PS2 Collecting is Annoying, Difficult, Frustrating, and Awesome

EDIT: Here's a link to the NTSC PS2 Master List I created. I have it at 1792 Standard Releases, but I'm always looking to update it:

Thought I'd make a thread in here since I didn't see one. PS2 collecting is crazy. It reminds me of NES collecting back in the golden days. Tons of games out there. Everywhere. Tons of games. Lots of filler titles. Lots of sleeper titles. Lots of hidden gems. People selling them for crazy cheap. Perfect time to collect. I know there are a few of us out there - just wanted to see who's going for what and where you're at in your quest  .

Personally, I'm going for a full set. I search mostly for original releases, but I've been picking up Greatest Hits, Limited/Collector's Editions, variants, and everything else along the way. It's crazy. There are soooo many games out there.

I passed 1000 games over this last week. I made a huge eBay purchase about a week ago that pushed me into the 4 digits of games. It was a great lot with tons of rares that I was missing. Game number 1000 was:

I went out of town this weekend and hit about 5 game stores. 2 of them were having buy 2 get 1 free deals and there were a lot of great deals to be had. I'm currently sitting at 1056 games and counting (that may sound like a lot, but it puts me at a little over half of the set). Here's a pic of my eBay purchase and weekend haul all together.

I want to put a full collection shot on here, but they are all pretty unorganized at the moment. Anyone else out there collecting PS2?

  • I'm at just under 500 games. I'm having lots of fun with it. Games are dirt cheap and there's tons of the, out there. My latest pickup was Shadow Hearts Covenant a few days ago. I love buying lots on eBay,you can't beat the prices.
  • PS2 is in my top 3 with SNES and PS1.

There are just endless amounts of fun games. Most are still very enjoyable, and if you like RPG's you will be in heaven.

I am at about 120 or so myself, i would say there are about 200-250 i will probably eventually own. But i have most of the heavy hitters, RPG's, and hidden gems out of the way. I am missing all obvious stuff, ratchet, sly, jak, god of war, gta's, etc......

A full set is VERY hard to do, especially since getting a definite number of the complete set is difficult from what i hear.
  • It's stuff like this that makes me wish I played the PS2. I have a few RPGs sitting around for someday, but I just never got into the system. I do miss the thrill of actually finding things out and about, though.
  • PS2 is my favorite system, and I'd also consider it the best system. I've purchased most of the NTSC games I want, which is around 350. If I was into racing games, sports games, and FPS games, I could easily see that number going over 500. It's an awesome library and it has something for everyone.

I tend to start grabbing games for consoles when GameStop is starting to heavily discount them. Most of what I have was purchased between 2008 and 2012.
  • Im sticking with the stuff I played growing up or wish I played growing up. full set would be cool but I aint got room for that shit. Id be happy at ~50 games or less. But there really is something for everybody, I like it for arcade racers (Burnout!) and extreme sports games (Tony Hawk, ATV off road fury, downhill domination etc) and rhythm games (guitar hero, popn music) mostly pick up and play stuff.

also I have a stack of commons ill throw for cheap if anyone is interested
  • I'm around 200. I'm going for a complete set of RPGs and I also pick up every other game I am interested in playing. I don't have the space for the entire library even if I wanted it.
  • Yep, PS2 collecting is what I do when taking breaks from NES and SNES because its so damn cheap. I ain't crazy enough to think about a full set  as I've identified 500-600 titles I could see owning, while I'll actually pursue about 200 titles, many of which are titles I used to have (all mint), and stupidly sold.  I'm already up to 70 titles or so, and I bet I spent less than $200.

For example, I got CIB Contra Shattered Soldier a month ago for $5.  Why is that not a $40 game?  In 5 years it absolutely should be.
  • The PS2 got crazy in it's later years. I remember being able to go into Wal-Mart and buy a 3 pack of games for like $20 or something.

Anyway, lots of good games that are really cheap right now. It's well worth looking into.
  • Definitely a fun system to collect for. It has a library that is as robust as any console, covering every genre well. I pick up games as I find them cheap. I have over 150 currently with a few of the heavy hitters (Example: Rule of Rose). Still have a ton I plan to get at some point.

I don't currently plan on a full set but who knows what may change as I continue grabbing cheap games. Games are so cheap at pawn shops and yard sales including some of the sought after titles.
  • I have a decent PS2 collection and once thought about a full set, then I realized there was no point (not into full set collecting of anything). Since then, I have focused more on games I want to play or gems that I might be interested in.
  • I'm at almost 200 games...I think it's still my largest library of games.

I'd say about...150 of those are from back in the day when they were new...I was a huge fan of the PS2. I kept nearly all my games.

