What Sort of Party Do You Use in Pokemon?

Exactly what it sounds like. Grass? Water? Fire? Psychic? Steel? Dragon? Etc?

I find myself leaning toward grass and dragon types, even in X. Discuss!

  • In the games I always used the three starter types, electric, flying and then a random (depending on the generation), but for battling other people I lean more towards ground, dragon, and steel types.
  • If you are referring to your standard 6 Pokemon team I can't really elaborate on that as the way that game has its competitive battling system set up you usually play 3vs3.

I have done years and years of competitive battling and my team always 100% no matter WHAT has a Blissey in it....Another excellent Pokemon for battling is Azumarill.

If I were to go for a third Pokemon I would probably choose something with incredibly high speed stat like Jolteon or Scizor.

A couple other Pokemon that I have ran into consistently online battling are:

    Crobat

    Rhyperior

    Aegislash

    Greninja

Rotom (Washing Machine form or whatever the hell it is)

    Dragonite

    Garchomp

    Togekiss

    Mega-Alakazam

    Mega-Gengar

    Blaziken

    Garvantula

There is a whole bunch more of course but I was thinking of ones that have literally whooped my ass many times.
  • You must mean in the story mode. I just go for balance, and try to get as many dual types as possible.
  • I tend to switch up my type combinations every time I play just to mix things up. But my favorite types are probably electric, ground, flying, fire, psychic and fighting.

I bet you can't guess my favorite dragon Pokemon.
  • I use psychic heavily because they were overpowered in gen 1 and I've always liked them as a result. I generally try to get an Alakazam as quickly as possible and level it up with whatever fighting type I have as a #2 to deal with dark type Pokemon. In the story it doesn't really matter what else you have since the games are pretty easy and I don't play online competitively.
  • A good HM slave, high speed lead, bulky character, spinner/support, sweeper, some kind of wild card tech to try and break the meta.

One thing I don't like is setups that deal with weather manipulation.
  • I dont really create teams. Whatever i choose as my starter i level up a ton before i take on the first gym and wipe the game with one pokemon. It can be a pain in the ass when it gets above the level limit for my badge level but i can usually work around it
  • i mainly use dragon pokemon
  • I'm going to go with in-game for an answer; competitive is more complex and dynamic. Generally, a fire/water/grass core is nice, along with a flyer, an HM slave, and one other random slot. I'm especially thinking about the first few generation of games.
  • Always use a fire type (usually starter)

Other than that, it varies. Water, electric, fighting and psychic are common. I rarely use steel, poison, grass or normal.

But my current playthru of Red...

    Primeape (fighting)

    Charizard (fire/flying)

    Kabutops (water/rock)

    Electabuzz (electric)

    Hypno(psychic)

    Nidoking (poison/ground)
  • In game, I always take the fire starter. Then a water type (preferably water/ice for STAB Ice Beam), electric type, ground type, psychic type, and finally whatever I feel like having on my team.

In my last playthrough of Red, I had

    Charizard

    Lapras

    Jolteon

    Dugtrio

Mew (yes, I used the Mew glitch)

    Tauros/Dragonite

Comptetition is where combinations thrive, IMHO. It allows for more complexity as you said.

Actually, I used to do this all the time when I was younger. I'd never put much thought into a well-rounded team; I'd just melee through the game with a couple level 80-100's and call it a day.

    High-five!
  • In game I always go with my starter on my first play through and make it a tank (drop the starter on subsequent runs for fun) then I try and come up with a balanced team of Pokemon that are new to that generation of game. Gotta have a flying type, and I usually try and space HM s out between a couple Pokemon if I can, or have an HM slave to withdraw when I need it. Other than that I just try to have fun sometimes I just Pokemon I think are cool xD
  • In the original 150 i always used this team, sometimes substituting for the ones in parentheses. But always a combo of the below pokemon

All of them are some of my favorites to train and use.

    Gengar (Exeggcutor)

    Alakazam (Mr. Mime)

    Dragonite (Gyarados)

    Machamp (Hitmonchan)

    Poliwrath (Lapras)

    Jolteon (Rhydon)
  • I use whoever looks cool to me. No strategy, just level up higher than the trainers and gym leaders and spam the "A" button. Hahaha

I also rename my Pokemon so I don't remember their original names.

    Yeah, I suck at Pokemon.
  • I always build my team based on who I think looks the coolest. If I'm being slightly more competitive, I'll look into strategies, and change my team, but when I play for fun I like using who I think looks the coolest.
  • I love Grass Pokemon because I love plants in real life so I usually have 2-3 on my team while I am playing the game. I also love Bug pokemon and usually have one on my team as well. As for the other spots I usually just fill it in with whatever pokemon looks neat or sometimes I fill those spots with pokemon I have never used before.
  • When sun/moon come out I'd like to try to build a competitive team. but what I did before was grab one or two that can take on the majority of gyms (in gen 2 it's geodude, effective against all except Pryce, Clair and Chuck) and the rest is set up for the elite four. Plus one hm slave

I wanted to pick different pokemon that I normally don't use this time around, and I've come across a few unfortunate realizations. Primeape doesn't learn a single fighting move that gains STAB except for Submission (karate chop is normal in gen 1 and he only learns low kick in Yellow). Counter relies on the oponent to use a physical attack move, seismic toss is a static damage Submission isn't that great because it has recoil and only an 80% accuracy and 80 power. Nidoking is in the same boat with poison moves, only being able to learn Poison Sting which has, what, like 15 power? He's strong enough with hyper beam, thrash/body slam and earthquake that it doesn't matter, but it always bothers me to not have a move of the same type. Kabutops can't learn any rock moves, and water doesn't benefit his high attack stat.

Hypno is great in gen 1 because of the grouped special stat, especially with Psychic/Hypnosis/Dream Eater. Charizard is a main stay in my gen 1 teams so no complaints. Electabuzz was always cool so it's neat to have him on a team, even though I usually go with Raichu or Jolteon.

I love gen 1 but I'm glad they fixed so many of these things in later gens.
  • As of right now, my party in X consists of:

    Venusaur lv 60

    Chesnaught lv 58

    Solrock lv 53

    Lapras lv 45

    Doublade lv 44

    Magneton lv 42

My goal is to catch a Dratini in the upcoming section of the game, and level it up to Dragonite. It's gonna happen
  • Your team needs a fairy type in there. Gardevoir are killer psychic/fairy.
