Gamecube Vs Playstation. (Resident Evil)

Anyone here that have played Resident Evil (0-4/Code Veronica X) on both consoles? I'm curious to hear about the difference.

Comments

  • Yes, assuming you mean the Gamecube and the PS1/PS2.

Resident Evil 0 was only the GC (not the PS2).

For Resident Evil 1, get it on the GC. The upgrades are so worth it.

Resident Evil 2, 3, and Code:Veronica X are pretty much identical from what I can remember.

Resident Evil 4 has some differences, but the PS2 has edges it out in my opinion. The extras (Ashley's knight costume and Ada's side mission). I prefer the GC version just because it was first and it's what I remember playing the game the most on.
  • I already own all the titles on the different Playstation consoles, including the remake (0+1) for PS4. I've been looking into picking up a Gamecube, and I'm curious if it would be worth getting the Resident Evil games for it. I'm mostly curious about the difference between Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Code Veronica X.
  • I think if you got them on the different Playstation consoles, you should be good. However, if you want to use one console for all of those games, then get the GC versions.

    It's up to you.

Get the Dreamcast versions.  You can play them in semi-hd via the VGA out and you can use the VMU for health status notifications.  They are ports of the PC versions that supposedly look great via VGA.  Not sure what type of resoultion you would get on the GC ports, prob not as good especially if you don't have the super pricey Nintendo GC component cables.

That was the reason I wanted them on the Gamecube, would be really awesome to have them all on one console. If the difference is that minor, I don't know if I'm willing to spend that much on a game I already own.

  • Dreamcast versions are the bomb!  IMHO

I was interested in getting a Gamecube for Zelda, Resident Evil and the rare gems. I haven't even considered a Dreamcast, my brother had one a long time ago but it never really grew on me.

  • Well, the Wii version honestly might be the best. I mean, it's really hard to compare RE games, since there's countless versions on countless consoles. RE1+2, RE4, and Code Veronica are just on too many consoles and some have additions or changes. I prefer PS1 personally, but best for graphics is going to be the newer console, so if it was also on GC or Wii, then those win. RE4 on the other hand, some say Wii for that, but I prefer PS2.
  • Dreamcast is the bomb.  You should get one.  Resident Evil Code Veronica was originally released for the Dreamcast.  Plus the VMU screen is great for knowing how much ammo and health you have in real time without switching to the inventory screen.
  • I have to go with the PS versions as the GC controller makes it pretty much impossible to play RE games for me.

I thought the GC versions all had re-worked controls so you could ACTUALLY AIM, though.

But for me, that doesn't matter.  The button layout of the GC controller for A, B, X and Y is so jacked up, I have trouble using it for anything outside of button mashing.  It was also one of my biggest complaints for The Twin Snakes.

  • The Gamecube versions of 2,3 and CV are basically the same as the PS1 and PS2 versions. RE4 is the best on GC and the remake of RE and RE0 are only on GC (unless you count the recent rereleases on PS4). Personally I like having all the RE games on one console (anything after 4 doesn't matter to me   ) and I strongly prefer the GC controller over the PS1/2 controllers. But the downside is the GC versions are generally more expensive than the PS versions, especially CV.

Totally agree I loved playing RE2, CV, and RE3 on the dreamcast.  I think the graphics were a little cleaner and the vmu health and ammo was so nice to have.

Yes and the PC versions, which the DC versions are ports of, have additional content although I am not an expert on exactly what content that is.

  • The gamecube versions of 2,3,X are worth it. They run at a smooth framerate and look better then their dreamcast counter parts, they would look even better if you had the gamecube component cables.
  • Gamecube (100$ - Denmark)

    Component Cable (180-200$ - Ebay)

    Resident Evil 0 (30$+)

    Resident Evil (25$+)

    Resident Evil 2 (40$+)

    Resident Evil 3 (40$+)

    Resident Evil 4 (25$+)

Resident Evil Code Veronica X (50$+)

The game prices are taken from Ebay, I prefer to buy copies that are in decent conditions and have everything included. All of the games are 40$+ in Denmark with Veronica X sitting on 80$ and Resident Evil 2 on 65$.

That's pretty expensive for wanting to play games that I already own, throw in the prices for most Zelda games and it gets rather expensive.
  • Dreamcast versions all the way. Lots of people tend to forget they even exist. haha

I think the N64 version of REII had an option to change out of the tank controls, and the only difference I seen on the code veronica is that the DC version has Steve Burnside's hair parted differently. I'm sure there's much bigger differences, but for some odd reason, that stuck out for me the most. lol
  • Yeah i guess they are pricey now but i bought my RE set back in 2006 so i may not be up to date on pricing, the gamecube component cables are insane but they are quality.

If you're going for picture quality, get the GC versions, and play them through a GC-compatible Wii using component cables. Or on a GC with the component cable if you have it.

  • Best version of RE 0 and 1 is definitely the PS4 remastered combo pack of both games. 2, 3, and Code Veronica X are almost the same so it doesn't matter. I'm pretty sure they're remastering 2 from the ground up in the near future. Best version of 4 is the PS4 remaster that's coming out in 4 days (August 30th) plus it's the best game in the series IMO. RE 4 was originally developed for GC and against the wishes of the devs it was put out on PS2 a short time later (probably to bring in more money).

There's also the RE 6 Anthology which came out last generation and included all the main games from 1-6, although many were digital download only vouchers.
  • As far as RE4 , dont listen to these people. Wii is where its at. Gc snd ps2 is third person red dot laser weird and frustrating.  For a quick decision game its nerve racking. The wii setup with nunchuk and aiming for shooting is awesome. Favorite wii game by far.

it doesnt matter how you play the rest. Just play 4 on the wii
  • Seconding Wii for RE4. I played it on a PS2, GC, and Wii, and the Wii version is the best hands down. Real aiming improves my enjoyment of the game 300% vs pad aiming.
  • Gamecube. At least for REmake

REmake is easily the best in the entire series IMO. The atmosphere, graphics, difficulty, and just overall playability are perfect to me.

2 and 3 you can't really go wrong on any system. I played them on PS1 my whole life and never had any issues. From what i hear the gamecube ports are slightly better, but also more expensive.

Keep in mind the DC versions let you use the VMU for a health status, which is insanely convenient. Rather than pausing the game just to see how many hits more you can take.
  • I don't know how anyone can say that the GC version of the REmake is better than the PS4 remaster. I also don't understand how anyone could say that the Wii version of RE4 is better than the PS4 remaster unless you think that somehow Wii looks/sounds better than PS4. Resident Evil remake, Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil 4...all 3 of them are available on PS4 with the best sound and graphics to date of any console (starting 8/30 for RE4). The rest are all open for debate. I understand the thread is asking for GC vs PS and since PS4 is part of the PS family, that's my stance.
  • I wasn't aware they were all available on PS4 until this thread.

  • Personally the first three Resident Evils I feel look and play best on the PlayStation. If you're going for Code Veronica the Dreamcast version is ALOT easier than the PS2 port, but the PS2 version has more content. Resident Evil 4 I have to hand that down to the PS2 as well for the additional content. And for REmake and Resident Evil 0, both the Gamecube and Wii ports are fine. But I did notice the Wii versions for some reason appear to be lighter in color for whatever reason. And both will play with a Gamecube controller so there's no need for having to use that god awful Wiimote.
