SNES Monthly Contest: July - Final Fight & Super Adventure Island (CLOSED)

Going forward the competition will have two games running at a time.  They are separate leaderboards, with their own points awarded.  You can compete in one or the other, or both.

July Game #1: Final Fight

Rules
  • Goal -> High Score
  • Start a new game with the character of your choice
  • Play until you run out of lives on your first credit.
  • You can capture your score upon starting the 2nd credit (your score will end in a 1)
  • I'm unsure at this point if you can see your score after completing the game so take a pic on the final boss as insurance if you can make it that far
  • Indefinite point pressing is prohibited.  If you discover a way to break the scoring please share it here.  This is all for fun
July Game #2: Super Adventure Island

  • Allthough I'm not a big fan of the SNES titles, still great to see another Adventure Island competition.
  • First time doing one of these. When do I have until?

    You have the entire month.

  • Quick question on Final Fight: I have the Super Famicom version (not sure if there are any differences from the US release). Am I okay to play on that version or would you prefer I emulate instead?
  • I'd prefer emulation unless we can prove its the exact same game
  • I used to be able to 1 life Final Fight back in the day, but I'm not sure if there is much scoring to the game other than getting as far as you can. Aren't you required to kill everything to advance? Perhaps the only difference is the item drops, but I'm not sure if those are static or random.

Yeah, I think it's mostly a progression-gauntlet. There are some hidden/elusive loot pick-ups which would impact total score. It's been long enough that I don't recall if there are any "optional" enemies or if take-down method impacts score (i.e. defeating an enemy w/punch vs. w/throw vs. w/knife, etc.). There's also how well you do on the bonus stages.

Yeah it may effectively be a progression contest.  But if there are ways to squeeze out points this would reward you for it

  • Pretty sure some of the item drops/oil drums are random in Final Fight.

Shiet... one death in SAI... doubt I'll get past the first area
  • Was flip-flopping on the SAI tiebreaker, and went with high score. No-one wants to wait at the end of every level for their life to tick down

Keep in mind with 6-10 likely participants it probably won't matter unless two people beat the game.  So my tip is to focus on progression.
  • Super Adventure Island:

    Stage 2-2 - 77500

    Stage 2-2 - 79000

    Final Fight

    342461

  • 336,651 - I've never gotten past Soddom

    1-4

  • 239,321

Not sure how good or bad this score is, but at least my 1st attempt will be the best attempt for a little while.
  • Ah, good old Final Fight. This game frustrates me to no end, but I will definitely give it a shot. I've never played Super Adventure Island and just acquired a copy of it recently, so I'll see how far I can get in that one.

Put me down for some Final Fight. Beat Belger.

One trick I find that works well for him is to try and knock him down near the top of the ring and then stand directly below him near the bottom of the ring. He typically runs a little to the left or right for whatever reason and you should be able to get at him again. Most of the final Fight bosses seem to be programmed to go blow for blow during the fights.

just edit the one post with the new picture and score. It will get confusing later on having a bunch of pictures. Easier to look through. Just make a new post saying updated score when you change the picture. Keeps the thread clean.
  • alex I'm gonna clean up your earlier posts just so its let confusing for me later. Like quest said feel free to re-use the same post or add new ones, but its easier for me if there only one score showing
  • Would emulators be seen as cheating as you could save state before every fight in final fight and therefore with some patience beat the game without dying?
  • Emulators are allowed but save states are not. If you look at the parent thread I have rules covering that that are more-or-less copied directly from the weekly contest.

The concerns you raise are defnitely not new and we are relying on the honor system to a degree here, as this main intent for this thing is for everyone to just have fun collectively playing a game.

Why bother with save states? 9 times out of 10 you can beat the game without using a continue if you use grouping strategies. Just find a way to group all the enemies on screen and you can hit multiple enemies at once. It tricks the AI into making them all move in unison once they stand up.

The trick to Sodom/Katana is to disarm him and use his weapons against him. When he dashes use Jump+Attack to hit him. The hardest boss in the whole game is the twin Andores. They have the smallest stage and it's hard to group them together without one just grabbing you and choking you to death. Belger is simple one you learn his pattern.
  • Super Adventure Island

    1-1

I suck at this game. Can't even get passed the 1st stage. Not even pic worthy. I'll keep trying but pssh...
  • I just tried my first run on Final Fight. Sodom / Katana took 5 of my 6 lives even though I have played the game hundreds of times and know most of the patterns. Only the second boss Capcom? Why do this to us?
  • Updated: 7/6

    Final Fight - 825,811

Sodom/Katana is an a-hole and typically where I lose most of my lives. Even knowing some basic strategies to tackle him (avoid punching and instead approach him from top or bottom for throws), I find avoiding his charge attacks nearly impossible.

A little practice has done well in dealing with Sodom/Katana but he still troubles me with occasional charges that seem impossible to counter/avoid. Still, I find myself losing 1-2 lives on him now as opposed to 3-4, which is a huge boon.
