone have any other ideas?

Walmart media towers. Holds NES boxes and SEGA perfect.
I'm not a fan of building huge gaudy custom shelving. But I know of some friends on you tube who can help see video below....

These are actually very nice but they are a little shorter than what most people want. I like that they aren't as deep as most cabinets so DVDs and carts fit nicely in them. the shelves are adjustable so you can make sections for different types of games.

I almost bought some like that but after seeing all my friends bowing shelves I opted for the more vertical media towers.

^ I use the same, except, I buy 2 and build them a bit taller! They're nice since they come out about 5 1/2 inches from the wall where you can actually see your collection (unlike most book shelves which stick out about 2 ft!)
I would use 3 and build it to be 8ft high, but it's a tad too big to fit. Oh well, gives me room for boxes and whatnot:
I guess you could say these were the "alpha" models, we dodn't take them with us when we moved, but we could have; they were sectional and came apart in 3 places. I used 2 $29 bookcases to form one "super" case. I screwed the shelves in from the sies, since you can't see the sides of most of the cases, and it made it MUCH stronger. And I also added 4 corner braces to each one, cause I'm anal about over building.
I had 2 types, the doubles you see here, which are tiered, and the heavy book ones, that held my AD&D manual collection. I have a shit ton of IT tech books, big, heavy hard cover books, but they're mostly paper with cover on the outside. Sure each one is heavy, but you don't get many on a shelf. The D&D manuals however, damn, you have 36" of them on one shelf, they weigh a bit. I used strong-ties screwed into the shelf from the back on the heavy duity shelves:

These are wider than the shelves, to I have the lip stick up over the shelf. Since they come in from the back, you can't see them, they're behind the hardboard backing. But if you slam a book into the back, you get a good, heavy THUNK, makign it seem like it's solid wood.
Because of the way these are screwed in, the shelf can't bow; it's have to bend an inch of steel. So something esle has to give before these will bow. Most likely worse case would be the front ot the shelf breaks off from the back, or it just breaks lose from all screws (They're 3" wood screws), but that would require a shit ton of weight (Or a lot of weight in a bad spot; like trying to climb the middle of a shelf)

Apply an oil based enamel paint, or clear coat over paint of choice. If you don't like that look on the front of the shelves, you can even just do the part the games sit on.
So it has been almost a year since I bought my first house. I had two extra bedrooms and decided to turn one into a game room. I started setting everything up and realized I wanted more rent money instead of a game room. So I moved all my stuff into one of the closets into the master bedroom, which has two closets. I basically wasted my time because I couldn't find a second roommate to rent it out too. After the guy that was renting the one room left, I decided that my girlfriend and I could afford the house without anyone. I have decided to continue my dream gameroom and fix up the other room to rent again (I want to pay the double the monthly payment) and my girlfriend is wanting her closet back and is tired of sharing with me. So here I am fixing up my new game room. So far I have removed the wire shelves in the closet, painted, and installed a ceiling fan. Next on the list is new carpet, because the previous owners had a very disgusting dog. The minute the carpet is installed I am starting to build my own custom shelving (if these shelves catch on, I may sell them) for the room. The only problem I have is painting the shelves. I have painted furniture and walls hundreds of times in the past. The only thing I am concerned about is the paint being "sticky" after it dries or it leaving marks on the games themselves...has anyone painted shelves on here before and if you have what kind of paint did you use?
Do an interior latex and throw a clear water poly on top, that's probably what I would do. It would also make it easy to dust. I'd go with a matte/satin finish for the poly and a flat for the paint to keep it from being too reflective.
Also, might I recommend laminate-hardwood over carpet?

And believe me, I REALLY wanted hardwood, but we are getting the carpet and padding for free (just have to pay for installation) from my family. My parents bought a house and the extra bedrooms had brand new carpet installed two weeks before the house was sold, so they ripped it up and gave it to me, so to save money I'll just deal with it for now.
I consider a backing of 1x4 to be adequate to stiffen it up enough but to be safe I would include center support since 8" is rather deep for a bookshelf.
19mm shelves is the smallest you want to go which is 3/4" thick, once you span more than 810mm (32" you need to add additional support).

Yeah, I gotta figure out how I'm going to get my design to work with support columns in the middle of the shelf.
Also the shelves will technically be 6 1/2-7 inches deep, not 8. 8 is including the backing which will be supported.
edit: you need open shelves at the back? You could also drop the 1x4 and just use masonite on the whole back, and staple through.

Ahh, I see. Well carpet it is then! Haha.
-Stain the wood, apply a clear.
-No paint, no stain, just clear.
-Chalk-paint, then clear.
In any case, I'd go with a water based clear because it's not going to yellow the shelving. In general, the shinier the clear the easier it will be to clean, but the more reflective it will be.
Too bad I need to spend another 300 to finish off all the cases we need. We have a lot of books. I do have a tiny (1/8ths inch deflection) on the shelf with all the AD&D manuals, but look at all the weight on that shelf. Also, I can fix that with one strong-tight strap for $1.25. And they are all screwed into the wall, so they won't budge.
So what did you decide?
I haven't yet. Still going over pros and cons. Also looking at different price points. But it doesn't matter until the flooring is done.
Hope you didn't pay for that carpet ^
I just hope it matches the drapes!

I was gonna say it looks better when swept, then I saw the pic.
It looks better when it's been swept & with a better picture taken apparently. But no, that's the carpet that came with the house. That's some of the GOOD carpet that came with the house. We don't talk about the bad carpet.

I don't have carpet, I have hard wood.
