Collectors: Wii Virtual Console vs CIB NES games.

This has been bothering me for some time. Since all the NES games (except the ones exclusive from Japan) on the VC are only $5 which is far cheaper than most those games go CIB or loose even, did you ever think of selling say your CIB Lolo 2 for 25$ and then just buying the Lolo 2 on the VC, saving it to an SD card and keeping it forever?

also a question to those who have purchased NES game on the VC (I do not own 1) does it come with one of those manuals when you download it that tells you the controls and what not?

Pretty much this has me thinking...maybe I should sell all my CIB NES games that are on the VC and just buy them on there for the $5 not only would I not be losing the game but I would most likely make a good deal of money, and save money from the games I do not own yet (Castlevania III for example).

Personally I perfer the Wiimote sideways to the NES controller. Its just as good but does not cramp up your hand and feels better. The only thing I don't like it the tiny d-pad.

I understand why some of you hardcore collectors wouldn't want to do this. But I collect only the games I enjoy (try for best 100 per system, im stuck at 150 for the NES right now image) so im not sure if this would be all that bad?

EDIT: 1 last question. Anybody know around how many VC games a SD card would hold (NES wise)

Comments

  • i know that pretty much all of the nes games will fit on a one gig stick

but thats roms not sure how it works on the wii

and Super mario 3 is the only game my girlfriend has for the wii and its

a great game for a couple to have

but i always like to get to the last world in like 10 mins then just beat the game
  • lol yeah my record to beat the game is around 13 and a half minutes my brother can do it in 12.
  • For a little more help here are the games I have that are also on the VC.

    Kirby's Adventure

    Adventure Island

    Ninja Gaiden II

    Castlevania II

    Adventures of Lolo

    Castlevania

    Super Mario Bros. 3

    TMNT

    Ghosts 'n Goblins

    Bubble Bobble

    Blades of Steel

    Kid Icarus

    Ice Climber

    Legend of Zelda

    Ice Hockey

    Zelda II

    Metroid

    Adventures of Lolo 2

    River City Ransom

    Double Dragon

    Super Mario Bros. 2

    Mega Man 2

    Mega Man 3

    Star Tropics II

    Gradius

    Life Force

    Ninja Gaiden

    Super C

And then these are the games on the virtual console that I have on my list of games to get CIB for the NES, but I do not have yet.

    Castlevania III

    Sky Kid

    Ninja Gaiden III

    Zanac

    Balloon Fight

    Mega Man

So anyway I figure if I sold all the games that I do have that are on the VC im looking at, the very least $160. So lets say worse come to worse I get $160 for everything.

To buy all these games on the VC would be... $170?!? I was shocked but yeah thats what it comes to.

Then I would obviously have to buy an SD card a 2.0GB is 14.99 at gamestop. So were looking at

    $185.00

Then say I didn't want to play my NES games with the Wii sideways or a friend hated the little dpad (one of my friends do) then I would head on over to retrozone and get 2 of there very cheap and kick ass Wii NES RetroPorts for (sale) $16.00.

    thats $217. wooh. so 217 - 160 = +57.

Now if you ask me I still save money because Mega Man CIB is about that price alone. Then im also getting Balloon Fight, Castlevania III (which is about a 10$ cart) and Ninja Gaiden III which I think is the same amount...

hmmm not sure if I want to do it anymore image

  • You can play the roms for free on your pc or emulated on your portable device (PSP, NDS etc) ... the virtual games are just if you want to play one specify game and you have trouble in the "counscientse" part.

anyway - i prefer to play the games on original platform - not emulated in any form.

If you think this is the way games meant to be played - feel free to continue aquaire games in this form is definitly cheaper.

(i saw an article somewere - i don't remember where - in witch they said that a full set on wii should cost like 10 - 20 % of the price for a full set on old NES)
  • My thoughts would be:

    (1) people who collect CIB (rather than loose) care about having the box and manual enough to not collect loose games at all. I don't see how they derive any "collecting" benefit from VC.

    (2) A portion of people who collect loose carts may buy sought-after GOOD games on VC instead, to get to play the game and save money - this portion of people will be reduced by people who just use an emulator or have a PowerPak.
  • Also, if you're only buying NES VC titles (rather than any newer WiiWare stuff), the internal 512MB should be adequate to hold the entire NES library.

The biggest games only have 256KB of information. You can approximately put 2,000 of them on the internal memory.
  • What about the people who collect NES who have no interest in the Wii? I never got a Gamecube until the price dropped to $99 and the system came bundled with Mario Party / 2 controllers, and I won't own a Wii until it is sub $200. Coincidentally I do own Super Mario Galaxy, but I borrowed my gf's aunt's Wii for a couple of weeks to beat it.

