Fully modded ready-to-go HDMI NES's were selling for $400.

Hopefully even though Brians site is set up for a much higher volume of traffic, there will be SOOO MUCCHH DEMAND for the AVS we can crash his site too

Good news is if we do, everybody will be able to get one that wants one...if not, he will be HAPPY to order more, cause he will soon be a millionaire!

Word. RetroUSB will crash when his stuff launches. I am also holding out for the AVS. I have a dual display setup, ASUS 1080p monitor sits over the CRT. CRT for the retro consoles, HD for the modern ones.

Moose sex is overrated. Also even RF is not bad if you get a direct connection to the CRT instead of those fugly autoswitches. The most beautiful CRT screen we have is RF only but it's too big to fit in my current game room so I'm waiting untill I get my own place to set it up.

I agree that's insane. Maybe I should have told him to put me down to do installs for others if people are going to charge that...

I agree. Shipping console both ways to a US installer would be cheaper.

  • I've emailed all the USA modders for my top loader and have gotten quotes ranging from 65 to 100 plus return shipping. Waiting on two people to reply to me before I decide who will be best for me to do modding. I haven't gotten any emails about shipping of my kit so I assume I was one of the last orders.
  • Is this different than the old HD nes version/analog nt or just a new supply? I found the old version to be far too bright/saturated compared to RGB into the framemeister. No matter the settings.
  • I wonder if I was the first person to get and install theirs

Million dollar question: Does the RF port still work with the Hidef thingy installed?

It should since I followed the instructions to remove Q1 and bridge it to retain factory video out. Sadly my AC transformer picked a good day for the wires internally at the tip to break so I'm in limbo waiting on parts to fix it LOL

Mine should be here tomorrow, however A/V Famicom took a shit so I too am waiting on additional packages in the mail. Cant. Fucking. Wait.

  • Oh Yeah, Time to get Hyped!

  • That sucks. My AV Famicom is also "Rev H" CPU and PPU. If I had decided to buy the HDMI kit, the AV Famicom would have been my system of choice to install it on since my NES already has the CopyUSB thingy.

Kinda glad I waited for the AVS...
  • Will the AVS play PAL at the correct speed? So that the PAL games that glitch out are finally playable?

I'm glad I waited too (since I'm not gambling with my money with the AVS), but am wondering about the issue described.  Partway through the video (just after the 8 minute mark), Jason says something about how there's a leg missing on at least one of the affected chips, then shortly afterward says that he's fixed it.  If a leg got ripped off, bent at/in the chip in the wrong way, etc., I have to wonder if that might not be the issue that's being seen?  It's great that this heads up is out there, but after the "oops, broken chip" scene in the original video, I think I'd like to see more examples of this failure before delcaring all CPUs/PPUs of a certain revision as incompatible/prone to failure.

    Yes.

You can set it to NTSC or PAL region, provided your display supports 50Hz. My Sanyo LCD TV and ASUS 1080p Monitor can both display 50Hz (the Sanyo however crops the bottom off of NTSC50 analog signal - found that out attempting to run PAL Atari ROMs on it - should be a non issue with 720p50 though).

Your mileage may vary with various HDTV models.

I honestly don't know, but can you really expect them to test hardware with all 8 revisions of CPU/PPU? I'm not sure but I believe the earliest revisions are quite rare and only found in recalled Famicoms. Mine is revision H so I can only assume it is affected. My best guess is he didn't take his time desocketing the CPU, and the pin probably broke off while he was swapping them out. Old chips are quite fragile.

The CPU in my CopyNES had a busted pin from when I desoldered it. I soldered on a scrap component lead to the stub so all was good when I placed it in it's socket.

Also any issues with AVS compatibility can be fixed through firmware updates, something that may or may not work with hardware addons such as the HDMI NES upgrade.

obviously you aren't doing sex with a moose or composite correctly.

Mine is the INL repro with the extra audio chip installed. Made a pretty penny selling the old green RetroUSB repro and for $52 got upgraded sound, plus a bunch of sweet homebrew...

I made my own like that and did the audio mod on my top loader.  But... Id want the real thing because its like my 3rd favorite game on the system.

Huh? Are you saying that there's some problem with Mr. Gimmick NTSC repro on a Hi-Def NES?

Yeah I am confused as well I have the gimmick roms on my everdrive so I can test on my high def nes.  I tested the japan rom and that worked just fine.

  • There's nothing wrong with the Gimmick NTSC repro on the Hi-Def NES. I've been playing Flashback's CIB repro with the extra sound chip for the last 6 months or so and it works flawlessly.

I'm not sure about the specific chip revision problem in question, but the Hi Def firmware is updatable so it shouldn't be too much trouble as long as they're able to figure out what's wrong. Kevin has released two or three updates already. I updated to version 2.25 the other day which I think it's the most recent one.

The stock Everdrive sound is a bit "off" on Sunsoft FME7 and Konami VRC6. One user on Krikzz forums uploaded new mappers for these chips with vastly improved sound. See here for details:

It may not be that simple that a software update can fix it easily. If the bugs are the result of some idiosycracies with exact timings or voltage levels, it may require some hardware revision to the translational logic (ie adjusting component values) to get it working right. With the AVS, there isn't any issues with interfacing new and old components so firmware updating to fix things would be simpler. That said, Kevtris did get the Everdrive fixed through some collaboration between himself and Krikzz, so I definitely think and update may be likely. Just not a guarantee, that's all.
  • Oh Okay I updated my everdrive to those mappers so maybe that is why those games worked fine.

No, im saying I love the game so much that I would want to own a real copy.  But the only reason why I havent is because the PAL Gimmick is a glitchy mess on NTSC systems.  If I can play PAL games without crashing on the AVS... If I get an AVS, id HAVE to buy a Gimmick... and thats no cheap item.  For the time being I just have a repro full sound one I made.

...but is yours a laser marked Rev H? Pretty sure he specified because he tested normal silk screen Rev H before. Yeah, it doesn't make sense that the change was more than cosmetic if they carry the same revision designation, but I've seen stranger.

Then yours should work fine. Laser etched means they didn't use any color and just made markings with a laser. Silk screening is white, just like the silk screened writing on the PCB.
