Original Xbox Action Replay vs GameShark
I'm about to buy an Action Replay for my Xbox but I have a couple questions that I hope someone here knows the answer to. First, do I want and Action Replay or a Gameshark and why? Second, whichever I choose to get can I update the device automatically since the last version came out like 12 years ago? In other words would there be a compatibility issue with Windows 10? The AR has alot of preloaded codes but there a surely games that I'm going to play that came out after it did. Thanks yall

My understanding is that their XBOX products were just save games. Love to know if I'm wrong about that. I'm pretty sure Digital Ice Media (Datel's own disc manufacturer) did the official XBM magazine cover discs so they probably did have the ability to make a true memory cheat AR but I don't recall them ever doing that.
I don't know much about the original Xbox, but there was a Gameshark for the PS2 that only offered save files that you could put onto your memory card. These saves usually gave you 100% on most games. It didn't really offer cheats, but some games gave you extra stuff if you've "beaten the game" which the GS allowed you to do. I used it to get every car and 999,999 credits in Gran Turismo 3 before starting any races. I'm guessing you had something similar.

I didn't have either because I just plugged a USB thumb drive into the Phantasy Star Online USB keyboard adapter to accomplish the same thing.
Yes, I'm aware that they have made save game cheats on other platforms too. Basically, it's a consequence of not having cracked the protections on a given platform. The first DS Action Replay was a device to copy downloaded save games to and from DS cards, but when DS protections were finally cracked by flash cards and what-not they made a new "code based" AR that worked using the traditional memory address editing. After years of just having a PSP save game manager they eventually made a "code-based" PSP AR too, though I'm not entirely sure how it worked (perhaps using the battery exploit to load CFW?).
The point is, they've gone through this pattern a few times, but I don't recall them ever making a "code based" memory-type cheat product for the XBOX. Did they? I'm pretty sure that the problem was signature verification on the disc required a modded XBOX even with their own disc pressing plant.
There's several ways to get saves onto the Xbox.
Either by connecting a USB flash drive to the console, or an Xbox controller to a PC, then using software that writes to the Xbox file system.
Just be responsible with it. Xbox modding directly enables piracy, the console doesn't need to be opened to read burned discs.
May I ask why you are wanting to buy an AR? If it's for softmodding, you don't need an AR for that anymore. Just get a $2 USB-to-Xbox adapter.
not soft modding although thats a possiblity. No I just dont have time to devote to gaming like I used to so I like a little extra edge
I know my gameshark for ps2 came with a custom memory card that had to be inserted. Maybe its missing that?
When i bought mine for ps2 back in the day it didnt come with a memory card. It also alllowed for actual cheat codes not just giving you 100% save files. I still have it somewhere bought it specifically for GT3 and also used it on Pirates Legend of Black Cat (awesome game by the way)
OK...I found an Action Replay Max for the xbox on ebay and, like the gameshark, wont transfer codes/saves. Does ANY one know how to get this to work?
USB devices require drivers. If it is indeed true there are no 64bit drivers, it won't work on modern Windows setups.
i have an AR Action Replay Max for Xbox i have in my list to get rid of includes the usb cable device to hook up your memory card and powersaves disc. if you want it, throw me a little list of what you have for trade? save you them money off ebay
I actually just bought one but it won't work on Windows 10. I either need to figure out a way around the driver issue or find an XP computer
