It took me a lot of months to get half decent in order to 1cc it consistently.
Now, for each play through, it takes a bit over an hour to clear it, depending on how cautious with my approach and my advance I am being. This is a game that you need to advance slowly, and the lethargic pace of Ralf & Clark only slows things down further.

How many hours per day on average for regular beat do think it would take?
I feel that after beating this nes version you deserve to play the amiga version via emulation if you can't get it. :

Whenever I beat the game I will have all those numbers for you! It's probably going to be a few months due to my schedule so please be patient. I've put in 15 hours so far and over 100 attempts altogether.

Great, keep at it! I just wanted to know the amount of time in general, not for comparisons.
Man, I need to stop being so bad this game so I can stop dying to the enemies that are with the stage 3 boss.
I haven't played this in a few days. Been on a Mega Man X playing binge lately.
I have been doing one playthrough attempt every day. Will try harder during the weekends.
All my attempts end have ended at that very same spot. I die once there and turn off the system.
There's something to be said about practicing the late game. A one-death run is just as impressive to me as a no-death run. But I know you have high standards for yourself!
I've only had time for one attempt a day lately and they haven't been going all that great. Last night I accidentally self-destructed the helicopter in Stage 1 and later got blown up by a missile just past the final water segment. Stupid stuff that shouldn't be happening to me anymore.

The problem is that after you die, the room configuration has changed already because you killed a guy or several of them.
So continuing after dying doesn't help any with that.
I might have to resort to emulators and save states to practice that part.
In the wee hours in the morning on Thursday 6/16/16, I finally beat Level 2 for the first time! And I got maybe 15% of the way through Level 3 on the first shot at that stage.
It's been about 5 weeks since I first beat Level 1, so progress is terribly slow, but it's happening! I think I have Level 1 just about completely figured out at this point, so now I am trying to get to that same point on Stage 2 while pushing forward as much as possible into Stage 3. Honestly, Stage 2 isn't all that bad except for the few (long) parts in it that just completely wipe me out most of the time. =P
Last night I took down Level 3 for the first time. My first attempt at the fourth and final level went really well. I'm pretty sure I made it at least halfway through Level 4. I will have this beaten soon ... it's only a matter of time!
I am still going strong! I think I am more dedicated to beating this game now then when I started. I can't wait to dive back in and give it another shot already!
Even now, playing through this game is horribly inconsistent. Both the run before and the run after my Level 4 run, I bombed out in Level 1! Sometimes I breeze right through and other times I get caught in a bad spot. I do think it is going to come down to having a run where everything goes right as opposed to just learning the stages and applying what I know is coming ahead.
Thats crazy. Very late congratulations from me too. Fascinating to read this thread. You guys have patience of steel. Not sure if I ever will attempt this.
Ikari Warriors might be the most difficult NES games to beat (without the code).

This and Solomon's Key perhaps.
Maybe Q*Bert should be considered too.
If it weren't for my NES completion blog I wouldn't have bothered trying to clear the game like I did.
I think you listed most of the really tough NES games. A few more I can think of are Arkanoid, Championship Pool (I think this is a best kept secret among top tier difficult NES games), and if you want to take a bit of a leap, the Miracle Piano Teaching System.

People who think that Battletoads is the hardest NES game have no idea. Sure it's much harder than some other NES games that have a reputation for being quite difficult such as the Ninja Gaiden trilogy, Contra and Castlevania, but it's nowhere near something like kari Warriors without the code where it takes many hours just to conquer the first stage.

How random is Ikari Warriors? If you tried again, say today, would you be able to beat it again, after practicing for so many months? Or is it still a lot of luck to it?
Never tried the games you mention. Interesting. I hear Starship Hector really is a tier 1 tough game too. Supposedly its tons tougher than Silver Surfer, who as you might know, often mentioned as one of the hardest NES games.

It took me almost 4 months of consistent playing to beat this game just the one time.
Victory feels good!
Somewhere, some unsung SNK programmer is weeping tears of joy.
Congratulations Arnpoly!
This is no easy feat by any means! Well done!
Wow. How many hours do you think you logged?
Somewhere, some unsung SNK programmer is weeping tears of joy.
According to my handy-dandy spreadsheet, a little over 100 hours.
I very nearly cried myself when I finally beat the game.
Wow! What was your score at the end of your run?
Thankfully, I remembered to capture my final score! 577,600 points!
