I finally decided to jump on the Everdrive bandwagon :D I got the NES/SNES ones first of course

Well folks after many years of hearing about these Everdrives (the cartridges you can put roms on an SD card and play most any rom for that system known to exist) as well as finding a super secret website that lets me download complete sets of NES/SNES/etc roms in one download (and another place that has homebrews and tech demos), I finally decided now was the right time to get the Everdrives.    See, my wife was really really sick and she let me get the NES and SNES ones for taking such good care of her

Anyway, I watched the reviews of the Everdrives on YouTube and such and Stone Age Gamer seemed highly recommended so I went with them.  NO, I didn't get any of those deluxe editions.  Just the cartridge itself with the basic labels and their 32GB matching label SD card for the SD2SNES Everdrive (no I didn't spring for those blinking light thingies; sorry!) though for the NES N8 Everdrive I had to get a couple of 8GB SD cards from Amazon because the max they had with it was 4GB and believe it or not, it would've been too tight a squeeze for all the roms I had (the complete set downloads include the works...the SNES rom set has 18GB worth).

And I must say these are quite handy tools to have for any retro gamer!  NO, my real cartridges are not going anywhere, I will continue to collect those just as I always have (plus I'll do my first playthroughs of each game on the real cartridge...I can save the repeat goarounds for the Everdrive).  And NO getting the repo carts was not at all a waste.  One I like the feel of having the cartridges and two, the SD2SNES doesn't do FX yet (that includes StarFox 1 and 2) anyway.  Bottom line, the Everdrives are just like the touch screen phone/tablet games...they are additional tools/options.  They will never be complete replacements.

Another thing I like about the NES Everdrive is not just that it can do Game Genie (believe it or not I never owned one) but I can't use a real Game Genie anyway on a top loader (the top loader adapter I bet it about what the Everdrive itself went for and it'd probably make the system way too top heavy besides).  I also like how I can not only do hacks of games but also homebrews (for the NES for example there's a Sudoku game and even the classic Cracker Barrel pegs game among others) and even neat tech demos that can show just what the system can do!

All in all, I'm proud to have the Everdrives in my retro gaming arsenal and not only did Stone Age Gamer do a beautiful job making them but I even got them just two days after placing each order!  I also like how they do a points/ticket system where you get a point for every quarter you spend on the site and each point is good for two cents off your next order (they do add up trust me), similar to how my wife's Schwans orders work

Once I can reasonably afford to do so, I plan to get the Genesis Everdrive next (which can do both Genesis and Master System games BTW) and the Game Boy (Color) one after that.  The Everdrive 64 looks good too...but it has to be able to take a 64GB SD card to hold the complete rom set.  I'm also curious as to how that upcoming GBA Everdrive will be...

  • Why wouldn't you just get reproduction carts?

(Hope you realize this comment was in jest )
  • Because I'm the kind that likes to have the best of both worlds
  • Pegboy must get a percentage for converting people to everdrives.
  • He didn't "convert" me at all, I was thinking of getting them for awhile. It was my own choice, no one else's

haha glad you're diggin em! I gotta grab a couple myself
  • Everdrives are awesome! Got a Famicom N8 and a SD2SNES. Now just need a famicom to NES converter to use the N8 on my Hi Def NES and I'm set
  • The Everdrive 64 and the upcoming Everdrive GBA do take at least 64GB SD cards right?
  • I thought you could stick whatever size you want in there?

    That's what she said

StoneAgeGamer sells upto a 32gb with their N64 Everdrives, so it maybe the highest???
  • I'm curious about the "super secret" site. Were the complete sets zipped or not?
  • Fantastic post and analysis, Estil. I'm thinking of going the everdrive route sooner than later myself. The next big "sell off" for me might be my last cash out for physical carts for quite some time.
  • I've got the n64 ever drive and it's great. I'm in the process of moving but plan on getting one for the gba and snes possibly tg16 aswell

    It's really good

You did catch the part about me saying I will continue to collect the real cartridges just as I always have, that they are only suppliments/additional options, not replacements, right?

Yes, you might want to have the 7-Zip program (not to be confused with 7-Up) handy.  And I have to call it super secret because I'm pretty sure you can't give out rom locations at places like this right?

I too am curious about this! A lot of the roms on mine are buggy or don't work...I know it's just a bad rom because I have replaced a few and they work fine now.

    I did.

I personally plan to stop going for carts after I get an everdrive. Two different paths. Threads like this inspire me to get an everdrive sooner than later, as I don't really go for carts anymore.

  • For your next buying spree Krikzz always has a black Friday sale every year where things are about 20% off.
  • I lurv my Famicom N8, thanks to MrWunderfuls rant about one some time ago.

Also had T-16 and Mega Drive but unfortunately sold them, but I'll replace them one day.

This is a great deal if you're patient enough to wait for it. IIRC I bought 3 out of my 4 Everdrives during his previous Black Friday sales. While it might take slightly longer to ship than Stone Age Gamer, it's nice to know it's coming from the man who actually created the Everdrives.

Glad to hear you made the splurge Estil. Enjoy!

Congrats! Everdrives kick major ass. I've got a couple, and I'm hoping to get one for each of my systems(that can use one). There's a GBA one coming out? I didn't know that. I have an EZ Flash IV for my GBA, but it's really clunky and kind of a pain in the butt to use.

Hit me up too, please? My sets are shoddy and slapped-together. I'm constantly having to add titles, and it's annoying.

    Correct.

I could have sworn this issue has come up in the last year and the actual rule was that you can't directly post ROM files, but links to external sites were "safe" territory.

(or for that matter, offering a specific set of search terms -which could presumably include non-hyperlinked URL- to generate the site/link on Google would absolutely be safe territory)

  • Just go to http://emuparadise.me/ and call it a day. Aside from ROM's, it actually has some useful information and tools, and forums are interesting to read as well.

Warning: The site is severely bombarded with ads and the like. Surf at your own discretion.

I had all the ntsc games before and I think I fit it all on a 32gig with room to spare. I can't check atm because it is packed away in a box somewhere. I'm moving in a week
