They are quite good, funny games. Be prepared though, text command graphic adventures can be difficult when trying to figure out what to do next. Also, the system might not recognize certain ways to say something, so try different ways and keep language simple.
I used to play the original on a BBC Micro way back when, so have a nostalgic soft spot for it. Not sure if they would grip someone coming in fresh at them though. Khan Games port for the NES is really nicely done.
Yeah big fan of them and Al Lowe (creator). I know I beat the first 4 on DOS and spent way too much time playing the 1st one as a kid. If you are a collector, I believe the original inspiration was from "Softporn Adventure", a text game made by Sierra. It's crazy rare and a 4 figure game though...

kinda funny how many pornographic games are expensive nowadays
Played the first one a lot as a kid. It was the only game we had on our computer in the mid 90's. Extremely fond of the series. Completely worth it to play 1,2,3,5,6,

What? No 4?
Played em all and 6 is the last good one. My personal favorite is 2 but 1-3 are all exceptional. The command entry style play of the originals may seem archaic these days but I prefer it to the point and click "remasters" and later games.
Definitely check out KHAN Games' port of Larry for the NES. So good!
I played the first one on DOS as a kid... probably way too young. Not sure how they'd hold up today! I always liked the theme song
Fun story- the art director for LSL is Bil Skirvin. His brother is a professor in the crop sciences department at UIUC. I had an elective class with him as an undergrad and he mentioned it.

Yeah, the original run of DOS games are excellent, with 1-3 being the higher end, in my opinion. I picked them up on sale at GoG a couple of years back and I'm fairly certain that they're still available there. If you're going for the actual boxed floppy versions, they've risen in price over the last few years as all retro games have, so be prepared to likely pay a premium (and probably end up with an incomplete LSL1, as most folks discarded or used then discarded the included cocktail napkin).

That was a great read. I had always heard that AL Lowe said there would never be a 4th Larry but I didn't realize they had intended for an online game. How visionary!
I spent all day checking out that site. Good stuff!
I love Larry six, Shape up or Slip out. Is that the subtitle? I forgot. But that is probably my favorite adventure for the PC after the Quest for Glory series. I love the humor and the environment that screams 90s sleaze. This is VGA graphics at its best (oohhh yes!!!). I don't know exactly why, but returning to this game every few years really scratches an itch.
I like them all. For a new player 1, 2, 3 can be pretty annoying though, since you can end up in unwinnable situations without knowing it. 5, 6, 7 don't have that problem, so you might want to start with those. You can still die in the usual Sierra style, though, so remember to save early and often.

I don't recall how, but I do remember my brother and I getting into an unwinnable scenario in 6 way back when it was new. We were probably 2/3 or better through the game and had forgotten to do something before getting past one of the ladies (maybe the "spa?") and ended up having to reset the whole thing. Granted, this was in late '93 or early '94, so it's possible that somebody eventually figured a way around our issue, but BBSs of the time and FIDONet threads all confirmed that we'd dead ended and had to restart.
Big fan of the first 3 Larry games. The sequels 5,6 and so on, I'm not sure if it was the improved graphics or the addition of the mouse (no typing), but it just didn't have the same feel, and therefore I (personally) didn't enjoy them as much.
Heck, all those Sierra games (Kings Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, etc) were the cat's ass back in the late 80's, early 90's. Many fond memories.

Amen. I'd played so many of the text entry games that it seemed wholly unnatural to go clicking around the screen with various command icons, trying to figure out what you could do. I (alongside my brother in a couple of cases) made it through the latter games but didn't have nearly as much fun figuring everything out. Maybe it was the improvement in graphical quality as well, as the humor in the earlier games seemed much more subtle and tongue in cheek whereas the laughs in the later games were much more cartoonish and/or crude. Not that it's not all sexual/bathroom humor, but to me, at least, there was a difference between the 1-3 and 5-7.

Sounds like it may have been a bug. I don't think there are any "intentionally" unwinnable situations starting from 5 (somebody can correct me if I'm wrong). I actually did encounter one bug in LSL6 myself only recently. I can't remember the details and I have no idea what triggered it, but it had something to do with Art's tram not stopping when it was supposed to. Always annoying to hit a bug.
