Why were they left out?

I think most of us know if you go to Nintendo's official site and download the "master" list of games that it is far from complete. In fact it's missing 96 games as compared to searching the database here for all NTSC, licensed and unlicensed games (if my count is off let me know). I've always been curious why they were left out.

Here are my speculations:
Unlicensed Games (90 of them):
No shocker here. Nintendo obviously wasn't a fan of unlicensed products.

Licensed Tengen Games (Gauntlet, Pac-man, RBI Baseball):
Pretty much the same reason as above. Nintendo and Tengen didn't exactly see eye-to-eye on licensing and as a result they stopped promoting the licensed Tengen products.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out:
Although they re-released Punch-Out w/o Tyson before he went to jail due to his contract being expired and the fact that he was no longer champ, it still stands to reason that with all the bad things that has surrounded him since that they don't want to promote his game any further.

Miracle Piano:
I don't really know. Seems legit enough to be included. Perhaps oversight? Perhaps they just felt it wasn't enough of a game?

Cyberball:
I have no idea what-so-ever. Anyone care to chime in?

Comments

  • I've always wondered about Cyberball.
  • I know a lot of collectors consider Miracle Piano to be more of an accessory than a game (although the hardcore guys will always consider it a game), so maybe Nintendo does as well.
  • I would like to know the Cyberball answer as well.
  • After asking Nintendo, they refused to admit that Tengen was once legit, and still advise against using their [once-licensed] games.

  • Funny related story... I went into GNC today to buy some of the new Lipo-6 Black give it a try cause they mailed me a $5 off thing for it. So I go in and the guy asks me can I help you find anything and before turning around to see him I say "You're all out of Black?"... yep he was African American and gave me a look like WTF?  Little old white lady helped me the rest of the way after he walked away from me.... Good times...
  • I always understood that Tengen originally developed Cyberball for the NES (even though it was eventually released by Jaleco) and that is probably why it was not included as well
  • Aren't there a few other Tengen developed games for the NES though? I am pretty sure Paperboy was made by Tengen for instance.
  • Interesting... yes on Game Gear Paperboy and Marble Madness are Tengen games.
  • It's all a bunch of licensing issues
