I decided to do Tales of Phantasia next (neat sound test; just like a top of the line stereo/studio

  • Ymir Lake and Treant Forest are the two best places to grind in the game. Yeah, the enemies are tough, but if you need to level, they are the places.
  • Yeah I did just finish the Forest (work smarter, not harder is especially wise advice here) and of course when we return to the village, Arche/Tweetie just has to try to slut her way out of trouble.    But I thought she liked ropes/bondage?

Anyway, onward to the 12 Star Tower I suppose?
  • Well, I somehow got through the Castle of Dhaos and it's now on to Mint's/Denise's Dream...does Level 40/39/39/38 sound about right at this point?
  • I always like to stay under-leveled on purpose, so if you feel comfortable at the level you're at, keep pushing forward
  • Well under-leveled is for those who done the game at least a few times.  The Unicorn will only meet the "purest of girls", eh?  I guess that means Arche the Bondage Slut is out of the running

Woah!  Arche/Tweetie just got pushed back from the Unicorn's pad!  Well that's what she gets for being so, eh, easy
  • So now in the famous words of Doc Brown, I just went BACK TO THE FUTURE!!   And I guess next stop is Volt's Cavern. I named that fifth guy Lance after my most inspirational HS teacher, the one who helped me become student manager for baseball and football and most importantly, inspired me to go to UK and helped me along, especially helping me not get discouraged because despite my best efforts, I didn't make as good grades as I would've liked (I finished with a 2.54 GPA, or a B/C average)
  • Nice! So now the question is, who is in your fighting party of four?

What I did first was have Lance (the fifth guy) in place of either Jamiee/Tweetie, whichever had the lower EP until they were both about the same.  I only did that in the overworld though...in dungeons I play it safe and have the original four.

I now have the Airships and I'm at Level 47/46/45/45/27

Awwww, how cute...in Freezekill you and everyone in town leaves footprints in the snow! ^^  And in Ary your shadow direction moves as you pass the light...gee even after 25 years the SNES is just full of surprises in terms of what it can do, even the little things

And now for some reason I'm wanting to get a Super Famicom controller so I can have the colorful action buttons which this game does use the colors of the buttons as well as letters...

Hee hee, they even do this joke!

  • Oh yeah. The graphics and little touches in this game are absolutely incredible.

And I love the scene in Ary between Mint and Cless. One of my favorite moments in the game.
  • So now I'm working on the Odin's Tower...it looks to be pretty tough (it'll help to get those Nymph's Rings apparently; I got two so far) so I'll have to do it in sections. After all I can easily upon exiting the tower recharge at nearby Olive Village, so why not?
  • So I cleared Odin's Tower and then Fenrir's Cavern (which was surprisingly easy compared to Odin's Tower for some reason...), then I went to the Lost Woods to get the Master Sword, eh I mean to Treant's Forest to get the Eternal Sword.  Now all that's left is Graham's Treasure Hunt (I should do that first right?), the final dungeon (Dhaos Castle), as well as the super secret bonus one that you have to be at Level 60 (at least for Cless) to enter.  I only meet the minimum requirement for it and it's supposed to be really tough so I should do the Treasure Hunt and clean out Dhaos Castle first right?
  • Do the Treasure Hunt first, for sure. If I remember correctly, you don't want to beat Dhaos Castle, but you do want to clear out some of it to get weapons/armor/magic.
  • Yeah wouldn't it be wiser to clear out all the chests from Dhaos Castle first before taking on the Final Boss? In any game like Zelda where there's chests in a dungeon, the dungeon isn't really beat unless you clear all the chests (especially from Links Awakening onward where the chests are marked on the map).
  • Yes it would. I'm also thinking the chests will be helpful to get you through the Morlia Gallery, though, before you return to Dhaos Castle.
  • Well the Treasure Hunt part is done...
  • Nice, man! You are cranking through this game!
  • Yeah can you believe that scene in Ninja Village where the dirty little slut, eh I mean Arche/Tweetie in the hot spring tells Mint/Denise that she has the biggest eh, somethings she's ever seen! And of course it makes Mint/Denise turn red in embarrassment!   I mean I guess Denise's (my wife remember) eh, somethings are a decent size but I don't know about the biggest! hee hee...

And then the fifth character (I named him Lance after my former teacher who inspired me to go to UK) gets a bucket of water thrown at him by the girls for being a nosy Peeping Tom! I can see it now had Tales of Phantasia made it to the US uncensored...

Tales of Phantasia only for Super NES...rated M for Mature (the game does drop an f-bomb and I think it only takes a couple in a movie for an automatic R)
  • Yep. It definitely has its moments.
  • I've now completed the first half(?) of Dhao's Castle and now I'm at the start of the eh, purple part...I'm now at the save point right before that first boob looking thing that's labeled 6's on the VGAtlas map (yes I'm using maps deal with it).

