Revisiting the Retro Spiderman Games

I've found spiderman on the nes, max carnage on the genesis and spiderman on the snes/genesis/arcade to be all decent games after playing them for extended periods of time.

I've always unfairly judged seperation anxiety, arcane's revenge and web of fire as bad/medicore including spiderman gb, and atari 2600 when infact they might be decent games with enough practice. To be honest i gave up pretty quicky playing em.

Do you think any spiderman games are unfairly judged or underrated?

  • IMO if you've played Maximum Carnage on Genesis and Spider-Man 2 on XBox, you're good. I did briefly play Spider-Man on NES and the one with Mysterio on the Game Boy. I also played Spider-Man 3 for PS3. They were okay but didn't bring anything new to the table. That new Spider-Man game that was teased at e3 tho....
  • Ultimate Spider-Man for PS2 is actually really good. Also has that cell shaded, comicy, feel to it (which I like). Even if you aren't really a fan of that particular art style, the game plays really well.
  • Oh i forget to mention some other underrated titles:

Spiderman n64 and lethal foes (super famicom) seem pretty good

Spiderman and Captain America in Dr. Doom's Revenge: Commodore 64

    Spiderman Amiga:

  • My favorite is Spider-Man on the PS1 (the one Neversoft worked on). I played quite a bit of the original NES Spider-Man (almost beat it!) and Maximum Carnage on the Sega. I remember thinking that red cart was pretty cool as a kid!

Oh, and I almost forgot "Spider_Man" on Sega Genesis. Not a bad game. Not really sure if any of these were unfairly judged though...I never paid too much attention to the reviews on them.

I've never played the Genesis version, but I thought Maximum Carnage on the SNES was a great Spider-man-themed beat-em-up.

I don't recall if it used the extra buttons that SNES gives you vs Genesis to consider whether it would be a definitively better version of the game.

  • They all suck imo.  Even Maximum Carnage has to be a bottom 5 brawler on SNES

War of the Gems is good though
  • I always had a liking for Spider-Man Vs Kingpin on SegaCD
  • I quite like Maximum Carnage. It's not breaking new ground or anything but for a beat em up it has all you really need. The Punching sound is satisfying and the music is great.

I also like Arcades Revenge, again not breaking new ground but it controls well enough and the heroes all have the powers that you associate with them. Hard as balls though with no continues.
  • I liked Maximum Carnage but it wasn't great, the PS1 Spider-Man was alright, and Spider-Man 2 on PS2/Xbox was the best one I've played to date. From what I've seen on YT vids, Spider-Man Web of Shadows looks pretty good although I've never played it. Spider-Man 3 doesn't look too bad either but I guess it gets crapped on because of the movie reception.
  • I like Arcade's Revenge. For starters, the music (at least on the SNES) is so ridiculously good that I'd probably be willing to forgive the game's flaws anyway.

But other than the criminal lack of continues/passwords -- and the 1UP trick in Gambit's stage is an easy workaround for that -- I think it's a decent little game with some good ideas and some questionable ones.

It controls quite well too (again, at least on the SNES: the Genesis version isn't nearly as smooth). The second Wolverine stage is a tedious drag, but both of the Gambit stages are pretty fun.
  • Maximum Carnage...

    You're all crazy!

  • Arcade's Revenge I use to play a lot if that counts since it is a cross-over.....

I always enjoyed Spiderman Vs Kingpin as well in Genesis.
  • I really liked Spiderman 2, even though the generic missions/crime fighting got annoyingly repetitive.
  • I want to really like Spider-Man NES, but the wonky controls kind of ruin it for me.

    Couple of reasons -

    1. Censorship. The game was uncensored on the Genesis.

    2. The game doesn't look that great for an SNES title, but for a Genesis title, it looks pretty damn good.

    3. Seems to run a bit smoother.

    4. The rock tunes lend themselves well to FM sound.

What censorship was in the game?  Just toning down blood?

I don't see that as ruining the experience of a comic-book-themed beat-em-up during a time when Spiderman was the go-to afternoon cartoon...

Maybe it would have been a disappointment to more avid fans of the comics, if they were grittier, but it was already grittier than the cartoon most kids were familiar with at the time.

Little things here and there, references to religion, such as the rumble in the church is turned into a rumble in the ... generic room with a stained glass window. There was no blood in the Genesis version, and the differences are small enough that if the SNES had 2-player support, would tip the scales in its favor.

I suspect the enemy balance and quantity would have made 2-player support tough to pull off once the game was properly balanced for single player with a maximum amount of stuff going on at once.

Agreed. This game begged for a 2-player mode though. Seperation Anxiety offered 2-players at once, but just wasn't quite as good overall.

  • Guys maximum carnage had a limited edition version that came in this big box with a comic and something else. I would love to have one of those, wonder how much they are going for.

    Found it. Thanks.

I miss the era when spiderman wasn't tarnished by the superhero movie & merchandising era we're in. So many people think that the 90s spiderman comics were all style and no substance but love all those early McFarlane issues and the cartoon series, they still hold up well in my opinion.

No problem man, I have one of those sets. The book is well put together.

I know what you mean. I watched that cartoon series along with the X-Men animated series growing up. Awesome time to be a kid.
  • I don't want to alarm you but you may or may not have used the term "Retro" correctly. Don't quote me on this but I believe the term you are looking for is Vintage-Themed-Retrofluenced-Spidey-tastic Games. Run that by CZroe, arch_8ngel or quest4nes for official conformation!

Oh man, I clicked on this thread just to see if anyone chimed in about the title.

    Bravo Good Sir.

    Haha nice one

  • Do you guys remember those badass marvel t-shirts, especially the spiderman and punisher ones, you could order from comic book ads? Circa 1994? They don't make quality like that anymore. Those were badass, wonder if they had shirts for some of these spidey games
  • I've only played (and beaten) Return of the Sinister Six on NES but it's average at best.

I know. But i love the cover art. I love the old early 90s spiderman comic style. I'd love to have the nes art on a poster
