Gone Home (PS4)

What the hell did I just play? Thanks Sony for the freebie PS+ game I guess? lol

Edit:  It started off interesting what with the mystery and the art direction/content was cool and all, but my god did the drivel hammer come down hard and fast. I can only blame myself for finishing it lol

  • Don't have a ps4. Explain what the game is like a little bit?

I didn't think it was that bad honestly.

    Possible spoilers

You basically spend 2-3 hours (real time) exploring your home after being away, and you're all alone and you interact with objects to find out what happened to your family.

    SPOILERS:

I thought the game was actually very scary, because of the atmosphere and I was expecting something to happen the entire time. At the end, you find out that isn't the case. Kind of anti-climatic I guess, but it served its purpose to tell a story and the experience was certainly memorable.
  • You're a brave soul for seeing it all the way through, I fell off pretty quickly. The atmosphere just didn't grab me at all.
  • Wow, I thought everyone already knew about this game and its ending.
  • So I know I might have eluded to Gone Home being a 'bad game', but that's not the case at all. I'm just having symptoms similar to buyer's remorse lol

Nope, never even heard of it, I'm really really out of touch with this current gen of consoles.

  • Yea too late for me. I already wasted my money at this game a few months ago. I found it incredibly boring. I was really into the atmosphere at first, but the longer I went without anything happening, the less immersed I became. Then eventually I realized I was literally just searching a house. I stopped playing out of sheer boredom.

The atmosphere sure did win me over.

Spoiler:     I knew I should've stopped playing this game after reading the ghosthunter note in the basement about "Supernatural Occurences: 0"

It's been out on PC for at least three years. Caused a minor furor because of the subject matter and Gamergate the following year. Can't really go into it without major spoilers.

I actually like it, though I can see why people are frustrated with the bait-and-switch of the narrative.

    DELETED
  • I liked it for what it was...but I didn't pay money for it, so that may impact my view somewhat. That said, I kinda knew what it was before I jumped in, so I felt no disappointment or feeling of not getting what I was expecting to get out of it.

Not something that will leave a lasting impression on most folks but not a bad experience, really.
  • I don't have a PS4, but based on the comments here, it sounds like it appeals to a very specific crowd with its atmosphere and story.
  • I love it, and do recommend it to people who like narrative driven games. It's not quite an evolution of old school adventure games, but it's kinda like that. There aren't really puzzles or anything it's just explore the house, open new passages and find more clues about about the story.

I wouldn't call it drivel at all, I found the story interesting, they setup a bunch of misleading bits that are just there to distract you from the real story and they have that bait and switch ending which annoy a lot of people but if you can't relate to the characters it's really effective.

Firewatch which came out later is very similar in concept and execution except it's about an older man instead of a teenage girl so that might be more appealing to those who can't relate.

Thank you, I will have to look into this for PC.

I have Gone Home downloaded from the PS+ freebie too but haven't got around to playing more than 15 minutes of it yet.

If you want something similar with a good story, check out Firewatch and Life is Strange. They're both great games with well done storylines that keep your attention. Firewatch pulled me in from the start and Life is Strange starts to pick up more during the 2nd and 3rd chapters (out of 5) so give it a chance.

Life is Strange might be my favorite game I've played this year, definitely recommending it as well.

I'm gonna have to check out Firewatch.
  • I've played through it twice now on both the PC and the PS4. One of my favorite games of the last 5 years.
  • It also is incredibly lame to make a thread saying "avoid" a game just because you didn't care for it. It's a critically acclaimed game which won multiple game of the year awards. There are plenty of games that are popular that I don't care for I wouldn't be obnoxious enough to post "Public Service Announcement Avoid This Game".
  • I liked it. Same with Dear Esther.
  • I paid $15 for it not long after it was out on PC and I loved it. Finished it in less than 2 hours, but it was worth the money. It told a beautiful, touching story.
  • Valve keeps removing the "Not a Game" tag on Steam.

I declined to even get this game for free through PS+. I don't want The Fullbright Company to get any pennies from me.
  • Never heard of it. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeaaaah I should've waited a little longer before posting my opinion. The title has been fixed and Bob's your uncle.
