Lunar: Sega CD VS PS1

Hello NA

Been putting get this game off for a while now. It is honestly the only RPG i need for my PS1 collection at this point.

But after doing some reading i realized it has games on both the Sega CD and PS1

Could you guys help me choose which system would be the best to play this on for the first time??

Thanks a bunch!

  • PS1 all the way! Its also on PSP!   i didnt know it was on Saturn. Was it JP only?

Ive beat thru it on PS1 & PSP and played about half of the Sega CD version and PS1 is my fave. The Sega CD version feels like a Super Nintendo version compared to PS1 which isnt bad, just feels a little more primitive and seems like the PS1 version is what they intended all along. I did like the PSP version but felt some of the heart was lost in translation. Nice remake but i would definately recommend the PS1 version out of the 3.

Do yourself a favor, get both Lunar 1 & 2 on PS1 along with the Guides, play thru both back to back using the guides and its one of the best RPG experiences you can have! The guides actually show you along the way what was altered or enhanced from the Sega CD version to the PS1 version! Very cool! Best game/guide experience ever!
  • It depends what you want for your first time playing the game. If you want the original you can't go wrong with the sega cd version but it is pretty old school like a snes RPG. The ps1 is much nicer but I prefer the original version of the Lunar games. If you don't care for the original exp. I would recommend the ps1 version.

I believe it may be JP only. I just kept hearing people recommend the saturn version.

Well that makes things easier. I think PS1 is the way to go for me.

Lol thanks brother. These are going on my WTB list. Unfortunately just need money now!

I have a bunch of Megahouse pokemon and digimon figures i was thinking of selling to fund my gaming hobby. Just too expensive to entertain both hobbies. And if i can score 500-600 for the figures i think i am gonna do it lol

Not sure if i can part with my DBZ figures but i have like 600 invested in those as well.

  • Are there any noticeable differences between the two?
  • Its on PSP too

edit: hmm, I wrote that awhile ago and it didn't post until now?  Strange
  • Sega CD version has much better music.

The look of the game got a big overhaul from Sega CD to PS1:

Besides that i can't really remember what all is different cuz its been quite a while since i've gone thru the games but heres a page talking more about the differences:

  • I actually bougth the ps1 version new when i was younger and loved it. I did not get the sega cd version until recently here last few months actually. Id have to say ps1 just for refinement.
  • I only had the PS1 version of Lunar 2 and it was great. Definately glad it was one of the last rpg's I played through. I'd been wanting Lunar 2 since the sega cd days cause of their advertisements. I tried to go back and play the scd version but I couldn't take all the downgrades.

Lunar 1 was also remade for GBA.
  • For nostalgia and various other reasons I personal prefer the Sega CD version. But that doesn't mean its better. The Playstation version is still a great experience. It is cheaper, and you can get the big box full of things and will make it feel like you are getting your moneys worth. The Sega CD versions are more expensive, and if you don't have a Sega CD it's not worth the investment in one.
  • They changed several points in the storyline of the PS1 version for no real reason... other than to make it different?

I prefer the original story and greatly prefer the original's music (all the Sega CD music is recorded in redbook audio so it will play on a CD player and sounds beautiful).

However I believe both are worth owning. For instance the PS1 does have more modern trappings with the battle system and graphics, and has a better intro.

It's hard to beat Lunar 2's intro on Sega CD though, it's beautiful and does things that I thought the Sega CD should not be able to do.

In short, I feel the PS1 and Sega CD versions of Lunar SSS are both worth owning.

I do slightly prefer the Sega CD version because I prefer the original storyline, the high fidelity music, and have nostalgia for that version. You can't go wrong with either of them though. The PSP version is the worst of the three mentioned so far. And stay far far away from the GBA version.

I like the fact that in the remake they kept Luna around a little longer before she's taken. You, as the player, build a stronger connection with her so when the event happens you give a shit.

That's a good point. I never really thought of it that way since I was so used to the way it was before. And I do see a common thread here for people who prefer the Sega CD version so far: Nostalgia. So I guess people who have a choice and don't have nostalgia for the original should lean toward the PS1 version.

Still, I recommend giving the Sega CD soundtrack a listen sometime.
  • Must stop reading this thread to avoid spoilers...
  • If you've never played it, go for the ps1 version. The sega cd version is perfectly fine, but the overhaul is beautifully done, and the cut scenes really add to it.
  • I would say PS1, but that's because it's the only version I've ever played. So yeah, I'm a bit biased. lol

I remember taking a dragonhacker (It's like a gameshark that hooks into the I/O port in the back of older PS1's) and listening to the XA audio on the disc (Sony's proprietary(?) audio format, which was basically a wav file format). Suddenly, the voice actor of the main boss told me that what I was doing was illegal, and that he liked that I was doing it or something of that nature. Blew my freakin' mind. lol

^ What they said.  Pretty new graphics are pointless if the music is sub-par to go with it.  Music > Graphics for me.

  • Would the Psp version be worth it?
