More like Meh-tal Storm...

Actually this game is pretty sweet, haha.

Played it for the first time this weekend. The "Gravity Flip" gimmick is pretty cool.

Gameplay is sweet with tight controls and I like the good speed and automatic guns. The graphics are cool and the music is really good.

The graphics are trippy and the variety in levels is neat. The backgrounds seem simplistic at first but are awesome after you start moving.

The second loop thing, though? Dammit.... I don't know if I have it in me to hack through the second loop.

Anyone else give up? Success stories? Pro tips?

  • I think I've only made stage three, playing in emulation.

I think it's awesome, but the Video Game Critic gave it an F, proving he's a pleb casul who can't into harder games.
  • Yeesh... F?

That is the first and last time I ever read one of those reviews. I didn't know such a "critic" existed. The review of Metal Storm is just an angry rant, and doesn't seem to be factual or fit the game.

The puzzle parts of the game are interesting and fun.

As per Metal Storm: The unlimited continues makes it pretty straight forward. Allowing you to just start over and over. When you finally get through a level you realize they're rather short.

It's good because you get to continue at the second part of each level.

Single (double after upgrade) hit kills suck, so that makes it hard.
  • I played through the first loop, but not the second loop. I don't believe there is any new gameplay after the first loop. I got frustrated with some of the puzzles and felt the second loop was a waste of time.
  • Game's pretty neat. I don't know if it's 'more than a hundo' neat, but it's neat. I've only played through 2 stages at a friend's house. Good to know ahead of time about a looming second loop.

Ouch, that things over a c-note now?

    Yeah. Close to $120.

  • Damn. I knew it was a cult game, but ... ouch.
  • I knew this game was pretty well regarded, but a friend and I played through it for the first time a couple of years ago and it quickly became one of my favorite NES games from just that first impression. I've only done the first loop but I will be taking on the second loop someday!
  • One of my favorites on the system, and one of my greatest regrets in selling it a few years ago. I got through the second loop and thought the extra animation at the end was worth it.
  • I like the game, really think the gravity flip made it stand out.

Never beat it, but one day I may sit down and really give it my best shot.
  • The stage 6 boss was designed by a sadist. The floor and ceiling in the room kill you instantly. So where do you stand? On the "boss," which consists of three boxes rotating around the borders of the room. You hop from one to the other and so on while you're firing at them. Yes, you're destroying the platforms that are keeping you alive. While they're moving. And the vulnerable spot on each one isn't always open either so you need to time your shots right. You only have a split second to start moving when you first get dropped in the room too. This late in the game you're probably going to be very low on lives too so it's not like you're going to get much opportunity to practice it.

Seriously this is one of my favorite boss battles ever because it's completely nuts and really keeps you on your toes. A very "are you F***ing kidding me?" experience.

It had been ranked in the top 50 games of all time for any platform by Nintendo Power back in 1997.

One of the few games I know of where the US version came out before the Japan version, unless the internet is wrong about the Japan release date.

This was the hardest boss for me as well. Loved the game from the first time playing it on emulation. Sat down a few months ago and played it all the way through on my cart and then did Bucky. Easily 2 of my most favorite Nes games now. A "F" is just ludicrous.

It's well worth your time. The game's not incredibly long if you just want to go through the first loop. I think it can be beaten in just a few hours playing through it casually. So maybe five hours going through it twice? It's been a while since I've played it to completion. Regardless, if you have a free afternoon and decide to sit down with every intention to beat it, you should be able to go through the first loop with no problems. It's well worth it too.

Anyway, I really enjoy this game. Definitely up there as an 8/10 or so for me. Some levels aren't that fun but still showcase some neat screen-wrapping and gravity ideas. Not to mention the very cool parrallax scrolling. Even the levels that aren't all that fun to play are still a marvel to look at.

The second loop is Expert mode and is one of the most brutally difficult challenges on the NES. Way harder than Battletoads.

Yeah... this boss is awful. What the hell?

The responses to this thread have made me reconsider trying the second loop.

Going to give it a go.
  • The second loop kicked my ass last night.

I barely made it to level 1-2.... Ouch.

I can certainly confirm that the second loop is ridiculously harder.
  • Update. Game kicked my ass and I gave up on the second loop. Will be revisited with a game genie. Fun, though.

The first loop will be a fun playthrough for a random day.
  • The game is fun, but not really one that has a lot of replay value. It really only has what, six stages and each stage is up to five minutes or so if you milk it? I did beat the first loop but never bothered with the second loop. Mega Man did it better in the sense that you could get hit more than once (Metal Storm had one hit kill unless you had the shield item). Mega Man also panned out the screen so you could see what was expected up ahead. A few of the stages were very zoomed in and you had to make a leap of faith to know what to do next and how to advance the stage. While it is fun, I sold mine earlier this year due to lack of replay value.

Yeah, I agree that there's not a ton of replay value. Even still, as NES games go, it's decent playthrough at least.

Not much comparison to Mega Man.... let's not get crazy, haha.

But... I saw a code for invincibilty with Game Genie so one day it might be cool to go through the second loop with that.
