Thinking about getting a Dreamcast

I'm thinking about getting a Dreamcast. I found one on Amazon for $38.

Should I go for it? And what games are worth getting for the Dreamcast?

  • Crazy taxi and Soul Calibur are two major staples that everyone should have. Shenmue is an acquired taste, definitely not for everyone. Illbleed is fantastic, cheesy horror with some interesting mechanics. Worms Armageddon is great but there's other platforms to get that on, still worth getting I think. Lots of Shooters I hear good things about like Mars matrix. There are lots of games worth playing
  • My take on the DC... definitely a cool system worth collecting for but in my case I wanted for years, finally bought one earlier this year, bought about 7 or 8 games for it and then played it for a week, then sold it. The DC, to me personally, is not worth it with nearly every quality game having a port or superior sequel on consoles I already own. This may not be the case for you so use your judgement. That said, I still think it's a cool system with a decent amount of good games. Plus it's not ridiculously expensive yet which is always a good thing.
  • It's still cheap enough that you can snag one and a few games to see if you like it, and if you don't you can unload it pretty easily.
  • Don't think about it. Just do it.
  • I love the DC but I love fighters and arcade style sport games and the occasional racer. It also has very strong retail quality unlicensed support now in the shooter genre. Get Skies of Arcadia for the Gamecube instead, and Grandia 2 can be played on the PS2 but it is a poor port. That is about it for RPGs. If yu want to get a full set be prepared to drop some big cash though, it has really spiked this last year or so for some titles.

Really a great system with some cool ideas but it sits at a weird junction between gens, to me. Funky controllers, funky VMU with limited memory space, but really great hardware capabilities and sweet VGA out.
  • Good system but came out about 2 years too early. As mentioned by KrakenSoup "nearly every quality game having a port or superior sequel on consoles I already own". For me there's maybe 25 games or less worth owning for DC. Don't let that discourage you if you're seriously interested though. Go for it if that's your thing and it makes you happy.
  • Currently one of my favorite podcasts is doing a 'summer of dreamcast' they are talking aalllllll about the dreamcast.

i would say for that price go for it! It is a really cool system. maybe listen to some of the episodes to get stoked!

X2!! D-Ballz always with the wisdom!

    Cheaper good titles:
    Dynamite Cop,
    Zombie Revenge,
    Super Magnetic Neo,
    Elemental Gimmick Gear,
    Wetrix
  • It's a cool system to own, but honestly if you just spent some time in the wild I'm sure you can get it a lot cheaper. Like mentioned before a lot of the multi-port titles have superior ports on later gen systems. However it has a bevy of exclusives. One of those being Chu Chu Rocket. One of the best party games along side of Mario Party and Saturn Bomberman.
  • Depends on what kind of games you like. I would pick one up if you're interested in it. They're pretty inexpensive, so really no big loss. I bought one just to play Virtua Fighter
  • One of the better homebrew scenes too, particularly if you're into scrolling shooters.
  • If the price is right, I say go for it. There are plenty of awesome games for that machine. I personally really enjoy Soul Calibur most.
  • Do it. The Dreamcast is a great system with some fantastic games. Sure, most of them have ports on other systems, but as a whole, the DC library contains a plethora of terrific 2d fighters and shooters. That, and it can play burnt CD-R's of games without needing any modification. DC games aren't super expensive(save for a few), so it's still worth it to buy them in the wild. I highly recommend Power Stone 2 and Star Wars Demolition. Those were two of my favorite DC games back in the day. The DC port of Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer was really good, too.

Overall, just a fantastic assortment of fighting games to choose from. Get yourself a Mad Catz Dream Pad(6 face button controller) and throw down!

A lot of people have given good advice on whether or not you should start collecting for the DC, but no one has mentioned the deal you found online.  I would recommend getting a DC, but for $38, it better include shipping along with all cables and either two controllers or one controller and a VMU.  Otherwise, that seems high to me.  I've owned multiple Dreamcasts, and I don't think I've never paid more than $25 for one with everything I mentioned.  Maybe the prices have gone up in the past year, but I would shop around a little more before pulling the trigger.

Speaking of price, I bought my Dreamcast new(around $200) less than a few months before Sega slashed the price. They were going for $60 new the end of that same year. >.<

EGG and Dynamite are getting up there!

  • Get a Dreamcast, it's one of the best systems ever made and it's still affordable.

There are tons of exclusives and also adapters to use other controllers since the stock D-Pad is butt.

    Personal favorites:

    Dynamite Cop

    Tokyo Xtreme Racer

    Soul Calibur

    Crazy Taxi

    Bangai O

    EGG

    Illbleed

    Carrier

    Blue Stinger

    Cannon Spike

    Sega Rally

EDIT: I can't think of more than a couple games that had superior ports on other systems.
  • There's a lot of great games that are exclusive to the Dreamcast. Whenever a large number of Dreamcast games shows up locally, there's all kinds of strange titles I've never heard of that end up being pretty good.

Where else can you play oddities but goodies like Death Crimson OX and Dragon Riders: Chronicles of Pern?

And then there's games that were only also on PC, like Typing of the Dead and Omikron: The Nomad Soul.

Sometimes when a port does exist, it's not as good as it was on Dreamcast like with Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Grandia 2, and arguably Pier Solar and Evolution 1+2.

Where's the localized ports for Sword of the Berzerk? Mars Matrix? Project Justice? GigaWing 2? Jet Set Radio? Record of Lodoss War? Shenmue? There's tons of great exclusives for this system and you'll keep discovering more--

Case in Point: When you guesstimate you'll only like X amount of games for a system, after exploring the library, you'll probably end up doubling or tripling that number.

If you are into fighting games at all, Dreamcast is a must-own.

If you are into SHMUPs at all, Dreamcast is a must-own.

If you are into RPGs or Horror Games, Dreamcast makes several very strong must-own arguments.

Yeah, it's a great system to have, and it's reliable too.
  • Am I the only one who liked Record of Lodoss war? Yeah its a Diablo clone but I thought it was pretty good, but I am also a fan of the Anime/TV series too.

Well shit, cirellio already mentioned it. Speed read fail FTW!

  • D2

    Jojos bizarre adventure

    Blue stinger
  • Somebody mentioned earlier Dreamcast homebrew scene. It is very good and growing quite rapidly. . I'm probably wrong on this and not saying it has the most hombrew games , but currently seems like the most active with release's

  • The Dreamcast is like no other.

    It's so much fun.

Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive, CDRs, Homebrew.

    It's a blast.

x2. If the system has a game with "Virtua" in the title, there's a good reason to own the system. Yes, even Tennis.
