Overpowered attacks that make a game much easier

  • I can only think of RPGs and fighters. Sleep, charm person, stinking cloud, hold person, haste, fireball, lightning bolt, animate dead. I'm a bit old school there though.

Then I think of TGWF from tekken, and wave dashing, something I've not been able to do in 15 years.
  • R.Y.N.O weapons in ratchet and clank games.

    Hadouken and Shoryuken in MMX/X2
  • The uppercut attack in Double Dragon II for Game Boy is pretty lethal. There's seldom much reason to use anything else, and it takes bosses out with no trouble.
  • Sometimes I like the challenge myself to play stage 7 of NGIII without Invincible Fire Wheel.

Have you ever tried to play through the game with just the small sword and no ninpo? It makes an already tough game a lot more difficult. I gave up at the act 3 boss IIRC.

Yep, I tried low%, gave up at 7-3. I can no-death NG1 low% with ease, but the third game really makes you want those power-ups. And II? I'm not even trying that one sword-only. No way.
  • I only managed to do a real sword-only no death NG1 run once, meaning no ninpo as well as no health refills or time freeze. The hard part is maintaining a single health bar all through act 6 with no refills and not being able to time freeze during certain sections. It's still way easier than a pacifist run.

Sword-only NG2 is way beyond my abilities. I even need ninpo to kill the second final boss form because I totally suck at fighting him with the sword.
  • Anybody say the cape in SMW?
  • In Arrow Flash for Genesis, you've got a special attack while in robot form that makes beating bosses ridiculously trivial in an already-easy game.
  • Spread Gun in Contra definitely

    Dang, took my examples

Metal Blade / Megaman 2 - Barely uses any energy and is aim-able

Firebird / Legendary Wings - Crazy strong and you can get hit twice before downgrading

Freeze / Twisted Metal 3 - Gets way too easy to freeze opponent / power shots / refreeze / etc. until they die if you time it right

P Wing / Super Mario 3 - Can basically fly to the end of the any level.

Princess / Super Mario 2 - Can just glide safely nearly everywhere

Blue Shell / Mario Karts - Dumbest attack IMO. Punishes being better than others to try to create more parity within the game

Wolverine / X-Men 2 Clone Wars - He's regenerates health, so you can just wait around until he's healed whenever he takes any damage

False Swipe / Pokemon Gold & Silver - I think that's the name of the attack. Brings the opponent down to 1 HP, making it incredibly easier to catch things

Blue Motorcycle / Road Rash - Crazy fast and super easy to control. If you save up enough $$$ to get it, you're golden

Helicopter / Twisted Metal (PS3) - You're in the sky while everyone else is on the ground... and you get a super powerful weapon

Hm, I don't think either of the time-stop segments (both in 6-3) are too bad if you just haul ass and get through as quick as possible, it's if you let those hopping enemies stay on screen for long that things really get tight. I actually haven't done pacifist yet, though I do plan to.

Form 2 of Jaquio is hard as fuck sword-only in NG2, so no worries there.

  • I remember there being a move that was overpowered in fireblazer, basically use it the whole game.
  • The only power up I specifically avoid using for difficulty purposes is the feather in Super Mario World. There are a bunch of levels you can simply fly over as if the game wasn't easy enough.
  • Great bump. I always hated hadouken spamming.

As for Mega Man 2, the metal blade is my favorite weapon in any game and I don't care if it's cheap! I'm secretly disappointed in all subsequent Mega Man games because no other weapons come close.
