Tired old discussion...Xbox vs PS2 vs GCN

Full disclosure....I decided that I wasnt going to really revisit the original Xbox because I cant cheat at the games like I can with PS2 and GCN but then I remembered it has a GameShark AND Action Replay with power saves, not the same but acceptable. I simply dont have time to grind on RPG's and build up levels and get wiped out over and over hence the need for the cheat device. That being said I currently have for Xbox both KOTOR games, Fable, both Halo games, Ninja Gaiden Black, Shenmue 2, Jedi Starfighter SE, both Jedi Academy games and Bards Tale. My questions are first of all what am I missing form that list that would be very very awesome and secondly exactly how much better or worse are Xbox games from PS2 and GCN?

  • I think each system has its own gems and multi-system games that work better on different systems. In my opinion I like racing games on xbox and platformers and puzzle games on GC. I never had a PS2...

Crimson skies is another xbox game you should have...it fun
  • Well being a Nintendo collector the Gamecube is my fav of the 3, but I think they're all pretty good. That was the only generation where I owned all of the big 3 consoles when they were new.
  • I pick the PS2 mostly because of all the classic collections of games for it, and the few cool exclusives that I really liked like Jak and Daxter games and GOW games. That said, I own all three so I'm not really putting myself out to pick one. All three have great exclusives worth playing. I've also noticed that some cross platform games tend to be better on the Xbox as well. Psychonauts is a good example of this. It runs way better on xbox than it does on PS2.  Return to castle wolfenstein is another.   I guess my real advice would be, if you've got the money and the space, get all of them.

On games I would recommend: Oddworld Strangers Wrath, Jade Empire, Genma Onimusha, Galeon, Cronicles of Riddick, Arx Fatalis, Otogi, Sid Meier's Pirates

I don't have a lot of xbox games, so I'll be looking at these suggestions too.
  • Ps2 all day.

Just the sheer amount of quality games and the fact there was something for everyone.

Xbox was also awesome and had some cool features and exclusives. Like being able to play music while playing certain games. Ill never forget playing project gotham racing with jimi hendrix playing when i was like 13.

    Ps2

    Xbox

    Gc
  • GC

    -

    -

    xbox

    dreamcast

and if we have to include ps2

    ps2
  • PS2 is king. Just the sheer number of games on the system dwarfs everything else. So much variety from huge heavy hitters to cult classic, it really is a system that has something for everyone.

After that I'd say Gamecube. It had a couple stand out titles from Nintendo (F-Zero GX goat), but many of the titles felt inferior to their N64 counterparts. Sunshine and Windwaker are good, but they didn't rock the world like Mario 64 and OoT/Majora's Mask did.

Xbox was the Halo box. I know it had the Bioware and some neat Sega stuff, but the reason everyone played it was for Halo. It had some cool features and pushed online gaming into the mainstream, but its library is the weakest of the three.

Honorable mention to Dreamcast. It came out first and didn't last long but it made a big impact with some amazing titles from Sega and killer arcade ports. Twice as bright, half as long.
  • best selection of exclusive games /party games Gamecube

best hardware/online and best system for multiplats Xbox

best scrappy underdog story/sleeper hits Dreamcast

best dvd player for a suburban family in the early 2000 Ps2
  • what about Sudeki for xbox? It looks like an RPG but I cant tell
  • They all have their advantages. You say you have Fable,. But is it lost chapters? That's got a bunch of extra content. Also +1 on crimson skies.

  • gamecube

og xbox sucks , hated that thing. ps2 I never bought or played any games on it so no opinion, dreamcast has some cool games, gamecube has a lot of really great games.

at $5 just get it. ive heard good things. havnt played it myself, but to me that game is a good example of why xbox is so great. %90 of the library is dirt cheap and super easy to find as nobody seems to collect for it yet. im always finding great stuff for the xbox at record stores and hole in the wall "we buy electronics stores". i got my shenmue 2 from a dimple records for like 5-10.

also xbox has some of those pc games that were never ported to any of the other consoles of that generation. first one that comes to mind (and one of my personel reasons for owning the og xbox) is rollercoaster tycoon.

It is. I really enjoyed it BTW. Each character has a different play style. Magic users control like a FPS and melee fighters are more Zelda hack and slash. Good amount of humor, and nice visuals - definitely one of the stronger titles in the Xbox library.

  • My ranking:
    1. PS2 - Not close. The PS2 has way more quality imports and NTSC releases. There is something for everyone, and usually there is three or four of something for everyone.
    2. Gamecube - A distant second. Has good Nintendo titles which pushes it ahead of the Xbox, IMO, but the controller is not designed for certain genres, such as FPS games or 2D/3D fighters, and other genres are almost nonexistent on the console (RPGs, puzzle games).
    3. Xbox - Very close to GC. Has a wider variety of games than the Gamecube, but was also light on certain genres of games, and, while it had lots of quality games, I think the GC had more.
    4. Dreamcast - Has some must-have titles, and many good games, but the small library hurts it in comparison to the PS2, GC, and Xbox.

