Thinking of Balloon Fight Mechanics

Since I don't want to highjack captainolimar's thread, what other games use this mechanic? Yeah, this should really have Joust and not Balloon Fight in the title, but I liked his thread title, and now you get to do a double-take  . So besides Joust, Joust II, and Balloon Fight, what else is there? I'm thinking mostly 2D games, though I suppose that they don't have to be side-scrolling (Ys?). I've always like Joust, but have never really seen much else like it (I just learned about Balloon Fight a year ago maybe)? Anyways, thanks for any help!

  • Star Keeper homebrew from a couple years ago uses the same movement scheme. Not sure, but I think it was based off of Balloon Fight.

FYI OP, this game was ported to the North American market as Balloon Kid (GB).

What specific aspect of the game are you referring to?

    The jousting (higher lance) mechanic?

    Or the flight mechanic?

Because I would dispute that the flight mechanic in Joust is similar enough to Balloon Fight to be called the same game mechanic.

Joust you can really build up speed laterally, and it completely changes the nature of the game compared to how slow and deliberate Balloon Fight is, by comparison.

  • Flappy Bird is really just a twist on it where horizontal speed and direction are locked.
  • Are we just talking old games? Because, Killer Queen is a fantastic relatively new arcade game that makes great use of the mechanic.

  • Adam and Eve on the Caltron/Myriad 6-in-1 is a direct ripoff.
  • Thinking of the enemy contact mechanic, sorry.
  • Balloon Kid on the GB/GBC. It does share some of the same mechanics.

In that case, "high lance wins" is sort of analogous the primary combat mechanic in the vast majority of 2D platformers, right?

  • There's a Balloon Fight section is Abobo's Big Adventure.
  • Sorry, we'll rephrase this again. Looking for a combination of:

    -Joust/Balloon Fight-like player/enemy contact

    -Flight, flapping or otherwise

Thanks noobGuy for the Hello Kitty World link. The boss/enemy sections were exactly what I am looking for. Killer Queen is a great example Blizzard, I just played it for the first time but already forgot about it (and XMAS 2014). I'll have to check out that Adam and Eve game Tulpa, as well as Balloon Kid that other brought up. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

This can be moved to Gamer's Gauntlet too, come to think of it, if anyone wants to do that.

    Done

Also, Killer Queen definitely fits what you're talking about. Everyone should check that out if you get a chance. Tons of fun.
  • Sir Lancelot for the Atari 2600 is another, IIRC.
  • Jetpac for the ZX Spectrum uses a similar flight mechanism

The sounds in that game are very annoying. They could have named it Fartsplosion because when enemies explode it sounds like flatulence.

Haha! Sound on the Spectrum was pretty bad all round. I used to play Ghostbusters on it which used the worst appropriation of the Ray Parker Jr track imaginable. It also made a terrible attempt at speech emulation, saying "Ghostbusters" whenever you caught a ghost. It sounded like it was being said by a guy with a pair of socks stuffed in his mouth and locked in a trunk.

I was going to say this. If you don't have a speccy on hand you can also play it on DK64 or on Rare Replay for the xbone.

Also the flight mechanics from balloon fight were used as the base for swimming in Super Mario Bros iirc
  • I was wondering if some swimming levels might work, but the contact mechanic is usually missing. The gravity often feels off in them too, but surely there are some.
