RGB set up help

I was hoping I could as a few RGB console questions of people that have RGB modded consoles and use PVMs.

I have an AV famicom, pc engine, snes, and n64 I would like to RGB mod. I guess for the N64 that will have componant but whatever is better than just AV.

I understand that most people use scart to BNC cabling for these types of set ups. I was wondering if it would be easier to just use BNC to Componant (RCA) jacks on the back of the PVM and use standard componant cables.

I also hope that on my consoles I could use a uniform cable such as din or the nintendo cable so I can just plug in each console as needed without having to use a switcher and buy individual scart cables for each console.

thanks in advance for your support!

  • When in doubt, I've been consuming the sage advice the MLiG team has been putting into their videos.
  • Also, www.retrorgb.com is an awesome resource, too.
  • SNES doesn't require modification. SNES and Genesis (most models) do RGB right out of the box.

I've got a snes mini for the better RGB chip set, you just have to add it back to the connector.
  • Ah. I'very always been partial to the "model 1" SNES, for nostalgia purposes. I've heard the Mini has the best picture of the bunch (once modded).
  • I always liked the eject button on the original SNES. When I was a kid, I had a way of ejecting the game and catching it in mid-air. It probably wasn't very good for the connector, though.

The mini is quite a bit more crisp. I have both mini and a normal snes. I wouldnt never go back to a non-mini snes.
  • I didn't notice my typo until I read it in your quote lol. Gotta love when the auto correct gets fake words stuck in it's library.
  • Just did this a couple of days ago. I bought a SNES to SCART cable, and bought a 1 ft SCART male to female extention cable that I removed the casing at one end, and soldered on wires to run to BNC the adapters (which you can buy for cheap, they have the BNC connector at one end and screw down terminals at the other). For the SNES there were 4 BNC connectors, R, G, B and sync. Its the multi port in the back and its set up to output RGB from all consoles except the mini, and that can be modded to output RGB). They sell premade cables for the SNES that go straight from the multi out to BNC, but they're $30-40 and this can be done for less than $10. The other systems, check each system and see if they sell SCART cables, then you can use that 1 ft section adapter to plug in all your different systems. Or if you want to spend some money you can get a SCART box to plug in your various systems.
  • And regarding your RCA to BNC adapter, I had considered that as well but that would mean more cables to modify and the SCART extension cable was perfect to solder wires onto if that's what your plan. I don't believe they make SNES multi out to RCA where the RCA outputs were RGB. Can't say I've seen RGB outputs on RCA, just the YPbPr component outputs on RCA, so you're likely looking at some fabrication work. You could make it work with RCA cabling but I think its more work than going to SCART on each system. then you can connect them via a box and not have to fiddle with wiring
