Has anybody died more than Sir Arthur?

This guy's been killed so often he's probably got a room on permanent reserve in hell.

As a kid Ghosts 'n Goblins kicked my ass so bad I actually gave it away.

I just picked up Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and I game overed on the first level.

On the hard to easy scale--10 being Wolverine's bones and 1 being your sister--how do you rate each of these games?

  • Lol it pissed you off didn't it?
  • Well, I'd give Ghosts 'n Goblins a solid 3, Ghouls 'n Ghosts a solid 2 and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts gets the 1.

They can barely be called challenging.
  • Hahah Probably Ryu from ninja gaiden, any of the battletoads, and the silver surfer. Those fuckers go down more than all the playboy bunnies combined.

It's funny, i just took a crack at this game today on my MAME cab. Couldn't beat the first level.........

IDK if it was the controls using a joystick, or just that i am awful and the game is brutally difficult.

    Haha, that's delicious, dude.

I myself love playing these games but suck at them so bad that I'd have to give them all a straight eight.

^ Are you being serious? Good for you if you actually have the skill level to classify these as barely challenging. I have some serious practice before i can ever say that.

Out of curiosity what do you find challenging? These are known for being at the top of the difficulty chart, if you find these easy, you must not find many games challenging.

    To beat:

    Ghosts n Goblins - 7/10

    Super Ghouls n Ghost - 8/10

    1CC

    Ghosts n Goblins - 8.5/10

    Super Ghouls n Ghosts - 10/10

I can beat both and nearly 1CC'd Ghost n Goblins the one time I gave it a real effort.  There are many, many, many SNES and NES games I can't even get close to beating.

The first Ikari Warriors on the NES is far, far more difficult than those. I am yet to no death it.

Mutant Virus is also far more challenging. It drove me insane, but I managed to beat it.

Those take more than a week for one to actually beat without using continues. Not the case with the Makaimura series.

Also, I find Megaman games to be more challenging than those, but mostly because I suck at Megaman.

Check the Lunar Pool scoreboard and then read her comments about it being the simplist thing in the world to memorize and harness 600 straight shots where any variation undoes it all

Not memorize. Memorizing does not make for a scientific effort.

I noted the data down so it could be repeated and confirmed like any good mathematic study.

  • For me Ghosts n Goblins is one of the hardest NES games, and that is also because it's clunky with control issues and cheap hits. I can 1cc Battletoads and all the Ninja Gaiden games, and I've never made it past level 3 of Ghosts n Goblins. Even making it past level 2 is a challenge. But I also think that other difficult NES games are more fun than GNG, so I've put much more time into them.

I have completed Ghouls n Ghosts on the Genesis and Super Ghouls n Ghosts on the SNES. I consider them better games than Ghosts n Goblins and not as frustrating.

You'd have to memorize the pixel to place each shot since the game doesn't provide coordinates.  Therefore, memorization

It has unlimited continues though.  I guarantee with a small amount of coaching anyone could beat level 3 with a dozen efforts

Not really lol I don't take part in any of the contests (yet) and have never seen her discuss her gaming prowess before.

Pretty nuts though she is that good. Gives me motivation though to actually start beating some of these tougher games.

Angle measurement tools and also input counting.

The angle in the game is stored in a byte, so there are only 256 possible angles instead of the full 360, and each tap up or down moves the angle by 1 point.

Also, if you do 600 shots, you won't be doing a perfect run.

Mine took exactly 348 shots to complete.

Haha well according to the NA dick size poll, you and the rest of NA has one for him.

  • Mario has obviously died more. Most popular games that so many people suck at.

Maybe. I might give Ghosts n Goblins another go at some point. It's not one of my favorite NES games. If it was as fun as Battletoads I'd have 1cc'd it by now.

  • My vote goes to Kuros. What a damn pansy. Which just makes me kill him on purpose.

Or Luke Skywalker.  Seriously, f games where shit is just constantly dive-bombing your face.
  • I always love threads like this. I am definitely not a very skilled gamer (RPGs don't really hone your twitch reflexes), but I enjoy reading these threads. It's always incredible to me how someone can think one game is a cakewalk while others find it impossible.

So like, 5 straight hours of measuring and the game is beat.  After 40 hours getting the notes finalized

edit: Wait, that comment was meant for Bea.  Although its a strangely fitting mis-quote...

  • It took the Mexican Runner 7 hours to beat Lunar Pool. The man has amazing patience.

  • Actually, I spent hours on Lunar Pool, but didn't come close to beating it. I spent a lot of time experimenting just trying to figure out how to get perfect runs on various stages.

When you consider how many popular games Mario has starred in, this is the right answer.

Donkey Kong alone must have resulted in over a billion deaths for poor Mario.

Yep, something like that. Several hours were spent mapping and calculating each shot on each stage.

Weren't for my love of mathematics, I would have given up that method on the second day.

Lunar Pool is just too damn long for it's own good. Ain't no woman likes something that long.

  • If it takes Mexican Runner 7 hours to beat a game, then that would take a normal human like 100 hours.

It took him almost 90 hours to beat Might and Magic. Anyone who wants a long ass NES game should try that one.

  • Let's take the question on its face - has anyone died more than Sir Arthur?

For that, let's consider some factors. We'll need to consider the number of times a game has been played in which a character appears (roughly estimated by the number of times each of the games the character appears in has been purchased multiplied by some factor of replayability per), the difficulty of the game, the time delta between deaths, etc.

Immediately, Mario (as stated above) has to be candidate one. Sheer number of deaths must be astronomical. The primary Mario franchise games alone have moved in the neighborhood of 200 million units. They also have a fairly high replay value. Lower difficulty and delta scores weigh Mario down, though, as well as the notion that he only tends to die in his platformer appearances.

The flip side of this would be something like Meat Boy, where its numbers are somewhere over 500 thousand, but dying is practically integral to the gameplay, and each level can involve scores of deaths before completing. Moreover, the delta score is virtually zero, as players are expected to go through a trial and error phase.

In this scenario, the death-per-minute score for Meat Boy has to be roughly 400 times that of Mario's.

I might be missing some factors here, but there's good material here if you want to do the research and estimate who truly stares into the abyss.
