  • Also, CLASSIC GAMING CONNECTION in Murphysboro, IL is completely gone. I was down in that area a month ago and tried go but the entire place was empty and all that was left was a bunch of liquidation sale signs posted on the windows.  Pretty unfortunate as it was a cool little spot; went there once a few years ago.
  • Just a suggestion - as you cross out stores that have closed, add a "closed as of xxx" date to them... that way a year or so after you can remove them without any confusion... which leads me to my other suggestion - removing stores that are closed. For example, in the Indiana list, McVans closed their Indianapolis store almost a decade ago. There is no reason it should still be on the list.

i think its kinda cool to look back and say... "i remember that store, i used to trade there back-in-the-day!"

ive found many games with old shop stickers on them from various cities in my area...some are still around, but i think its cool to still know about them even long after they have gone.  maybe a seperate list for those that have closed, say after 3yrs.

I would just bump them to the bottom of the lost for that state. Neat idea!

I'm always open to suggestions but anything that's done will be a pretty big undertaking considering the time I have allowed and the tedium required in editing everything using the forum.

That said, with your suggestions, how would that work with franchises that are still in a state but have closed stores within the state?

I keep the closed stores there because often people come here and remember a store they went to in a city years ago and they suggest it but it's been closed.  There's no way for me to remember what has come and gone without leaving them in the thread.

I am not sure which suggestion you are referring to, but I was thinking a bolded Closed at the bottom of the list for that state would be a way of easily separating them. This would separate those that are open and those that are closed. Any additional information such as a closed date could be added in an additional column. It could even been used to show an "opened" and "closed" date for all stores. That would of course be just for our own record keeping should anyone have any information on them. Just a thought.

Microplay! That sure takes me back. I knew of two around here but they both closed down about 14-15 years ago (Douglasville, GA and Peachtree City, GA). There may have been more around but their website acted like they only existed in Canada.

In the '90s I remember renting MDK for PC from the Peachtree City location and to this day it's the only place I've ever seen that rented PC games. I remember that they had an imported Star Fox 64 and Mario Kart 64 with the rare two-tone controller. I bought a Pokemon shirt before anyone knew what Pokemon was. I got my copy of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe there at launch too. I also rented a Japanese GameCube with Luigi's Mansion and Waverace Bluestorm before they were released in the USA.

Very cool place with a very different vibe from GameStop or their predecessors.

No idea, bad business I guess? There used to be a bunch more within driving distance of me. In 2011 there were about 6 within a half hour drive. Then after that they all started closing now there's only one left. in my area.

Wow. Reed Hastings sure isn't having any problems himself. They closed the only Hasting's in my state several years ago... like 2007/2008 or something.

There's not really a ton of money in owning a game store since the average used video games sells for so little. Paying francise royalties and having little control over where you source store fixtures can kill the profitability quick.

  • Well, I always refer to this thread in my travels as I search for more of those little grey beauties and I realized there's nothing for Alaska. Here's what I found upon my research/hunting into The Frontier State:

    Zeroes Trading Alaska

    35322 Kenai spur hwy

    Soldotna Alaska

    Ian's Game Paradise

Northway Mall, 3101 Penland Pkwy, Ste G-04, Anchorage, Alaska

Video Games Alaska (listed as Play n Trade on Yelp)

    601 W 36th Ave, Ste 13

    Anchorage, Alaska

    Video Game Depot

    3205 Spenard Rd

    Anchorage, Alaska

Low down on these stores is as follows:

Zeroes had a limited selection (hey, it's in friggin Kenai where there ain't much of anything so I was happy to find something) but they always sell tackle if you need some bait to go with that copy of Mario 2. Nice guy who works there and picked up some ok commons.

Ian's store is in a small mall with a small selection but the owner is really nice. Unfortunately I didn't get any NES games there as it was bare bones but he did give me a good deal on Super Mario RPG and decent trade in value for NES games I didn't like I picked up at Zeroes.

Video Games Alaska was a great find with sweet titles (Powerblade 2!!) obviously priced competitively as they know what they got. Owner also a nice guy who gladly brought up the demo of the game I was unsure of buying which helped solidify my purchase. Sweet selection of all rarities.

Video Game Depot was by far my favorite store there. INCREDIBLE selection of EVERYTHING, all platforms all over the place all day! They are changing locations soon but definitely hit them up if you're in AK. Some really rare prototypes he has as well. Great family that owns the joint and have been in the business well over 30 years. They do console repairs too and although I didn't get to buy a game, I did purchase an awesome 72 pin connector which they make from the original molds which they found in a warehouse or some shit except they make it out of better materials. Like I said, great stores, great guys, great find!