I think it might be a big deal for expensive games, like if Little Samson showed up on VC. For normal Marios or Castlevanias I doubt it'll make much of a difference for most people.
  • I don't think it has any relevance. If you are a collector who is really collecting CIB games, then buying them on the VC takes away the whole point of collecting. If you're in it to collect, you probably won't even be doing this since most of the time the joy is in having the actual box, manual, game, etc. (everything complete with it).
  • Id rather have something I can hold in my hand . Unless the cart version is real expensive.
  • I have always been curious as to how well the NES games look on the Wii, is it comparable to say Nestopia with no filters. Also is the complete library of NES game available, I understand the non licensed games probably wont be.
  • They're gradually releasing titles, so it's nowhere close to the complete library right now.
  • I own a Wii and have bought about a dozen VC/WW titles. One of them was an episode of Strong Bad. The game play alright, but I don't enjoy it as much as playing them on their original consoles. I mostly bought those titles (Zelda, Mario, etc.) for the kids so they can leave my other stuff alone!
  • I can see the advantage of space savings and conveniece of everything in one spot. Handy sure. But we're collectors here. I can't imagine turning in all my games for virtual games.. gross. I don't think it would come close to playing the real thing. Part of playing these old games is nostalgia. The wii doesn't have that.
  • if you in it for playing it would make sense to just have them all on the wii

thats a really good point. this is what made me think of it in the first place. My number 1 problem with NES games is that fact that you have to play through them all at once or start all over. Its annoying, I don't have 2-3 hours of free time to run through Adventure Island 2. If I could use save states the chance of me putting in 30 minutes a day would be really high and it would be more fun.

the graphics are also supposed to be a little better like colors are brighter or something. I wish they would do what they did in "sonics genesis collecton" for the 360 they looked really nice.

and I forgot about the power pak im def going to look into that.

    That's exactly it.
If I only wanted all these games to play, I wouldn't have CIB game. I collect them because I want to have everything that came with it originally. A Virtual Console version has nothing.
  • Even if you put the games on an SD card, arent the games locked to your system (dont know this for sure, dont own a wii). What happens if your systems gets damaged beyond repair, or stops working in 15 years from now when no one repairs them anymore. Then youve just lost your entire collection in one shot.
  • I want the physical cartridges that I grew up with. Forget virtual console. image
  • All this virtual console and downloadable games actually pushed me back into collecting. I kept thinking why not just buy the real game? I don't like owning bits and bytes.
  • good point, I also like that comment about having the copy to hold and the fact that if the wii did break and what not, then what would happen... im stickin to cib image
  • Don't forget that the VC versions are just emulations of the NES games, and therefore have a lot of discrepancies to the originals. Nintendo even fixed some bugs and glitches in the VC versions, but I've learned to appreciate all of the many flaws of the NES hardware. Another thing I don't like about the VC is that you can't sell a game later on, unless you sell your Wii.
  • I have a powerpak...so when I dont own the real game, theres stil a big chance I can play it on the real system. It just feels more "fun" to play on a real system. Not to mention homebrew capabilities of the powerpak :-) (pong!!!)
  • Before anyone drops a few hundred bucks on Nintendo endorsed Emus/Roms, please check this link: http://www.mikeandheth.com/games/97-connect-wii-usb-hard-drive.html. While that guide is geared toward allowing you to back-up your disc-based Wii games, it gives detailed instructions on how to get the Wii Homebrew Channel on your system. Once you have the Homebrew channel, you can download NES/SNES/Gen emulators (from Wiibrew.org or the Homebrew Browser) and play the games you rightfully own on the Wii without padding Nintendo's pockets. Nothing against Ninty, I just got fed up after buying SMB3 on NES, SNES (All Stars), GBA, and then again on VC. Rest assured that this is a "soft-mod," meaning you don't have to open up your precious Wii and solder chips on the motherboard or anything (it's also very simple and worth the effort). After hacking my Wii, I finally have a reason to play it again: easy access to my library of retro games and some pretty sweet user-created homebrew games (Portal 2D comes to mind).

Mods: if that link violates NA's linking policy, please remove it; I don't want to cause any problems, I just wanted to make people aware that there are alternatives to paying for games you already on in cart form.
  • The only VC titles I'd buy are ones like Mega Man 9(ones you could never own in any form besides VC.) VC games have a lot of drawbacks(mostly due to not being a real object you can hold), but their biggest drawback is that you cannot sell them off once you are done with them. One day they will be worthless, since when the Wii is old hackers/anyone will be able to add whatever they want to an SD card (or the Wii itself) and force onto it whatever they want.
  • yeah but what if Mega Man 9 never is released in any other way? then wouldn't it become worth money on an SD card? I have no idea just making a comment.. but yeah I only own Mega Man 9, Bubble Bobble Plus and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
