  • I actually have gotten used to looking at the label of the cart when I use my top loader. Not that I am looking at it while I am playing but between levels or if I pause it real quick it's nice to come back and see the label art that is usually hidden.

I'll never get used to it. It sticks out as super-awkward since we know it's 2x as tall as the Famicom AV/toploader design was proportioned for. Sure, they gave the top a little hump to hide another fraction of an inch in the NES version that didn't need to fit the FDS adapter on the flat part, but it's much too little a difference to matter.

I understand what you mean because it is so tall compared to other systems but it's still better than this tower of power lol.

    LOL! Yeah. Definitely.

Careful: that setup can easily snap a game pak's edge connector! I lost a couple copies of Killer Instinct in my SNES X-BAND and my friend broke Super Mario 64 and Cruis'n USA in an open top N64 (may as well have been a GameShark). Someone needs to make a bulky pin adapter more reminiscent of the SEGA 32X.

Yeah I really don't use that setup anymore I just use it for famicom and the front or top loader for the nes games.
  • I love the large NES cartridges and looking at the labels when I have them in hand, but yeah, having them in a toploader is a bit weird. They're the size they are so they could work easily in a front loader, and I like how the AVS kind of mimics that.

    I cannot argue with that...

I can say however, that while some CRTs support S-Video, fewer support Component, and RGB is extremely rare. Though component did make some headway with high end CRT sets shortly before the HD era, it was equally as obscure to RGB back in the day when these consoles were popular. Out of our three CRTs, the best and nicest of the three displays is RF only. It is currently stored in the garage atm but I plan on making it the center of my retro gaming rig when I get a place of my own. It's got a nice woodgrain boxy shape with a flat top that will easily support a 1080p monitor perched on top for HD game systems.

And composite does look good on old CRTs; even RF is acceptable if you use high quality straight connect cables and modulators (no daisy-chaining of a half dozen auto switches or crusty Atari style manual boxes). The RF difference in quality is only slightly inferior to composite when done right, but the picture quality can be nasty if not handled properly between console and TV.

I disagree. The AV Famicom is a thing of beauty, converter stack or not. Still not bad compared to a Sega Genesis with a CD, 32X, Game Genie, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic 2 or 3 piggybacked on top!

It is a well built machine and one of the best nes/famicom systems you can get without needing to mod.
  • ^^Mine already has D3 and D4 wired to the Player 2 controller port, as well as a bright Power LED mod under the switch.

Yeah that is an old pic I added the led mod but I have not connected controller 2 for the zapper.  Considered making this a NESRGB or high def nes but it's just really nice the way it is.
  • A CRT with component and S-video can easily be found for free to 25 bucks on Craiglist. RGB Monitors not so much though... but component is pretty much indistinguishable from RGB imo. Hell S-Video pretty much is too.
  • Okay so I'm a composite video junky. So sue me. Most gamers grew up with RF only...
  • If the Analogue Nt Mini was release say next month it might be worth the extra at 1080p.

I'm a american living in the UK and can't find anywhere here to even buy the AVS. The Analogue Nt Mini seems more worldwide shipping friendly the Retrousb avs model. imho RetroUSB don't seem to care about anyone else other then US sales?

I'm thinking about just waiting 3 months for the Analogue Nt Mini instead.
  • You can't order directly from RetroUSB.com? Plenty of people overseas have successfully ordered it.

Of course you can order, ,but it cost 88$ more for delivery and that doesn't inclued custom chargers that's becoming near Analogue nt mini costs.

    This is off there website

International shipping is USPS. You will receive a shipping number when your order ships. Unless you choose the Express Mail option, this number IS NOT TRACKABLE. Check the USPS site for estimated shipping times to your area. Your country's customs can delay delivery for many weeks.

You are responsible for all import taxes and customs fees. Customs forms will not be forged, the exact value will be declared, and nothing will be marked as a gift.

Current period between order and international shipment is 1-10 business days. This is an estimate, not a guarantee

I'm sure it'll be fine, but they should try to help all International buyers  Maybe they should put down package as gift to help with cost.   Nothing trackable unless you spend nearly $100 for delivery.  This might drive some away.  It's making me think twice.  Don't know who to buy now?

  • So you'd rather pay $450+smaller shipping fee than pay $185+$88 for shipping?

The price and lack of tracking, or expensive tracking caused by USPS, its not retroUSBs choice. Its also illegal to forge custom forums. You and me might not get bothered, but a company shipping 100s of packages can't ship them all off as gifts.

    You forgot custom charge also.

I uderstand they can't put gift under all packages.  Maybe they should have a UK distro for all of europe.  That would help  If I order a AVS tomorrow it could be months before I even get it.  That's happened to me before ordering from the US or Japan

"They" is pretty much one dude operating out of his home. While he probably could arrange something, you have to understand how small RetroUSB is.

And a guy from Sweden said his was clearing customs after a couple of days.

Sweden must be wonderful for customs because the UK is very strict with custom duty tax.  There brutal here.  Maybe for good reason wit what's going on in the mid-east.

I'm going to have a think on what to do.  Sorry if I casued any issues

Not a problem, just that RetroUSB is pretty much Bunnyboy (with help from friends and vendors.) It's not like he has offices across the globe, though that would be nice if he became that successful.

Is the customs charge less than $185?

I'm sure. I think Brazil is the only place in the world that tax 100% or more on customs...

I've ordered many things from overseas and almost never paid customs, but the United States have it's own problem placing priority on imports over American made, tax incentives for manufacturers to leave the country or outsource production, and for some bizarre reason I can order stuff from China with free shipping for less than the cost to ship a single padded mailer across the states.

Point I am making is the United States is hemmoraging money to support imports. Other world governments (such as the U.K.) charge customs fees to discourage such practice. If RetroUSB used an importer to distribute consoles in foreign countries, the importer would still have to pay customs fees, and those fees would be passed down to you either way.

Shipping overseas from US to abroad sucks, and like Mog says, Brian's hands are tied. You can ship untracked which is usually much cheaper, but it's up to you if you take that risk. 98% chance the package arrives safely without a tracking slip.
  • Anyone that owns a AVS console tell me how the Input lag is? Is there any?
  • For other euros: video game consoles from US do not have import fees, just VAT (TARIC code 9504500000). It says it uses USB for power, so no expensive converter bricks needed.

    At UK 20% VAT: (185+88)*1.2 = 327.6$

    You mean output lag?

"Input lag" is a measurement of the latency added by the display device.

    [edit]

Unless you're not talking about lag in the video at all. I'm pretty sure the AVS reads controller input as fast as an original console.

Is there any notiable lag when playing games?  The Analogue nt mini says there console will be lag free.

The AVS is also "lag free". The lag is going to be determined by the lag your TV adds and not the game system in either case; the mini or the AVS.
