if the post office says NES games aren't media, then you shouldn't send it media mail. Just like you should always drive the speed limit and come to a complete stop at every stop sign. image

    Bingo
  • There have been comments (ngd?) before that media mail is treated worse during transit. The real risk is the buyer being unhappy to pay more to get their package and you getting a negative. That negative may be far more expensive than the shipping diff!
  • There are legal risks as well (you would have to get caught doing it a bunch though) and then the postal inspectors have to step in. Any agency that has guns and come knocking at your door isn't good. People have been arrested and fined heavily in the past for continued infractions (but I am sure that is pretty rare in the scheme of things).

Plus sending media is MUCH more dangerous. Cause Media Mail, Parcel Post, and Library Rate all travels together during transit time. All of those items are usually much much heavier than stuff sent priority. When people send huge boxes of books, and those are dropped into a container they won't hurt other books, but they will crush gaming items.

If this is the case then people should also be upset if people ship parcel post (if you are worried about damage to stuff).  Media Mail and Parcel post are basically the same thing then, with the exception of Media Mail has certain restriction on what can be sent (and is cheaper).  They have the same transit time per USPS.com.  If someone is upset about slow delivery time with MM then they should have the same complaints with PP, right?

The real question is, if NGD found a box of NES carts shipped media mail would he flag it for extra postage???image

  • Well Parcel Post will be somewhat quicker than Media cause the stuff is stored differently at the distribution centers, but when it does hit the road it travels together. Parcel Post and Media are both not good ways to really send anything. It only pays for a one way trip, so if there is a problem on the other end (fwd, no mail box, no such number, unable to fwd, etc) then the sender will have to pay return shipping cost to get the package back. So in other words you are paying the same amount to ship the item twice, making it way more expensive than priority in the event of any sort of problem.

And to answer your question, yes I would flag it for extra postage. I have had at length discussions with several postal big wigs, and my postmaster said no games. So I want to keep my job so I will do as I am told image

  • I always wondered, what happens when you open it? Do you tape it back up so the item arrives safe? I don't do media mail at all unless I am returning some BS that shouldn't have been sent to me in the first place (catalogs, handbooks, etc). I got this book at work this week about OSHA guidelines for my fitness center along with a bill for $228 for it. I didn't ask for that book and return postage was not paid, so I had to fork it out myself. Let that asswad company pay for the postage when it returns if I shipped it wrong.
  • We tape it back up and pack it exactly like it was before it was opened.

  • whats the most random thing you found?
  • We find all kinds of stuff: Computer parts, diapers, sporting goods, framed art, stencils, and the list goes on and on.

NGD I respect that, and you gotta do what your told.Your job isnt worth someone you dont knows video games. But the problem is different post masters are saying different things. And the thing is.. half of them are saying the wrong thing. NES games are computer readable media, and as per USPS rules they are acceptable. Weather they are games, Country music cds, or porno tapes, it doesnt matter, and the post master has no right to single out games. Post masters are supposed to abide by USPS guide lines. And its actually the other way around. The post cant take you to court for fruad, because your not being fruadulant, you are fallowing their rules. You can take the usps to court though, or certain big wigs that are directing these activites. Several charges can be made, mainly loss of business or wrongfull damage to your business. Also fruad for advertising services they dont provide. If that wasnt what the USPS intendid, it would change its rules. The problem is certain posts think they are running their own show, and can make up their own rules to satisfy what they think their customers should be allowed to save money on. Mean while all the good posts inbetween are getting screwed up and having packages sent back and forth, creating extra work for no reason, other then a highly paid post master doesnt know the general rules of operation of his own post. Creating pointless labor only leads to more USPS cutbacks in services and perhaps job loss. Meaning NGD your job will be harder as you do more work, but have less help. I have been thinking for a long time, the post needs to really reformat form the top down, not from the bottum up. The guys at the bottum are doing a great job.

As for me. I havent sent media mail in a long long time, but when I have in the past I have never had any problems. My local offices always accept them, and so have all of my customers local offices. I dont recommend ussing it, just to avoid the fuss. But if you use it. I would put up a fight to make things right,
