Original Xbox Component Cable question

Can I use the GameLink 400 Monster cables directly into the Xbox or do I need the Advanced High Def AV Pack? I currently have neither but thoiught I remembered reading that I needed the av pack but if that were true why would Monster sell Component cables?

Specific to Xbox. I saw some on eBay for $50

  • I guess another question would be if a game ONLY outputs as high as 480p will component cables do anything for those games? Like will they clean up the edges or give it richer colors anymore than S-Video would?

Dude, don't pay $50 for OG Xbox component cables. I've used a couple of different brands, all around $7 or so, and they've worked great on HDtv's. No external adapters or anything required.

I also have a set of Monster component cables, and there is literally no difference in quality over the cheap Tomee cable.

Yes, 480p will improve and sharpen the picture quality on an HDTV as well as reduce the input lag by removing the need for de-interlacing.

You don't need the advanced A/V box for component video. Any third party XBox component cable will work just as well.

  • I don't remember what it's called, but I have a device that plugs into the A/V out of the Xbox and is about six inches long. This device has component and digital optical audio outputs. From there I run those to my TV and receiver. The nice thing about it is that I can use whatever length cables I want and I can use any brand cable since the outputs are standard RCA/toslink.

That's the Advanced A/V pack Buck was referring to.

  • So y'all are saying to not buy into the hype of the monster cables? But they look so....green. Would you believe that for years I never used anything but composite for my systems? AND I've only ever experienced NES using RF hook ups. I'm hoping my wife took the hint and preordered the AVS for me

Monster branded cables are horribly overpriced at retail, but they are otherwise fine cables. I love finding them for cheap at thrift stores.

Head over to Stoneagegamer, they sell XBox component cables for $8. Also I think Gamestop still sells component cables with XBox/360/PS2/PS3/& Wii connectors as well.

  • Yeah, Monster cables are way overpriced. They're nothing special, other than fancy packaging.

Just grab whatever third party is priced around $5-$10.
  • I definitely don't recommend Monster cables. The set that came with one of my Xboxes(I have 4 modded) had horrible grip, so bad that one of the cables had the plug part from the previous owner's tv lodged in it. They practically tear your tv up if you dare unhook them.
  • Well I got the Halo edition and it actually came with a seriously good set of Components. Unbelievable quality. Now if I can only decide between Action Replay or Gameshark....Any thoughts?

Agreed. This happened to my TV with GameCube component monster cables. I learned that I had to widen the grip with a pair of pliers. This definitely scuffs the metal of the tabs of each plug if you care about reselling later. You also run the risk of snapping the tabs.

I haven't tried the offbrand, but component cables make the original XBox sing. They are definitely worthwhile. Indeed some games output 720p. I believe there may be some that support 1080i but I would always choose a progressive signal at a lower resolution than interlaced at a higher res. I thought the official brand were going for $20-25 still. I guess that changed.

  • I have the monster cables and no name cables. I get a cleaner brighter image with the monster cables. Also in order to activate component on the original xbox. You have to hold both triggers and click both tumbsticks on the controller at the same time at the main screen. Just thought I would mention it not everyone knows.
