Anyone collecting original Xbox?

Perhaps if I can find one cheap at a Cash Converters or something, but my dad gives a frustrated sigh while smirking every time I get a new system. I would also love to collect this, and I have tried to get it a few times now, but I think I might complete a few sets first. 3DS is also a great system to collect for right now. I don't really see the prices rising on it for at least another 15 years. Plus, I'm into PS2 right now anyway, and I'm up to 94 different titles.

To pretty much conclude, maybe this year.

I find Halo and Halo 2 all the time for $5 and under. They were the most popular games on the system so they are everywhere and relatively cheap.

It seems Xbox is cheaper than even PS2 right now. Perhaps I really should get one. Any good starter games?

  • We had a garage sale yesterday and I had some games out and one guy freaked when he saw in my garage steel batallion in the box. It wasn't for sale but had no clue there was a demand for it.

There's Otogi 1 & 2, Metal Arms, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Outlaw Volleyball games....

Any specific genre you like? I can probably recommend something.

EDIT: And yes, in general, xBox is cheaper than PS2 or Gamecube. Late-release games are usually most expensive on the xBox though. In addition, it has the best graphical capabilities out of every console in that generation.

I have a Mountain Dew Xbox, but to be honest I never play the thing. Goes back to the whole "if I didn't play it during the lifespan, I'm not that interested in it" thing. Same goes for Genesis and N64. TurboGrafx is about the only exception I've found so far.

I ran into a guy at my work who has a Mt. Dew Xbox, and doesn't even play video games. I tried to get it off of him, but he said it was a gift and refused to sell it, despite never even hooking it up to play. Argh!

I'd love to find a complete Steel Battalion set. Hopefully somebody at CORGS in Columbus this weekend has one.
  • Some of my recent pickups:

    -Panzer Dragoon Orta

    -Xyanide

    -Sega GT 2002 (Stand Alone)

    -Conker's Demo

That's just the better of the finds. I hope to score more today at my "special spot." Orta was near the top of my list, I'm happy to have it off.
  • I've got my eye on the exclusives I don't have. I need the Otagis, Stubbs, and WWE Raw 2. There's too much bulk for me personally at 900 games to bother getting a full set. I just don't have space for 150 sports and poker games. But I'm having a good go at the best-on-Xbox games and exclusives which would put me at maybe half the library. I feel like when the time comes people are going to be more interested in Xbox 360 than anyone will ever be interested in Xbox so stuff should remain cheap, but we'll see.

Phantom Dust is forever my OG Xbox recommendation. It's exclusive and it's awesome.
  • Well threads like these finally convinced me to buy an original Xbox system again. I was an Xbox supporter since day 1, I chose the system over a Gamecube once the Dreamcast stopped getting support (I also bought a PS2 in 2002 for Vice City). However I haven't had an Xbox console since I got my Xbox 360 on launch day in 2005 (can't believe that was nearly 11 years ago, it seems like YESTERDAY strolling into Gamestop in the afternoon after launch night to pick it up. I was literally the only person in the store. I'd preordered the system an entire year prior thanks to the advice of a friend. There were massive 360 shortages at launch but I had no problems getting mine)

I figured the 360 would eventually become fully backwards compatible and that I would never need my old console again, what a mistake! I gave away my console to a friend and sold most of my games to Gamestop to go toward 360 games. The only things I kept were the box to the console, one S-controller, and about a dozen games, some that I haven't been able to play in over a decade now.

I got the console on eBay, working with power and AV cords, 2 3rd party s-controllers (still have my official one anyway) and the DVD remote with receiver for $39 shipped. Not bad!

Over the lifespan of the system I probably owned nearly 50 different games, but these days this is all I have anymore

    Crazy Taxi 3

    Doom 3

    NBA 2K2

    NBA 2K3

    NBA 2K5

    NBA Street Vol 2

    NBA Street Vol 3

    NFL 2K5

    Halo

    Halo 2

    Ninja Gaiden

Outlaw Golf: 9 Holes of X-Mas

    Soul Caliber II

    SSX 3

Time to hunt down a few more of my favorites!

Funny thing, I still have a string of about 8 episodes of South Park on VHS that I recorded on Comedy Central in January/February of 2001. We were watching the tape a few days ago. All of the commercial breaks are intact, in one commercial break there is a Daily Show clip of still black-haired Jon Stewart showing Bill Gates revealing the Xbox and jokes that Microsoft will soon be inserting the console directly into our spinal cord)
  • Is it safe to assume that you can safely stack another console on top of an Xbox? I never needed to do it before, but this time I will need to if possible. I think I am going to put my Xbox One on top of it to save room.
  • Dont really go after them but did pick up a lot of like 320 cib xbox games (330 cib PS2 games games also) a few years ago. After I sold the doubles, it worked out to be $0.35 a game.

