Needlessly confusing maze levels in games

Imagineering for the NES seems to be the king of the 'where the fuck do I go?!' games.  You know the type im talking about, where you have to go a certain way in order to reach the end... usually the last level.  Not talking about Metroidvania style games like Ghoul School.  Whats the worst?  Since im all about the NES im gonna think of a few that fit this description:

Bart Vs. The Space Mutants (last level)

Bart Meets Radioactive Man (last level)

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (last real level)

Cowboy Kid (last level)

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Taito (castle)

Gargoyle Quest 2 (mirror room)

Star Wars (a couple of them)

WURM (any platforming level but they're not too complicated)

Add some other non-NES games.

Out of these... im gonna go with Cowboy Kid and Indiana Jones.

  • Pyramid level in Pool of Radiance. Not sure on the Nes version, but it includes two things that suck in first person mazes, teleporters and spinners with no announcement they're there. Wizardry on Nes also has teleporrers like that, function slightly different though. And not sure on spinners.
  • Golgo 13 Top Secret Episode's Rio de Janeiro level.

Famicom Transformers has a pretty brutal follow the right path or it loops level.
  • Skate or Die 2's final level is a tire fire - and while I like it personally, the fireberry maze in Kyrandia 1 is notorious, so much so that they made light of it in the sequel.
  • There's a few pretty brutal maze levels in Monster Party - the Dark World Haunted Mansion in particular is a confusing one and it seems every time you make a wrong turn, you get punished.
  • In Dragon Warrior II, the cave before Rhone is a frustrating maze filled with deadly enemies. If you don't choose the correct path, it loops back to the beginning.

Yeah, but didn't we all have the fold out maps from the Nintendo Power promo?

I think it was only on the mail-away map.

It may well have been a separate mail-away, but I know my parents gave me the envelope with the maps shortly after the NP Dragon Warrior promo happened.

At the time, I assumed it all went together (that is, you get a free copy of DW1 and they gave you the promo material to get you pumped about the sequel)

  • Secret of Evermore, the ventilation shafts in Ivor Tower. Hard to see, can't tell where you are able to go, and locked doors everywhere, so you have to remember everywhere you've been. Some vents even lead back to other vents.

with the exception of a couple sections, the progression through most of each dungeon is fairly linear.

  • The cave squid maze in Space Quest 2. the maze itself was not to bad, but the commands you had to enter to be able navigate it were not very intuitive.
  • Myst when you ride the rail cart. I drew a map for that section on printer paper in the late nineties.

It's been awhile, but I thought there were audio cues for when you were on the right path.

I do remember jotting down the directions so if I revisted it I could breeze through it. I hated having to go back to the Selenitic Age because that ride took so damn long.

I didnt find the last stage to be the most confusing, I though that the 3rd lab stage to be the most confusing. Took me awhile to figure out that you have to invert gravity and go up a vent shaft. But I do agree that the final, final stage is a maze.

    And yet I wanted volumes 2 & 3
  • although i haven't played it much, i've been told the dungeons in Deadly Towers are absurd, with some dungeons having something like ~200 screens.

Yeah, but I wanted to add it because I just got it and beat it within the day I got it.  It was fairly easy, but that game was made by Imagineering and it reminded me of 'Oh an imagineering game, its gonna have a maze level' so it sparked the idea for this thread.

BTW I forgot about Monster Party... that 7th level is hell!  Totally what I was going for.  Also Uninvited has another maze section like that.

Games where the whole game is confusing (AHEM Goonies 2) I wasn't really looking for.  Mostly just levels where they added a maze thing just to extend the game and make it needlessly difficult or you need a map for.

  • Darm Tower in Ys Book I is brutal without a walkthrough.

I was going to mention this thinking no one would! I drew a map on graph paper for that maze.

I found out that Skate or Die and Ski or Die were both ported from PC games, or at least released on the PC first.  And Skate or Die 2 was NES exclusive I believe which is why its very different from the first one.

Yeah, I played the whole trilogy as a kid. Loved 'em. Criminally under-the-radar compared to Sierra and Lucas entries. Great visuals, sound, dialog, and user interface.

Yeah - there were, but it wasn't a lot of fun the first time through. Thankfully, the game was nice enough to come with a notebook and encourage its use, so good note-taking habits simplify it going forward.

  • What about maze levels in games that are otherwise straightforward? I had to consult a FAQ to get through the final level of Revenge of Shinobi. There's a similar maze in Shinobi 3, but it isn't as bad.
  • Faria is pretty darn hard and confusing, I think that may be worthy of your list.
  • TMNT 1, Hangar area before the Technodrome.

I know there's some kinda rng involved in which sewer that thing will appear in, but man is it frustrating navigating through what are, by far the toughest sewers in the game, just to find an empty room.

TMNT 1 isn't really a maze because you will always get to the end and you can see what room you're in.  The only thing is that some rooms are MUCH harder than others.

Also about Faria, i wouldn't know.  I sleep thru RPGs

I don't think I knew about these audio cues, not sure how I missed them. I built an entire map from trial and error. I remember I got to the underwater rail car in Riven and gave up on that one. I've always thought about revisitng it. Did Riven ever come out on a console?
