The game is "remotely playable" with a SINGLE controller.

It is EASILY and COMPLETELY playable with TWO controllers.

The twin stick mechanism with two d-pads works.  "Remotely playable" is bordering on ridiculous.

Like I said, I'm glad that you can play the game and enjoy it, but I don't like the control scheme or the compromises they made to put it on the NES. I think the NES version is unplayable with one controller and remotely playable with two. I also think it's tough to play on the Genesis, playable and enjoyable on the SNES (especially if you have the accessory that comes with Libble Rabble), and even better on Midway Arcade Treasures on the PS2 or PS3.

I don't really understand why you're going to the lengths you're going to to try to convince me my feelings about the game and experiences with the game are incorrect. They're my expriences and they're my opinions, and I have expressed them as such by with phrases like "I think" and "I prefer" throughout my posts. I haven't used any absolutes in regards to Smash TV itself. You're taking exception to them because they don't mirror your own thoughts about the game.

If you're trying to change my mind, arguing about how bad or not bad the NES control scheme is isn't going to do it. You can like it, and others can like it. People who like it aren't wrong for liking it. But I don't like it, and you arguing against my opinions and insisting that a control scheme I don't like is good won't change my feelings towards the NES version of the game.
  • I'll just add that two-controller NES Smash TV is quite a bit more comfortable with two dogbone controllers.
  • SNES has the best port of Smash TV but I do like the Genesis version as it retains some of the violent player deaths that was censored in the SNES port.
  • SNES all the way! I prefer it to the Arcade version but probably just cuz i played it more

Wii Mote and Nunchuck was the default control scheme for many games last gen *shrug*

Another bonus is the NES game has the "dark archon" mode that allows 2 players to control one dude by each using a controller. Technically that would make it a 4 player game XD

  • Anybody play the nes one with two advantages on a table? That would be pretty rad

Doesn't the Advantage have a two-port plug, though? Not sure how that would work.

you don't have to plug both in afaik. There is a switch on the controller to go from player 1 to 2 and you'd just take turns no?

Somebody should test this out  I don't have two advantages unfortunately
  • lmao. arch angel would argue anything

no its not just as comfortable holding a second nes controller in your other hand.
  • I suppose the NES version functions with the dual controller layout but that just makes the SNES single controller version that much better.

I don't think that was ever in doubt.

But I think Arch's point is that the NES version isn't terrible. And if you're like me, who doesn't actively play much SNES, the NES version is fine.

arch took it one step too far saying its just as comfortable holding two controllers with dual dpad , one in each hand.

wiimote with nunchuck isnt really two controllers. Its basically just a seperated thumbstick to allow the wiimote to point at the screen. Thats not the same thing at all. Its one controller separated in your hands

  • Will be buying the nes smash tv in a few days, looking forward to giving it another chance!
  • Absolutely snes version. The controller works perfect.
  • The SNES version is an excellent conversion of the arcade game, so naturally I'd go with that. However, the NES version still plays really well.. a lot better than a game of this type ever should on the NES. Once you get used to the way strafing works, it's quite solid, if hard on the hands. I never did try the two d-pad or joystick options, but can't imagine it working too well without having some kind of base to mount two advantage sticks so they don't move around while playing.
  • After recently picking up smash tv, I have to say, i find the two controllers method to be pretty playable and fun. The only problem the nes game has is the amount of lives you get and many of stages seem repetitive and can seem boring. I guess all you need is some really good music in the background to get through the game.

You're really splitting hairs to find a difference between the two, IMO.

It sounded like the complaint people had was with the ergonomics of holding a controller in each hand, separately, versus holding your hands together with a single controller.

A Wii Remote and Nunchuk present pretty much that exact situation, with the only difference being a fairly small difference in controller size (when compared to the bulk of modern controllers).

Maybe if you had tiny hands, one NES d-pad per hand is an issue... but I played that style just fine as a kid, with no complaints.

Clearly it's a matter of personal preference, and tolerance for unusual controller setups, but it works well as a control scheme.

That said, obviously the SNES version is the superior game, based on graphics and how true it stays to the arcade version.

I just vehemently dispute that the control configuration is a problem, if you play the game the right way (i.e. 2 dpads) so that it functions correctly as a twin stick shooter.

If the controller was a problem, the game wouldn't be winnable, reliably, IMO, and that definitely isn't the case.
  • I have to be honest. I've been at this game for weeks and keep dying at the end, no matter how much I practice. Using the two controllers is awesome and makes the game very playable but the game takes far too long to beat and feels incredibly bland and draining unlike any other nes game I've played before. I think the major problem is the lack of music, the stages are too long, and often times the levels don't feel stimulating enough overall which can cause you lose focus, and lose lives easily. I'm not impressed with this version of the game, and I have to say, I considered it a pretty hard game , at least for me, but not for good reasons.