Also, Sudeki is great. Certainly one of my favorites on the Xbox.
  • 1. By far, PS2. You can spend the rest of your life playing PS2 and never get bored. Just an amazing library you can get lost in forever. Not to mention it's backwards compatible with the PS1. Insane RPG collections can be had from these two systems alone, but every other genre is well-represented too. You can't go wrong. It's a good contender for best console of all time (one of my close friends believes it is); it's a varitable Shangri-La of gaming.

    2. XBox. This console had the best graphics of that generation, and most often was the host of the best version of multiplatform games. This console picked up the torch that the Dreamcast left behind and kept running with it, with games like Jet Set Radio Future and Shenmue 2.

    3. Dreamcast. This console feels like the logical continuation of the Saturn and Neo Geo. Hard-hitting arcade perfect experiences. This wins over Gamecube for having such a unique and quirky library.

    4. Gamecube. The first part Nintendo titles were the worst Nintendo has ever done, the multiplats were middle-of-the-road, and if you weren't impressed by the new Mario and Zelda games, and aren't into Resident Evil, this console had very little to offer that the other consoles didn't already have.
  • Hands down the PS2. Not even close. The library is near 2000 games and there are so many quality games it's ridiculous.

Xbox - Halo, new console on the block, great graphics

Gamecube - Definitely the loser of the three. Controller was weird. Number of games seems limited compared to the other two consoles. Did have some good quality titles, but very few and far between.
  • It's been said a few times, but I'll reiterate; the PS2 was a juggernaut compared to its peers. The question is second place.

Gamecube had a handful of the generation's best games (Melee, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness) but also suffers from a lack of B-grade titles.

In this sense, I think XBOX takes second place. A large library, with a lot of solid games, both exclusive and otherwise.

Dreamcast was conspired against by fate, and has to remain the interesting footnote with its solid niche support.

    PS2 > XBOX > GC > DC.

    I guess.

There's solid arguments to shuffle 2, 3, and 4 around, based on your metrics. I'd love to see a good argument for dethroning PS2, but one isn't coming to mind immediately.
  • graphically ps2 was the worst. xbox and gc are pretty close

For online gaming xbox was the best by a longbshot. Many of friends were really into online so they had xbox.

as for library, PS2 is just a monster. It has all the games (minus a handful of gc and xbox exclusives)

Even games that were SUPPOSED to be exclusives to other consoles (like Viewtiful Joe and Resident Evil 4) made their way to the PS2.
  • Gamecube is my favorite, probably my favorite system ever honestly.

PS2 is good and I have good memories of playing it at my friend's house, although I didn't get one of my own until 2007.

I never liked the original XBox. I don't think I've touched mine since I bought my friend's 8 years ago.

If Dreamcast is being included, that's also another system I didn't get until way later and but I think I might actually rank that below GC and above PS2 just based off the fun I've had playing it with my friends the past year or two.
  • The PS2 absolutely destroys both, even though - few of my favorite games of all time were on the Xbox (ESPN Football, Spiderman 2, and Collin McRae Rally).
  • I have played all, and each have their own games which makes each system worth owning. That being said, I believe the PS2 has a huge library and can find almost any type of genre to play and like it.
  • The PS2 really dusted the competition and this is coming from a dude that preferred xbox back then. Looking back I think I just enjoyed ripping music and putting it on the harddrive. I just remember plaing halo and snowboarding games listening to Dr. Dre's theChronic while on the chronic.
  • The PS2 really is the king of that era, and I never officially owned one myself. I had the GCN since the Christmas it launched (opened mine 12/25/2001). I played the absolute hell out of my GCN for years, up until about 2008 when I sold it along with all my games. What a weird gen, TBH. If I was in the mood for any of that stuff anymore, I'd just get a PS2.
  • I own all 3 but I'd say PS2 hands down. When you factor in the already huge library with backwards compatibility of playing original Playstation games, it's the king. However, Xbox and GC both have some really good exclusives worth owning the consoles for.

Fable Lost Chapters, Halo, Crimson Skies, Oddworld series, Star Wars games, and even Toe Jam and Earl III for Xbox. Xbox also has the slight edge on graphics compared to PS2 and GC.

Zelda, Mario, Eternal Darkness, Geist, Skies of Arcadia Legends, RE series, and Star Fox Adventures/Assault for GC. There's also the GB player to play your GB/GBC/GBA games on a big screen with a controller.
  • I like PS2
  • All 4 gen 6 consoles were good if you include Dreamcast. GameCube is easily my favorite of the bunch because of exclusives like Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Luigi's Mansion, and Animal Crossing. GCN even got s lot of DC ports like Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure 1 &2, and Phantasm Star Online. PS2 had a lot of games, dome really great ones, as did Xbox but I'd have to rank them as: GC , DC, PS2, XB.
  • If you already have a game for PS2 but its also available for Xbox do you go ahead and get it?
  • If it's Psychonauts or Return to Castle Wolfenstein, you do. I can't really speak for any others. Frame rate for Psychonauts on PS2 was terrible and RTCW was missing content.
  • Which games are currently more collectible, Xbox or gcn? Seems like ps2 was & is everywhere but good gcn & Xbox is much harder to find. Has the market really been tapped yet for these?

Gamecube and it's not even close.

xBox, for the most part, is relatively cheap aside from a few games.

In my experience, xBox games are pretty easy to find, although the local supply seems to be drying up, probably because I bought most of them.
