PVM Woes

I have been looking at 14'' Sony PVMs on ebay for a while now. They seem to be going for $110-$150 which I guess is reasonable. I keep cheeping out becasue I want to spend around the lower end of that range. Am I being a cheapskate or should I be looking elsewhere for a PVM?

I imagine I will get a lifetime of use out of a PVM I would love to hear from PVM owners and people with experience thanks!

  • I honestly can see no point playing on such a tiny screen. Even as a kid, I had larger TVs than that. On my desk I have the same 3 21" monitors I've been using for about 5 years now. My main TV is 75", gameroom TV is 55", and my old plasma I used from 2002 till last year was 42". Even my laptops were always 17" or 19" inch screens. To me, 14" is a luggable device, something you take with you on road trips. Sure, the picture is good, but on smaller screens, ALL pictures generally improve.

Now, a 29" PVM on the other hand.... yea, I need one of them. Not actively looking however.
  • I have a 14" PVM and it's just fine for personal gaming time. If you plan on having any type of multiplayer, I'd suggest tracking down a 20".
  • I have a Sony PVM-20L5 that I paid $200 for locally. Such a great investment and I've never seen classic games look better. Go for a 20", don't bother with a 14". I'd say get the same model as I have if you can find one. 800 scan lines and multiformat. Can't go wrong
  • People trying to play NES in RGB with PVMs and all that other bullshit are kidding themselves. Just go play on an emulator if you want those sort of graphics.
  • Yeah I wouldn't play on anything this small. I'd go for a normal tv at that rate, I wouldn't need RGB THAT badly.

Not the same man. Trust me, I've tried it all.

NES or earlier perhaps. I consider Master System the first console to ship with usable factory installed RGB.
  • I wouldn't mind RGB on things that do it natively, but something that small...I'd prefer not to play with binoculars.
  • I have a 14" Sony PVM and it is a bit small. However, keep it at the right height, such as on a table where viewing and playing on it is comfortable, it should be fine. I might swap mine out with a friend and pay the difference for a 20", not sure yet though.

As far as "cheaping out", just bite the bullet and pay what you have to. You won't regret it, the picture is so nice compared to anything else out there. I have a Genesis hooked up to it via RGB and it makes the games look like arcade releases. It's pretty awesome.
  • I found a really nice 14" BVM a while back, but it really wasn't worth it for me. The screen is so damn small and the unit is obnoxiously long, and ugly. It was a nice picture, but I prefer a 27" consumer CRT.