I would never collect a full set of the PS2...there's just way to many games. That being said I do collect console exclusives as well as multiplat popular games. So if it was released on the GC/Xbox as well I'll go for the PS2 version 99.9% of the time unless the other versions have something different about them. It's just my favorite console of that era by far. It also helps my GC/Xbox libraries to just have console exclusive games.
  • I'm on an Xbox kick for many of the same reasons you listed (they're freaking everywhere, cheap as hell, tons of games). Digging through games that cost a couple bucks each gives me the feeling I got when collecting NES. It definitely makes game hunting these days not a bummer anymore. If I had any time to play RPGs I'd be more into PS2, but I can't personally go for a full set I'd die before having time to play 25% of.
  • Wish i could get into PS2 collecting but i have too many fears of scratched discs, disc rot etc, a game may seem fine and play fine all the way until the last cutscene and it starts skipping and dies all because of some micro scratch you didnt notice and you won't know until you play through the game
  • I agree with everythang you said Robbie. Ive been picking up PS2 a lot over the past 2 years. But Im not going for a full set, thats pretty intense, how many games are there, 1500?
  • I'm going for a full set because I enjoy the hunt to get everything. I just picked up a flat tube tv with component I puts. The games look real nice on it. Here's my current set up, I know, I need shelving.

    image
  • That's a really impressive pile of games to acquire with no shelving. Your motivation for storage is at record lows.
  • I'm the opposite. I've downsized my PS2 collection over the years. Currently sitting at 39 games. I personally don't have any interest in full set collecting, but I can't wrap my head around going for a full PS2 set.

I loved the system and played the shit out of it during my teenage years. But oddly, I don't have a ton of nostalgia for it. I like some RPGs, my Silent Hills, Fatal Frames, Castlevania, Gradius, and my husband has a few fighting games. That's about it. We might have a few more, but between remasters on later consoles and PC, it's just kinda pointless.
  • Going for a full set would drive my crazy. I do love the ps2 and like to find the obscure titles and underrated titles since their are so many to choose from. I don't think I will be truly done collecting for the ps2 so it will be a slow journey. I want to get a modded ps2 so I can play some of those PAL games from ps1 and ps2 that never released in America
  • The pawn shop I go to sells Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, Nes, Snes, Sega all for a $1.50 but theirs hardly anything there most of the time now because resellers (How I know they're resellers is because they list things on ebay BEFORE checking out) hit'em up three times a week.

Back in September of last year I got a pretty good stack of games like these:

    Metroid Prime

    Pokemon Colosseum

Custom Robo (Hidden Gem if there ever was one)

    Panzer Dragoon Orta

    Game Boy Player Disc

    FF7

    Zombies Ate My Neighbors

    Street Fighter V. SNK

    SNK V. Street Fighter 2

    Street Fighter Anniversary Collection

Sadly Zombies Ate My Neighbors was given to a "friend" that moved and cut all lines of communication with me, using douche!
  • Awesome system, but I'm definitely not going for a full set. I think I have 140 titles or so, with quite a few still on my list. Would like to pick up the last three .hack games that I need (Rebirth, Reminisce, Redemption) and some other RPGs soon. Some games are actually a bit pricey, but nothing compared to NES/SNES etc.
  • PS2 is one of my biggest collections. Not only because the games are widely available right now, but because there's just so much worth picking up and owning.

It's good to hear (from DefaultGen) that hunting for PS2 games right now is a bit like how hunting NES games used to be. At least now I can try and imagine what it must have been like

    Hey Chris.

Is that Indigo Prophecy I see there on the top of the center stack?

I don't really collect for the PS2, but I have the system to play PS1 games on (along with a select few PS2 games).

Indigo Prophecy is one of my favorite games.

    You play it yet?

  • My favorite games to find at goodwill. Always fun to find some weird quirky game.
  • What an undertaking that set would be! I'm at around 25-30 titles and will likely stay close to there barring any gems that I haven't taken notice of yet for the system

Fun system though, came out my freshmen year of college and I remember all the talk of one of the guys in a different residence hall picked one up on day one and how amazing it looked. I was just happy that they didn't change the controller design

My local Pawn Shop sales Xbox, PS2, and GC games for either $1-$2 (depending on who is working). I've found some great steals like Suikoden V, Def Jam New York, etc... Recently though the selection is down and I suspect someone has finally found my honey hole. Still find some decent deals but the number of titles available has decreased

I guess that's part of the hobby, makes us appreaciate what we find when we find it. I suspect in the next year maybe two it's going to get harder to find PS2 and Xbox titles, Gamecube has already gone the way of the Sega Saturn here.

Found two copies of Fight for NY at my pawn shop but both were jacked up beyond repair.

  • All of my local pawns have long cleaned out their PS2 selections and I see nothing at GoodWill's other than sports game. There are definitely a bunch of titles I'd pick up at $5 or less, but I just don't see them. I did find FireFighter FD 18 at a GW about a month ago but that has been it for me in a long time.
  • I have around 400 and have the majority of the ones I wish to own. However, there are still several I need to grab.
  • My most recent add was ms saga. That game has alluded me for too many years. Bit the bullet and paid 50 on ebay. Love gundam, love rpgs. Win win.

Now you guys got me not wanting to sell my ps2 neon sign i have listed!!!