You think Levels 80/78/77/76/48 should be enough for Lower Morlia B19, B20, B21 (the super secret bonus dungeon) and then the Final Boss?

I have cleaned out Lower Morlia up to Floor 18 so far, so there's just B19, B20, B21 to go.
  • Whew, I finally finished up Lower Morlia and what a job that was! So now I'm about to take on the Final Boss...I sure hope Level 90/89/89/88/48 will be enough!  Took me an even 47 hours to get to this point!  I think I got my money's worth on this one.
  • Well I did show that Final Boss who's boss! The ending was quite, eh, emotional and I loved the neat artwork shown on the final end screen   I really did enjoy this game, I would say it was a shame this game didn't make it to the US, but maybe the fact that it did not is a blessing in disguise. After all the Japanese intro song and the cute voices in battle obviously would not have been kept in, and think of the censorship that no doubt would've been imposed.

And yes I do have Tales of Symphoia for GC (I was lucky enough to get a new copy several months back for a good price)...but I'm more in the 8-bit/16-bit mood at the moment. I think I'll do Dragon Warrior 4 next, what do you guys think?
  • Glad to hear that you enjoyed it. I didn't as much this time around, but the last couple of games have just felt like a drag by then end so maybe that's just me. I did start playing Magical Vacation for the GBA and am finding the level of story telling to be exactly what I've been missing with some of the SNES era ones though. Not sure on DWIV, but some folks seem to like it. So many different versions to choose from (NES, SNES, DS), which would you do?
  • DW4 didn't get a SNES version.   Which is a real shame because all the others in the first six did. The reason I want to go with DW4 next is because I already did the first three at least a couple times each (I have both NES and SNES repo versions) and I've heard that DW5 is very highly regarded (I have repo of both that and DW6).

I don't like the DS versions because one, I always prefer to play my games on the TV with a controller whenever possible and besides that, I personally think the DS versions compared to the NES/SNES versions look and play kinda weird

And you wanna talk about how important first impressions are?  Well they are but they're not always right.  My first impression upon meeting Arche/Tweetie was all like, "Awww, what a cute little girl! ^^" but then very soon after my jaw literally was in shock at the ship where she's eh, soliciting the captain and my second impression became more like, "What a dirty little slut..."

I bet I'll never have a moment like that in any RPG again!
  • Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I'm curious to see what you thought of the ending.

    *SPOILERS*

I was disappointed in the reveal about Dhaos. I felt it wasn't very well explained. He was the villain the whole time, and then suddenly we were supposed to feel bad for him? It was very frustrating because I loved the rest of the story right up until that point. I even replayed the final boss fight again to make sure I didn't miss any dialogue that would've helped explain the sudden change.

    *END SPOILERS*

As for next, I have not played DW4 (it's on my list, though). If I may recommend one, even if it's after DW4, play Energy Breaker. It's and SRPG, but it's not too intense like Ogre Battle or something like that--much more manageable. It's honestly the best non-USA-released RPG I've ever played (and I've played Terranigma, Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Seiken Densetsu 3/Secret of Mana 2, Treasure Hunter G, etc.). I highly recommend it.
  • Did they make a translated rom? If so I most likely have it on my SD2SNES.

I think I mostly got what Dhaos was saying and up to. It was sad that he felt he had to take this step. And that was also said the way the girls were crying (remember I did love the cute emoticons and the hearts used in the dialog).

And that's what I love most about 16-bit/4th gen RPGs that just can't be done the same way again, the way the sprite characters did their cute emotions/gestures like say, in FF6. And it was an especially nice touch that during the PS1 version's loading screen, the character does that finger thing at you as if to say "Uh, uh, uh, don't you even THINK about touching that memory card or power button!"
  • Yes. I have a repro of it.

Yeah. It's definitely a depressing situation, and it is great how well they were able to convey emotion. The emoticons were an excellent touch.
  • Probably all the more reason the 16-bit/SNES era was the golden age of RPGs. They can give show the characters emotions and such in such a way I don't think was ever really possible before or since. I mean, who could forget arguably the most iconic scene in FF history, FF6's opera and how they creatively made them sound like they were singing? I know originally they did want to have them really sing like ToP had but honestly I don't think it would've been quite the same.
  • Oh yeah. The emotion is incredibly well done. FF6 is certainly a shining example of that. I haven't thought about how actual singing would affect it, but I think that you may be right. There's something beautiful in the simplicity of the scene that helps convey the emotion so much better.

As a continued plug for Energy Breaker, I will say there are some little symbols like hearts and light bulbs and whatnot during dialogue.
  • Oh yeah and what's up with SNES FF characters when waiting to making certain moves looking like they're picking their nose? Ewwww...
  • Well, you know, booger-flicking can cause serious damage!
