Turtles in Time is my favorite. And I actually like the levels and enemies in the SNES version better. Really the only downsides to the SNES port for me are the music change and the fact that it's only 2 player.
(could a hack be made that allowed 4 player via multi-tap?)
I've never heard of anyone preferring the console over the arcade I'm def checking back on this often.
Let's reiterate... Bionic Commando.
I don't know that the American release of the arcade machine was widespread, but give it try on MAME and it is pretty much a tech demo of the NES game with far fewer levels and shitty level design.
The NES game is 1000x better.
(and while 4-player-TMNT in the arcade was AWESOME, if you were ok with only 2P, then you got an entire extra level and boss on the NES version)
I think, in general, beat-em-ups that were ported to SNES, and newer, tend to be better on consoles because they often improve the level designs and shift the game focus from being a "quarter eater" to being something that is intended to beaten with skill
(whereas the arcade versions can seemingly have bosses that 1-hit-kill you, unstoppably -- think of the Red Dragon in the AD&D arcade games, for instance)
Contra is my favorite adaptation. There are plenty of straight arcade to console ports that are basically identical like Ikaruga, beatmania IIDX, OutRun 2 but I can't say I *prefer* the console version.
Put a vote in for Marble Madness. As important as that arcade cabinet was ( first System 1 cab IIRC - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_System ) the NES port is so nice.

I can nominate the worst. Alien vs Predator on SNES vs Arcade. Its not quite the same but both beat em ups. SNES is horrible looking and arcade is bad ass.
Aww come on, that can't be the worst. I happen to think Final Fight is a horrendous port on SNES as well, but for some reason people stick up for it. It's not really a bad game in a vacuum but it's a terrible port compared to the arcade version. They couldn't even make it 2 player FFS.

I think people stick up for it is because a lot of us probably played it without having seen the arcade game, and on its own, it's quite fun.
I think the distribution of a lot of these arcade games was very regional, since it wasn't like I wasn't playing games in arcades at that time.

Congo Bongo on the VIC-20 is a nightmare, although I'm sure someone can come up with something even worse.
I'm with you Arch, Bionic Comando is a really great game. I play through it a couple times a year..... and i still forget which communicators go with which levels all the time

I always liked TMNT IV on the SNES better than the arcade version. What ports do you prefer over the arcade?
I love TMNT IV on SNES but you can only have 2 players

This is precisely what I wanted to say
Also turtles in time arcade way beats out the snes but not having to dump quarters into a cabinet would make sense

I'm too used to playing with an SNES controller as opposed to the arcade controls, so I am a bit biased.
Oh, and I said "an SNES" so you all have to say it the way I do!

Sorry not a huge bionic commando fan....
Second tmnt is is different from turtles in time
Sorry not a huge bionic commando fan....
How does it feel to be dead inside?
Contra
Agreed. The Contra arcade games are kind of a mess and don't flow very well. The NES games are true classics.

Excellent honestly. These last two weeks have me so over joyed happiest I've been in awhile
Ninja Gaiden
Except for the fact that the NES Ninja Gaiden isn't a port of the arcade game. Try again:
UN Squardron/Area 88. SNES vesion is arguably better than the arcade version.
Contra is definately better than the arcade version, althought the arcade version of Super Contra is actually pretty good.
Gradius III is debatable but the arcade version is just way too hard for most people to get anywhere.

What are your thoughts on the Sega CD port?
