These shouldn't exist?

Along the lines of the person who outbid me on the non-hang tab Donkey Kong Jr. non-hang tab box. I know I scanned in my non-hang tab boxes for Gyromite and Donkey Kong for the NA database awhile ago (back in February) but today I got a huge surprise when I got in a second non-hang tab box Gyromite. Still makes me wonder if someone has a 3-screw Gyromite or any of the other unconfirmed ones. Would love to get a non-hang tab Donkey Kong Jr. box so to whoever outbid me on that if you ever get bored of it... or if anyone else has one I would love to buy/trade for it. Also if anyone should really want my extra Gyromite non-hang tab box I would trade/sell it for best offer.

  • Very very interesting.... the hunt for a 3 screw continues.....

  • I could swear up and down I've seen more than one 3-screw Gyromite before...probably at the flea market about 2-3 years ago.

As for the non-hangtab Gyromite box, I might be interested in it...do you have a figure in mind, Erik?
  • No, don't have a figure in mind. Just wiling to take offers on it. I should probably move this to Buy/Sell/Trade if people are interested. Have to get back to work right now but will probably put it up for sale/trade in the other thread when I get home. PM any offers though will take trade of PayPal on it.
  • Non-hangtab Gyromite boxes are rare?  I've had quite a few pass through my hands.

The -CAN version has 3 screw variants confirmed. Nobody's ever confirmed the -USA version. You may have seen -CAN carts.
  • Not saying you are wrong Jared but I've seen these two in 15 years of collecting and I know abunch of the other "big time" collectors here don't have them. Could be a regional thing or something though, who knows? Always fun speculating with NES stuff.
  • hey if i remove 2 screws from a five screw cart would that count image
  • Erik, I'd be interested in it if you want to trade/sell it.
  • How do you tell if it's Canadian? I have a three screw Gyromite cart sitting right here. image
  • Should say USA or CAN on the code sitting at the bottom of the label in small type. image

the easier way is to just look for the dual english and french seals of quality.
  • ^ But you won't find those on the cart - it'll still be all English with the word "CAN" in the bottom right corner of the label if it's a pre-code Canadian cart.

That looks exactly like what I saw at the flea market...except the back label was in better shape. Even the non-security screws are the same.
  • HOLY SHIT! If that is real then you have confirmed it's existance. WOW, I hope that is real.

If you guys need any more photos let me know. Thanks!
  • I call shenannegans. There's no code on the game, by the time 3-screw/rev-a carts were in prod. all black-label releases have printed codes on label diddnt they?
  • I was thinking the same thing Dan. I am curious to see what everyone else has to say about it.

  • I recant my previous calling of shenannigans, I own a 3-scr Baseball with made in japan, no code. Also, Donkey Kong arcade classics series...but Baseball would be the 3-screw Gyromite's closest brother.
  • Until I see more than just 1 of these I am going to be skeptical. I was leary of the 5 screw Star Force until I heard that more than 1 are in collectors hands. I have literaly checked hundreds if not over 1000 Gyromite over the years and not seen a single 3 screw till now. Time will tell though.

I made a pretty convincing fake NWC Gold cart and was completely honest about it. I would not lie about this. It could be a weird fluke, I don't know, that is why I am asking you guys. I know next to nothing about screw variants. I just pulled it out of a stack of games a couple of hours ago when I read the initial post. If there is anything else I can do to prove its authenticity or that it's a bogus fake, please let me know. Let's just hope that it's real (R10 yeah! LOL!) Thanks!
  • Let me see I have over 118 different CIB black box games, let me check my records and see how many 3 screw no codes I have:

    10-Yard Fight 3-Screw No Code

    Baseball 3-Screw No Code

    Excitebike 3-Screw No Code

    Golf 3-Screw No Code

    Hogan's Alley 3-Screw No Code

    Kung Fu 3-Screw No Code

    Pro Wrestling 3-Screw No Code

    Slalom 3-Screw No Code

Super Mario Bros 3-Screw No Code With "TM" after Nintendo Entertainment System

Super Mario Bros 3-Screw No Code With "R" After N.E.S.

