Sunset Riders Difficulty

I fired up Sunset Riders the other day to give it a play through since it is well regarded and looked like a lot of fun. Throughout my playing though I've only ever gotten to the boss of the third stage. How would you rate this game's difficulty and how would it compare to the likes of Contra and Super C (both of which I can one credit clear) or other side scrolling shooters? I feel like I could learn Contra but with Sunset Riders when I pass a stage I feel like I got lucky and couldn't duplicate it.

Yes, I know you can change the difficulty as well as continues. I'm simply curious about the overall difficulty of the game on the regular settings.

Comments

  • Yes, its hard
  • I remember it being tricky when I had it as a kid. Team Cormano!
  • I didn't actually get to play this one until about 2010, and I did find it quite challenging!
  • Yeah its stupid hard, I normally lose most of my lives at the start of stage 2!
  • It is difficult but I find Contra 3 harder, that could be just me though. I played Sunset Riders before Contra 3 so maybe that's why
  • It's an awesome balance of difficulty and great gameplay. I like that games like this and others from the retro era weren't pick up and beat instantly
  • I find Contra and Super C to be much more difficult than Sunset Riders.
  • Ok, I'm glad it's not just me! I like having some difficulty but I also need to feel like I'm making progress through the game.

I was hoping someone would say this! It's so interesting how some games can come more naturally to different people.
  • The correct pronunciation is: "Cowboy Contra"
  • Sunset Riders is very difficult. It is made easier (and much more fun) with a teammate!
  • It's not you, it's me.
  • Yeah this game has gotten me more than frustrated before for sure! Too many quarters put into it trying to get the timing down.
  • Easily harder than OG Contra, might be on par with Super C difficulty-wise

You can't just say you are a champ at game x and y, and expect to ace game z on a trial run. That goes double for Contra and the like where such a big part of it is memorization. Sunset Riders also asks you to physically dodge bullets more often and has a bigger focus on dynamic boss encounters, so it gets quite tricky at times. Chief Wigwam is a nightmare.

The good thing more so than any other game besides maybe Red Dead Redemption, Sunset Riders nails that Wild West ascetic. The presentation and the soundtrack just drips with spaghetti western goodness. It may take you a couple tries to learn the ropes, but it makes replaying stages less painful.

You can always drop the difficulty down to easy or bring a friend for co-op, which allows you to continue mid-stage and that cuts the edge off. But beware, if your buddy isn't as good at the game he might blown threw all his continues quick and you are back to a one player game.

Don't get discouraged OP, just keep at it. You got to walk the walk before you can pull off a run.

I just need to find one of those "Friend" thingies.