Never was really into either system a whole lot but I like having them simply due the era of the games releases. Tells the tale of what was popular during the early 2000's. Moster Garage, OCC, Outlaw Golf. Oh ya

My 2600 is on top of mine, but that's pretty light. It would probably be more of a risk to the console of top of it, because the Xbox is sort of round and the console on top might rock off the edge if you bumped the shelf or whatever.

Thanks for the advice. My entertainment stand is actually an old computer desk awkwardly enough. My consoles (Xbox 360 standing - Xbox One - PS2 standing) are what sit on the bottom part.

I'm thinking I'll just put the Original Xbox in the middle where my Xbox One is, and put my Xbox One on the sliding keyboard tray which has nothing on it.

Not a bad start. SSX 3 is a masterpiece, easily one of the best games of it's genre (does it have a genre? Arcade Snowboarding?)

Anyway, I hope you are able to locate a bunch more that you need.

  • I printed out the list from RF Generation and got to work cataloging everything. I'm not cataloging loose disc, sealed, or demos right now, but I will eventually get everything.

    I think I'm around 200 titles.

This is a really daunting task, but the checklist makes it easy.
  • I've had my Xbox since launch and I have multiples as well at this point. I'm still picking up OG Xbox games, especially when they were Xbox/PS2 versions, since the Xbox version was, usually, always superior. I don't go out of my way to hunt them down, but if I'm at a store and I see a game I need, I snatch it up, right away!

Going for a full set or just the ones you want?

  • I typically only buy games I liked in the past and or intend to play. Thankfully, that means I won't have to collect them all. HA HA!!!

It's a pain in the ass, but I'm going for them all.

Might as well, it's a pretty cheap system to buy for.
  • Bumping this thread. I was getting an itch to play some newer games so I bought a few XBOX 360 games and they didn't really do it for me. I was in my local game store, maybe a month ago, and I ran across Scooby Doo Night of 100 Frights (a game that I bought new for the PS2 back in the day) for the XBOX. I played through in a week and really enjoyed it, though, it kept freezing immediately after the final boss so I could not see the final cut-scene.

I went back to the game store and saw Crimson Skies for $3 and I remembered enjoying it on a XBOX magazine demo disc. I figured $3 was worth a shot and WOW, that was a good game! That sealed it for me. I will be directing my collecting to OG XBOX for a while. The only XBOX games I kept from my teen years were Halo and Halo 2. I am waiting on Stubbs the Zombie, Morrowind GOTY, Battleground II, and Manhunt from EBay. I think will be pulling the trigger on a couple larger lots soon. Looking at what these larger lots are bringing is like the good ol' days of retro collecting. I am looking forward to it...

Crimson Skies is amazing, and so cheap!

Looks like you're off to a great start with that lineup of incoming games. A lot of hardcore XBox collectors still don't have Stubbs.

Right? That's why I started collecting Xbox. I could walk into a game store, Goodwill, flea market, even retail shop and it's just like the days of high supply, cheap games. It's tough to find better quality and quantity for your money (outside Steam sales maybe).
  • I started collecting for the system a few years ago. Games for the system are starting to dry up at my local game stores. Back when I started collecting for the system I found a mint copy of stubbs for $25. I have about 80 games so far. I got my cousin into collecting for the xbox. You should have seen the mountian of games he walked out of the retro store with for $100
  • I went a little crazy at my local GameStop locations back when the original Xbox was being phased out and they had Buy Two Get One Free sales. I ended up buying nearly every non-sports title for the platform, and the games averaged out to like $3 a pop, including the more desirable titles. However, they all took up a massive amount of space, I knew I would never really give each game much time, and I ended up getting rid of most of the titles, just keeping the console exclusives, superior releases, and games I could actually foresee myself diving into the next four years.

I've also seen original Xbox games drying up locally. I still see piles at local flea markets, but it looks like Goodwills and other chain thrift stores have done a good job of identifying and filtering out anything valuable, like Land of the Dead or Phantom Dust. You can still pick up better individual titles on ebay and Amazon, though, if you're patient and are willing to inquire with sellers who are using stock photos but often have pristine copies they didn't bother to advertise well.

This does seem to be prevalent. I only want complete games and ALOT of the desirable games have stock photos and the seller will not say if they have manuals, even, after messaging them. I wish they would just open the case and spend the 4 seconds to disclose 'w/manual'.
  • ^ What he said.

I just bought a decent chunk of XBOX games for $1-2 each. Will post pictures in a day or two.   Getting harder to even find these games anymore.
  • I have won a few lots on EBay over the last week. It's fun starting a new collection. I have been looking for small-medium size lots with at least one rarer title. So far I have been paying $2 or less per title. I'm sure the deals will dry up once I start acquiring duplicates, though, due to multiple Tom Clancy titles and other similar commons being in most lots I have seen.
  • I'm always trying to go for a "backwards compatible to 360" only set, which is quite a feat. haha

    Crimson Skies is amazing,

This is why MS deserves to fail. They had FASA and could have had their own cool 'Uncharted' type series.

I didn't even know FASA had a part in Crimson Skies. Now that I put the pieces together, it makes sense...
