August Game #1: Contra III
Rules
- Goal -> Progression
- Tiebreaker -> Low Score
- No continues allowed
- Play until your life counter reads 0, and then take a screenshot. Do not play on your final life
- After getting your screenshot for progression, kill yourself on your final life to get your score. I will be pretty granular with progression though, so that should be your main focus. The tiebreaker should only be needed if people die in the exact same spot, or if multiple people clear the game.
- Keep the difficulty on the default setting
- Bump up the starting lives to the maximum
- Farming 1UPs by killing infinite spawning enemies is forbidden
Rules
- Goal -> High Score
- Play on the default settings
- No continues allowed
- Re-playing cleared stages is not allowed
- Farming infinite spawning enemies is forbidden
- After running out of lives, choose continue, and start a new level. Take a pic of the high score at that point
- If you beat the final boss, quickly take a pic before it goes to the credits
- Participation - 10,000

Didnt die until a cheap death hit mid air and fell into water in dino dolphin boss level
Thanks. Updated the rules.
ok so 2 pictures for contra III. Got it
I haven't played Joe and Mac in probably 20 years, need to brush up on that one for sure!
all i got to say about contra III is eff stage 3. Lose the flame whip and your just boned.
Well i got to the last stage in joe and mac. Died at the stupid trex . Didnt have enough hearts and on my laat life. I continued just to try and beat it for the hell of it after snapping a pic and got to the blue devil part. That last fight drags out forever. Beat the red devil dude but failed at the blue one. That is an endurance boss fight.
I remember the final boss fight being a huge ordeal that takes forever when I beat the game recently.
im definitely going to beat this one soon. I had a 25 year headstart on this game. Rented it a few times. Loved dinosaurs when i was 6-7 years old and i loved this game
i think what makes the final boss feel longer is there is no health meter so you are just hitting him over and over and have no clue how much longer.
I keep saying this, but I'm going to actually make time and try this month, specifically with Contra III. I beat it on hard with the lives exploit, but I think in the process I learned the levels enough that I could get a decent finish in playing legit
Never played Joe and Mac I don't think. I may have rented it way back in the 90s, but I don't remember anything about the game. Looking forward to that too.
You can pause the game where I did below right after you beat the boss with your score changed. You cant pause it once the sequence where the girl runs out. If you dont get a picture you technically can start a new game and your Hi Score will be at the top of the screen to the right of your now 0 current score. After the End it does go back to main menu. Once you turn the game off the hi score resets
Got all the keys this run. Missed a few lives though. Still had 7 left when I beat it though
Joe and Mac- Completed w/ High Score of 163,600
why does it keep rotating my picture. This time it was added correctly, and when it showed up in the posting area it was rotated to the left. WTF
Contra III - 3rd Stage Boss - 207,739
I got hit as I was standing there pausing for the picture at zero lives. Barely got the picture in lol. I got to this boss a few times. Only beat them once but after some continues so that didnt count. Im just not that good at contra III
the fire seems the best for alot of bosses though.
I dont mind the boomerang on the easier ones like trex. The fire explodes on the ground and helps with the wooly mammoth.
Love me some Contra 3, even though I think I still prefer the NES entries. The twin-fire technique, while cool-looking, I have yet to find a practical use for. The forced jump/spin delay of it simply puts you in too much danger for it to be worthwhile. Contrary to the first two games, the Spread Gun is actually one of the worst weapons in this one. Yeah, the spread coverage is nice but the bullets are very weak and the rate of fire leaves you open too often. The Homing Gun is more reliable than Spread here. Fire is almost certainly the best weapon for general stage-clearing, Laser is the best on the top-down stages and the Crush Gun is the best for most bosses.
I've gotten to the point with the game that I can no-death Stages 1-3 most of the time and Stage 4 about half the time. It's mostly falling off the jagged corridors in Stage 5 that gets me or (the worst offenders in this game), getting blockaded by a Twylobite while crossing an exploding bridge. I try to avoid the bridges if at all possible for that reason.
Stage 6 is the real beast and low-scoring that stage is next to impossible. Mobs and projectiles will pile up so quickly at certain points that if you're not clearing the screen, you'll be completely skunked. Not a chance. And the final boss is a real bastard, too.
Update: Reached Stage 6, right before the final boss rush. If you have the Crush Gun, the boss rush itself isn't too hard, except if you get unlucky with Red Falcon's final form.
Update: Game complete! Against the final form of the Red Falcon brain, I found the "eyeball" and "blue legs" forms the easiest to deal with. Keeping the score down was rough, though. It's so counter-intuitive to a hectic run-and-gun like Contra.
Joe & Mac - 149,700
This is one of those games that I've always known about but never owned, rented or even played for more than a few minutes at a time. It's an interesting platformer, a bit sluggish perhaps but ultimately fun. The jumping controls are the only real gripe I have with it. Got as far as Stage 10 for the first time ever. For those who know the game better than I, is there any strategy to avoiding the lightning bolts in that stage or are you just at the mercy of the game? They seem to strike at the exact same progress points but because they're "baited" that way, I can't seem to avoid getting hit by them. Actually, the entire stage (and it's boss) seem rigged to drain your lives.
Update: Got to the final boss but couldn't finish off his second form. Joe & Mac was really fun once I started to get into it. Certainly a game I'll have to play more often.
The lightning. it blinks in the background before striking. You need to do a quick pullback move when you see it. You really have to just know its coming. That level has so much meat in it though I usually just take the hit. Other than the lightning and trex that level isnt too tough.
Is that the skeletal boss where you move up and down? When I beat the game earlier this year I think I remember finding a way to dodge his stuff
yeah there is one thing you can do to not get hit . It really is a cheap boss. Should be a more obvious way to avoid it.
