Guacamelee

I didn't see any dedicated threads for this one, and I'm finally getting around to trying it (been in my Steam back catalog for awhile).

This game is really well done.

It takes the exploration, platforming, and power-up style of Metroid and mashes it up with a beat-em-up combat framework that is combo-heavy and creative (a bit like The Bouncer, but actually fun  )

Seems like there are tons of things to do, and lots of hidden chests to find to get 100%.

So anybody else give this one a try?

  • We have Metroidvania games, so what genre blend name would this be?

    Metroidragon?

    River City Metroid?

    Mighty Metroid Fight?

    Streets of Metroid?

    Double Metroid?

"River City Metroid" probably feels more accurate, since that is already a game with exploration and shops for power-ups.

I don't think I've seen a beat-em-up that was so focused on combos, though, other than The Bouncer on PS2.

  • I've heard nothing but great things about it but I've never tried it myself. Despite how well it has been received it just doesn't look like it appeals to me. I don't know, maybe it's the style or look of it. Maybe one day when I have nothing else to play I'll download it.

I was definitely on the fence about it (but it was part of a bundle so only cost me $0.50 or maybe $1)

I'm glad I finally gave it a try, though.

The platforming is a lot more creative than I originally expected, since it starts to work in all sorts of powerups and special moves.

(and things like wall jumping are way easier to execute than in Super Metroid, so the "special platforming" is just more satisfying, overall)

It has some really cool challenge modes, as well, that focus individually on each subgenre of the game (i.e. speed-platforming, puzzle-platforming, combo-heavy combat, etc)

The odd/unique look sort of grows on you, too.

  • I stopped at the X'Tabay boss fight. I'm not sure how far along in the game that is, but I feel like it was pretty well into it. I was playing through it along with my wife, but for some reason we just stopped there and didn't pick it back up.
  • I've enjoyed what I've played. I bought it on my Vita when it came out. Kind of just stopped playing it (I do that a lot) so I'll hopefully get back to it!
  • It was a good one that I'd recommend. I played it and beat it maybe a year or two back, not sure. Don't remember a lot but I remember the game being worth playing and it kept me hooked until the end.
  • I didn't care for the art style but I liked what I played of it. It's a well made game.
  • My buddy and I played thru this last year. Incredible and fun game IMO.

One of my favorite from Indiebox in my small collection. Guacamelee! Definitive Collection.

I'll keep it in mind when I'm looking for a new game of that type. I know it's probably silly but I just don't care for indie games either. I've only tried a couple just straight out did not like most of them (Shovel Knight is the one huge exception). I've heard nothing but praise for Guacamelee though and I trust it is a good game. Good to know the special moves in the game are easy to perform too, since the inane process of wall jumping in Super Metroid is the one thing I genuinely hate about that otherwise perfect game.
  • ^Looks like something I'd really enjoy. If I remember correctly, there's a Mega Man "blue bomber" reference via graffitti or a poster on a wall. I could be thinking of another game though
  • Great game. Switching between the living and dead dementions is a great added component.

Myself and a friend played that smeg to aboot 85% and haven't got around to playing it again, for over a year now.

    Yup, definitely silly.

All of the best games I've played in the last 5 years have been "indie games" of one sort, or another.

Tons of referential humor in the form of posters, billboards, and wall paintings.

They even had a secret room with a coded message written in the language from Fez.

That's pretty cool! I'm definitely going to have to check this out. I had seen a few blurbs about it in the past and I thought the art style and lucha libre outfits were cool, but knew very little of the gameplay. Definitely going to get this on Steam once I redownload the app on my computer. (For some reason it erased it and a few others when I upgraded to Windows 10.)
  • I didn't expect much from this game but it was fantastic. The platforming gets hard at times but when you die you know it was your fault. The fighting is awesome too. The last boss kept me on my couch for an extra half hour until I finished it.

Overall I felt it was on par with Shovel Knight. All around great game in a style I do not see so often.
  • Picked up Guac Super Turbo on sale a while back as a game I've had my eye on for a while. Still haven't played it, although it will work into my queue sometime soon.

Picking it up was a no-brainer for me because I like Metroid, I like beat-'em-ups, I like Lucha Libre and I like the art style. Plus, the reviews were generally positive.

    Looking forward to digging in.

I don't like or give a pass to games by virtue of their designation as "indie"...but I also don't dislike a game simply because it's "indie" either. If a game is good, it's good. If a game sucks, it sucks. Whether it was at the hands of a 100-member design team and $20M or a guy in his basement with $500 and a dream means very little in the big picture to me. The best graphics and physics engines that money can buy won't cover up lazy, buggy, shallow design and even the most pixel-artsy, "look how outside-the-box I am" indie-game concept can't excuse bad design and sloppy game play.
  • Played it and beat it with my son when it launched. A phenomenal game to be sure.
  • I thought the art design was freaking outstanding. For some reason I feel the aesthetic really captured the whole "dusty mexican pueblo" thing really well.

One of the standouts as well was how tight the controls were (I played it with an xbox controller on PC)
  • Great metroidvania with character action game movies (think devil may cry or god of war but 2D)

It is very stylish and while the art is simple, it lends itself to some fantastic animation. Controls are tight and you get some really tricky platforming later in the game once you unlock all the moves. Some of the nods to other games are hilarious. It is out for pretty much every system out there right now, you have no excuse, check it out.
  • This game is great, quite surprised to see some of the lukewarm comments. This game is right up my alley and very very well made. If you're on the fence, get it.
  • The easter eggs in the game were awesome as well.
