Why do you have more than one copy of a game in your collection?

I've been watching all the fantastic collections in the Post Your Collection Pics-topic, but I've noticed that a lot of you guys have more than one copy of a game in your collection. I really don't understand why somebody needs like eight copies of Mario Bros or Final Fantasy?

I guess you can use the extra copies for trading, but I am also pretty sure that some collectors don't trade at all. I really don't understand why. So why?

  • variations. it is a disease, just like any other addiction.
  • Variants my friend... please click out of this thread before you are also doomed on a journey that will never be "complete"....

All kidding aside though, this is why a lot of people have "doubles". Sure they appear to be "doubles" to the novice collector, but each game is indeed different. Whether it is something as noticeable as a hangtab or non-hangtab box or a more subtle difference like a seal variant, people here collect it all. I never even thought of counting screws on the back of a NES cart until I arrived here...
  • I don't mind having more than one copy if the game is substantially different. For example, I have licensed Tetris and Tengen Tetris and play them both. There must be another good example but I can't think of one.

Other than that, I used to have Super Mario Bros. from childhood because it was my first cart, even though I had SMB/DH too. Ended up selling it though as redundancies in my collection were just taking up too much space.
  • ^ RBI Baseball, Gauntlet, Pac-Mans, Untouchables, Hollywood Squares... Wally Bear and the No Gang AGCI image
  • Variants are fun! image
  • I have a few dupes that aren't variants. I got most of them hunting for a fami-nes converter. The other doesn't work but I keep it for nostalgia because it came from a rental shop I used all the time as a kid that doesn't exist anymore. At some point I plan on taking most of them down to the new Play 'n Trade in town to help them out with their NES selection, but right now those extra three or four games help pad out how big my collection looks. image

EDIT- Oh yeah, there's also games I originally bought loose that I have also gotten boxed versions for. I've actually got a loose, CIB, and sealed copy of Tecmo Baseball.
  • Variants aside, if you come across a second copy of a bubble bobble 2 at a flea market for $5, you might as well have two copies image
  • I have a USA version of Dragon Warrior with all the maps and crap in it and a -CAN version with just the manual for authenticity purposes.
  • Because of variants, but also with the rare ones I come across.

I have two F2 carts, will soon trade to me a third one a friend has.
  • i have a few... mainly the smb1-3... i have the games i had as a kid (loose), then i have a boxed set that i recently bought.... so for me, all i have is loose, and if it is a game i want boxed, i keep both copies
  • I have extras I have no plans on getting rid of (ie: I have 3 copies of Princess Tomato)...I just enjoy the game and don't have a desire to off a copy.
  • I, too, am a variant collector, and one a bit more nitpicky than most. I collect variants of all sorts, whether they're major variants like artwork differences, or minor variants like seals and screws (or minuscule such as 5-digit codes on box flaps and the inside back covers of manuals). I've 5 or 6 different variants for Bases Loaded (I'm pretty sure it's 6...there's more to them than orange and blue Jaleco logos), for example, and up until recently, I had 4 variants of Gyromite (I might have that other variant again soon...if I can muster the cash for it...darn $250 variants image ).
  • Only 4 Gyromite variants... PFfftt for shame Matt...
  • Eh, the collection has come quite slowly for me lately...I haven't had much money with which to buy, and what I've had, I've been spending on other things (30 GB Zune for $50, 2 Mac laptops for $25, a new phone (that I ever so desperately needed...a shard of glass fell out of my current phone the other day), etc.). Though out of this paycheck I should have several hundred extra to spend, so...I might be a buyer for a bit.
  • Ah, variants explains a lot. Knew about hangtab, big/small box, but screws on the back? You're all a bunch of geeks imageBtw, is it a big difference in price depending on how many screws on the back?

But sometimes image, and by a LOT
  • I have two Gamecube disks for the Gameboy Advance add-on but that's because I have 2 Gamecubes which both have the add-on.

I have the SNES Super Mario World which is also on my Gameboy Advance. I have Sonic the Hedgehog on my Mega Drive II which is also on my phone. I have Mario Bros on my NES which is also on my All Stars cart. And I have Mario Bros 2 on my All Stars Cart which is also on my Gameboy Advance.

It's good to try on different platforms.
  • If a rare game pops up at a decent price I buy it even if I allready have a copy.

It's good to have for trading purposes image
