Starting my NES adventure

Hello Everyone,

After placing my order for the AVS and having the chance to finally be able to play NES games without going blind, i immediately got excited to finally start the NES adventure. Late i know, but better late than never, especially when we are talking about the NES.

I know this topic has been beaten to death, and i could search google but where is the fun in that! I would much rather chat about these games with you guys on here and get recommendations from you ladies and gents personally, if you wouldn't mind of course? Half the fun for me of collecting is being able to come here and chat about topics like this rather than just always resort to YT videos and read articles.

So here is the basic off the top of my head list. Keep in mind i only had 8 NES games growing up! I play mostly anything, i am only excluding titles that have better arcade counterparts as i have a MAME cab. Of course there are some exceptions thanks to the PC10 putting some of the best in arcade format. Even so you can recommend them! Will update the list as people add games.

Was thinking of getting an N8 but where my list is pretty small, i could probably get actual carts for not to bad of a price and it would be nice to own most of the classics.

Metroid

Mario's

Castlevania series

Final Fantasy

Ninja Gaiden series

Blaster master

RC pro Am

Mega Man series

Totally Rad

Gargoyles Quest

Kirby

Battletoads

Zelda 1 and 2

Metal Gear

Double Dragons(Better on NES? arcade lags horribly)

Batman

Basewars

Thanks a bunch everyone

  • It's cool to observe someone get into NES from ground zero. I think there are a few titles you should seek out not on your list.

    Contra

    Startropics series

    Crystalis

    Faxanadu

    Shadowgate/Deja Vu/Uninvited

    Adventures of Lolo series

Only to name a few must haves!!!
  • I'd personally omit Basewars and go for Baseball Stars
  • It's actually not really that late to collect for the nes. Yes, there are a lot of games that go for crazy prices but the majority of them are dirt cheap compared to snes games. I been having way too much fun playing 3D World Runner that I got this past weekend for $5. This is a game I ignored when I was young because the cover just looked bad and didn't have much nintendo power coverage. I have also always been a baseball fan so having tons of fun playing different nes baseball games which go for nothing. Nes sports games to me are tons of fun because they tend to be of the simple arcade type which are awesome.

I second Baseball Stars.  Best baseball game on the system.

  • Double Dragon II is a better bet than Double Dragon imho, especially since it's co-op.

I'd recommend some puzzle-type games as well, such as Dr. Mario (cheap) or Fire N' Ice (expensive but worth it).

I'd grab Duck Tales as well
  • Willow

    Star Tropics

    Crystalis
  • Marble Madness

    Snake Rattle N Roll

    Contra/Super C
  • Faxanadu

    Battle of Olympus

    Yoshi's Cookie

    Kickle Cubicle

    Adventure Island

    Vice Project Doom

    Shatterhand

    Zanac
  • I personally love wizards and warriors. Cheap game to own and very beatable. Plus the music is great too!
  • Lolo, Yoshi's Cookie, Slalom and Pinball are all games I get a lot of playtime from that don't cost much
  • Palamedes and Mendel Palace are both excellent puzzle type games that feature two player action. Pin Bot is awfully fun if you dig pinball, and Gauntlet II is essential (especially with four players!).

baseball stars is the best sports game on the NES and for my money one of the top dozen or so games on the system.   An all time classic
  • ^ note: baseball stars #1 is the one you want, not #2 as much.
  • A lot of the Capcom Disney games are great, Duck Tales, Chip N Dale, Darkwing Duck are top notch, Little Mermaid and Adventures in the Magic Kingdom are really good as well. Don't get Talespin though.
  • imo there are a few really fantastic games that are expensive enough that if you're more a gamer than a collector I would just go for it and grab a power pak

    -gun nac

    -double dragon vs battletoads

    -metal storm
  • super dodge ball is a great game on the nes
  • Maniac Mansion and Gremlins 2 are some somewhat lesser known NES games that are definitely worth owning. Also if you play and like the Capcom Disney games search for Little Nemo, which is also by Capcom and has a similar vibe to it. And of course Nintendo World Cup is a must own, soccer fan or not it's ridiculously fun.

    Aren't these SNES games?

Little nemo looks awesome! Had this one on my radar for a while, thanks for the recommendation.

It is funny because baseballs stars is one of my favorite arcade games of all time! Was just playing it the other day on my mame cab. I assume it is the same company? SNK?

  • Kid Niki is cheap and fun. I also recommend Super Spy Hunter, Cobra Triangle, Surf Designs, and Bad News Baseball, which in my opinion is the best baseball game on the system. The umpires are rabbits for crying out loud. Give it shot.

Just Battle Toads vs Double Dragon.

Power Pak would go great with your new AVS

Ahh good eye. I looked quick and saw battle toads vs double dragon and then metal storm which i misread as Metal Warriors.

  • I highly recommend Jackal. It's a rad game.
  • I'm going to move this to Gamer's Gauntlet

Just to add a few that haven't been mentioned...

Destiny of an Emperor is a great RPG with a unique battle system and awesome music.

Guardian Legend is a unique adventure/shmup hybrid that is a must play.

Clu Clu Land is a bit quirky, but it's a really fun game and one that I go back to often.
  • I had never played most NES games, but have had a blast since jumping into the competition*. I'd recommend doing that with the last 7 games, or joining up next year. Lots of great titles. Like a game of the week club almost.  In fact I would urge you do it next year for that reason.

*Except Iron Sword.  That game can die.
  • xexyz, castlevania 2 simons quest, festers quest, double dragon 2, river city ransom, tmnt, tmnt 2 the arcade game, tiger heli, legacy of the wizard, narc, faxanadu, crystalis,gi joe the atlantis factor, nightmare on elm street, mr gimmick, rush n attack. I got a ton more i can add but just one more, low g man.
  • Loads of great recommendations already. Here a list of a few, excluding anything too expensive (some may have already been mentioned). Base Wars is a rad game btw.

    Kirby

    Super C/Contra

Capcom titles (Rescue rangers, duck tales, darkwing)

    Marble Madness

    Solomon's Key

    Kickle Cubicle

    Micro Machines

    TMNT II

    Ice Hockey

    Blaster Master

    Excitebike

    Space Shuttle
  • I would look at the ones that will be tougher to license for stuff like the NES mini. Ducktales, Batman, TMNT, anything with a license. Get those out of the way first.