Tennis 3-Screw No Code With "R" After N.E.S.

Tennis 3-Screw No Code With NO "R" After N.E.S.

    Volleyball 3-Screw No Code

    Wild Gunman 3-Screw No Code

SO these are definetly out there.

Also the no code 3-screw Gyromite is EXACTLY what it should be as both my non-hang tab boxes are no codes on the inside flaps which matches a no code 3 screw cart. ALL of my other 3 screw No Codes above are in matching non-hang tab no codes inside flap boxes.

I think we have a winner here unless someone could prove that this was made somehow, label stuck on a 3 screw and board switched. Other than that I would say LEGIT here.

    ~E~

**EDIT** DAN are you saying you have a 3-screw no code Donkey Kong (The original black box?). If so that would be the other one I am looking for to fill my non-hang tab Donkey Kong box with no codes on inner flaps. Official list still has that one as unconfirmed as well.
  • Sorry if I came off wrong, I wasn't calling you a fraud, I just thought something was fishy. The label certainly doesn't look like it was fiddled with, but weird things can happen along the way in a cartridge's lifespan, backswapping being just the beginning of it. Your Excitebike is close to my two examples but the back shows the correct Rev-A tag...but neither my Donkey Kong ACS nor my Baseball have that on the back label which still dates them to the exact same time period as your Gyromite...

It should also be noted for "forensic" purposes that all three of our 3-screw no-code carts have different factory embossments on the backlabel... 01 (DK), 19 (Baseball), 08 (your Gyro) and 12 (your Excitebike).
  • Volleyball 3-Screw No Code

Yah I remember this one grr image

Also out of curiosity and for completeness' sake, Erik do you have any 5-screw games with code? I mean, Nintendo black-box ones, not 3rd party of course. For some reason Nintendo felt the need to ask licensed companies to incorporate the codes into the label art earlier than they themselves began to do so. I'd be curious, if you do have some, which factory emboss. they have?
  • So what I am saying is from what I can tell from my extensive Black Box variant hunting is that the non-hang tab no code boxes followed right after the hang-tab boxes on some of the games (who knows maybe all, but I have all of the 14 I listed above). That leads me to believe that since I have the 2 non-hang tab Gyromite no code boxes and the non-hang tab DK box and someone else got that non-hang tab DK JR box that there could and now almost for sure are at least a few of these out there. Who knows, this could have been a first test production run into the non-hang tab boxes or something, but I would contend that at least Gyromite, DK, and DK Jr are all probably out there to be found in 3-screw form. It looks to me like we have confirmation of the first to be found in Gyromite.

**EDIT** To answer your question Dan, no out of 118 different CIB Black Box not one of my 5 screws has code on them. However they should NOT PERIOD. If they did that would blow the theory of the first release of 3 screws being non-hang tab boxes with no codes on carts or boxes, which from my research and collecting I have come to believe that this immediately followed 5 screw hang tab boxes. Now I do believe that these were probably very SHORT LIVED and were all switched to coded 3 screws and coded non-hang tab boxes. This would explain the VERY short and impossible to find DK, DK JR, and Gyromite 3 screws. As by the time they were changing to coded ones no one wanted Gyromite anymore so they stopped making it and DK and DK JR you could get with DK Classics so why make more of the singles anymore? Makes sense in my head.
  • What a great hobby this is! LOL! Thanks for all the info and insight guys! Off to bed...
  • Is there a way, on the PCB, to tell whether a game is USA vs CAN?
  • This is an interesting thread

is it fact or fiction ???...lol
  • Dain, when you sold that lot of like 1400 carts didnt you have like 200 gyromites? I know my local gamestore has about 100 copies of gyromite I will check it out when I go there next week.

    Bryan
  • Yeah, but it was actually a few over 300. Out of all those gyro's, there were I think 11 or so that had converters.
