8-Eyes, worth a play?
I got into this discovering emulation in college. I had a NES as a kid but didn't have many games, neither did my friends. So I didn't know about a lot of staples. All I was really aware of was Mario, Duck Hunt, Contra. I didn't even know Mega Man was around. Anyway, back to college, I liked to play NES emulator and check out different games. I liked 8-Eyes a lot, read about it being a bad Castlevania clone, then discovered Castlevania and never looked back.
Well, I've mastered the Castlevanias, is 8-Eyes worth going back to? The controls seem cludgey and I can't figure it out, but I haven't given it more than a few minutes. Any fans here? Is there any ultimate reward or is this one a junker?

^^^ Don't use an FAQ. Part of the challenge is beating each level and determining the boss weaknesses.
Don't use a FAQ if it goes against your religion, of course... I generally feel the same way about FAQ usage. The progression is not as obvious as it might be while trying to figure out which robot to kill next in Mega Man, however, for example. There is really no logic to the order... so unless you feel like screwing around for a while trying to figure it out, I would recommend looking it up.
Don't read any more than what order to go in, though! Figure everything else out on your own. It's a great game, and I think it's got an unfair reputation.
It's a great 2-player game for mixed skill levels. The "serious" gamer controls the main character, and the lesser player controls the falcon. It's kind of like playing Mickey Mousecapades in 2-player mode.
Damnit, now I want to play it again too! Oh well... such things happen when hanging around on NA.
I dunno, I've played it quite a few times and got tired of it after about 5 minutes each time.
Yes, that's what happens to me too.
This
game is great as a 2-player game but barely playable as a 1-player
game. With one player there's always just a bit too much, the bird
controls quite poorly, and you end up losing a lot of precision. With
two people you can really focus on what each character does best and
actually do it. I think that's why it gets such a mixed reaction.
That makes sense. Some games are like that. I trust The OSG.
Yes. It is a good game, and is considerably better with a second player controlling the falcon.
Thanks for the advice guys! I'm going to keep it based on the recommendations here. I never knew it was a 2p game, and I'm always looking for more of those. A good buddy of mine just graduated with his masters, so he'll have more free time. I think it's time for some 8-Eyes action!
If nobody knows about the order or dont remember it even when they cleared the game I can give this hint:
When you are in the House of Ruth you got to face all the bosses once more except for the one that guards the last country before house of ruth. When you face the bosses in the house of ruth they appear in the right order as you should beat them in whole game.
I made a gamers guide to the game in which I took pictures of the TV while playing the game. The pictures reveal where the items you got to get in order to finish a country, are hidden. The only countries not covered by the guide are Africa, Germany and the House of Ruth.
If anyone is interested in that guide I might put it up here
quite simply the worst bird game ever made
You must just suck at it

Africa and Germany are the tricky ones as they are made like the mazes in some castles in SMB1 and SMB2. Depending on where and how you enter a room decides where you end up. With the first bowls in Africa you have to descend on the stairs a couple of times and stab in the wall and you will find the first 3 ones when doing so repeatedly. Finding the boss is harder but this guide should get you started. I have not documented Germany but I might do so in future. It is the hardest stage in the game
The scrolls reveals the riddle of the 8 Eyes. They are supposed to be placed in a certain order in the jewelcave in order to finish the game. The game has a second round before you get the real end
And games like 8 Eyes and Castlevania 1, 2 and 3 are optimized for this widescreen format. I newer get that good picture when I play those games on my CRT TV. Some games should be played on a widescreen HD-TV
WERY, it's interesting that you mentioned the optimization of games for widescreen. I've always thought that most games look way better in widescreen as well. I also hear people always saying that CRT's are better for NES games when IMO NES games look best on an LCD or Plasma with the right picture settings. Sure, you can't play zapper games but it's a small price to pay for great pixel definition and color.
Then there are some games that get big edges on about 1 inch on the left side. Double Dragon for an instance. It is playable but if you dont like it you should play on an ordinary 4:3 TV insted of 16:9
