repro carts

I first started hearing that term when I bought an ntsc 8 bit version of Final Fantasy 3. I was just curious about what exactly that term means. Does it refer to unofficial copies of a game like an ntsc version of a game that was never officially released in the US?

  • they are games that people made. reproductions. for instance, ff3 was never released for the NES. Fans translated the Famicom version and repro makers can burn the ROM onto the cart so that you can play it on a system.
  • Reproduction is the term generally used to describe copies of prototype games(Like your Starfox 2 there)or like Robbie said translations, like the famicom port of FF2. Also could be things like a Stadium events copy.
  • I hope more people could translate Jap RPG games and make them into repros.

Off topic, my next goal in life is to master in Japanese image
  • I gotta get one of those Starfox 2 repros.
  • you and me both. I want that as well as the FF3 repro.

  • You can Get em both on here if you guys want them:

  • Dragon Quest V for $45. I just bought some chrono trigger maps off a guy who auctioned one of these and it went for over $100. People gotta do their research.
  • Go get FF3. One of the best games I've played on the NES.
  • Personally, I prefer the original FF to either of the other Famicom games in the series. FF3 makes some interesting changes to the game, but to me, the game didn't have the same cohesiveness of the original story.

From Widar's avatar...it's pretty obvious he loves FF3 image

I don't know, but for $100 it has to do somthing else. image

I would love to get the FF3, it's just it's $45 and I don't seem to have that for one cart when I am so close to completeing my set. Maybe if someone trades it to me?????image
  • I believe Starfox 2 requires a bunch of rewiring and soldering, hence the high price..

Someone please chime in if I am wrong..
  • Nah, you are correct. That one and Secret of Mana 2. I've debated on collecting SNES games and I would have to pick these 2 up if I started.
  • yep and suface mount chips so steady hand and small soldering iron tip image

pretty good price for the SF2 repro, I could do the same cart only for 95 image gotta love competition

    *edit

    surface mount ships lol

  • The Final Fantasy cart is mine, but the Star Fox one isn't. I don't have a copy or a digital camera, so I used the picture from an ebay auction that I was hoping to bid on but ended up not having enough money. If anyone is interested the auction ends tomorrow and another one ends on Wednesday.
  • Does anyone know where you can get a Stadium Events repro? I could never afford the real deal, but I need to have it in my collection for my sanity.

Who is charging $45 for FF3?

ANY repro maker should be able to sling that one together for the usual $25-$30.

Yes, this is the man to go to for a SF2 repro.  He can also make you a box for your cart image

Seriously though, you would not believe the amount of wires and stuff necessary to create the SF2 repro.  You either want it or you don't, $100 is a very reasonable price for all the work required.

I think coinheaven on this site makes em. Nice work too.

Here you go. They say it takes 2 carts to make.

    http://www.nesreproductions.com/

Charges $37 and a donor cart.

    http://videogamekingdom.net/Reproduction Games/Nes Games Product pages/Final Fantasy III.html

$45 for his Final Fantasy 3

  • Hmm. I'll call bullshit on that one. A more thorough explanation might make more sense, but the "there was never an NES FF3 made, so it takes 2 circuit boards" sounds like a load of crap.

It looks to me like it's just a recognized in-demand item and they're pricing accordingly.
  • ^ agreed. I would pay $30 shipped for one. Not $45, because it's "in-demand".
  • Seems pretty legit to me, but to each his own. I bought my FF2, FF3 and Mother from gamereproductions and he did a great job on all of them.
  • It certainly doesn't take 2 games, and is a normal amount of work if you have the right donor. Getting that donor is the trickier part. FF3j needs CHR RAM and WRAM, which no USA games have. To change a CHR ROM game to CHR RAM needs the write signal which is missing from most boards. Best option is what nesreproductions.com says, find a SMB2 with all the pins. The other option is to add that pad to the board by cutting a small trench and putting copper in it.
  • I don't disagree that the game may require a semi-exotic donor, but necrosaro's explanation on his site is total bullshit.

If people willingly pay an extra $15 to get it, that's their business.

I just don't like false explanations regarding the pricing.
  • Now I might consider getting the Final Fantasy VII Japanese NES hack with English subs for $45 if they can put it on a cart.

Couldn't you make this game cheap if you got all the parts off of RetroUSB and do it yourself? That way you don't have to get one of the hard to find SMB 2 games?
  • The FF7 NES hack is apparently quite huge. You're best bet is just to be content playing that one on an emulator that supports it.
  • So we can't figure out how to Frankenstein this game to a cart?

How cool would it be to have Final Fantasy 1,2,3,7 all on your shelf in cart form?
  • Obviously, it can be, they managed to put the pirate carts together somehow.

But as far as I know, those pirates are classic "glop tops", so it's not like you could just swap chips with the translation.
