If anyone has played Deadly Premonition and knows of similar type games that blend cop mysteries with horror/the supernatural - please let me know.
glad to see another fan! My favorite game of the 7th generation, it made me watch Twin Peaks on Netflix and I binged watched the whole thing. Loved it. Not the most technically good game, but the charm, characters, setting, and pretty much everything York says is amazing.
Nothing has beaten (or even come close to, really) EarthBound for my #1 favorite video game of all time, ever since I first played it 20 years ago. #'s 2 thru 10 have done some shifting but not drastically. But I sincerely doubt any game I play between now and my death will overtake EarthBound. The game was just the absolute perfect game for me at the absolute perfect time and the one game that felt almost as if it was made specifically for me.
I don't think anything will ever replace Ocarina of Time for me. Everything about it is perfect to me, and the time in my life that I first played it kind of ensures it will always be number one.
GoldenEye 007 for the N64. Spent far too much time playing and hacking this game. It's the main game I collect for, and actively search out on eBay on a regular basis. Has a very special place in my heart. Hell, I still work on mods for it, as well as its spiritual successor Perfect Dark.
Other games I would have considered my favourite at one time...
I have a muddled top 3 that aren't really ranked. I guess you could say they're all tied for #1. Dragon Warrior IV, Final Fantasy II (SNES), and Illbleed for the Dreamcast.
For anyone looking for something that pulls your brain out through your ears and plays hackeysack with it, Illbleed is...man, it's probably what you're looking for. I know very little about Deadly Premonition (besides the Twin Peaks comparison), and I would have to assume they're not that similar in general theme. Just that there is absolutely nothing out there like Illbleed and it definitely screws with you.

man I picked up illbleed so long ago. I need to play that
I don't know what my favorite game is either. Do we base this off of number of hours you've spent playing any one game, or the game you've played through the most or what? I love dragon quest monsters joker, but I also love the main series Pokémon games, Zelda wind waker, Zelda link to the past, paper Mario the thousand year door, yugioh games, Mario strikers charged, and probably more. Point is its hard to decide which one is actually my favorite.
Batman NES was and still is. I've added games I've discovered to my favoriteS, but nothing has dethroned the Dark Knight yet.
It's the only game I committed to no-deathing, and the only one I've seriously given thought to trying to speedrun.
The Joker is still one of the hardest final boss fights on the NES. I can usually breeze through the game until I get to him, and he can still kick my ass, even though I've no-deathed the game multiple times. The gun taking almost half your health if you happen to get shot is the worst part.
Goldeneye 007 always and forever. Nostalgia plays a big part in your favorite game of all time and you'll never get that same feeling from a game you just experienced in the present.

I got a copy in a gift exchange a few years ago and played it six times straight. I'm probably overhyping it but it was the game I'd been waiting for all my life without even realizing it.

The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening was my absolute favorite game as a kid, and it always will be. For me my Top 3 has never changed my entire life.
#1 Link's Awakening
#2 Kirby Super Star
#3 Super Mario RPG
Donkey Kong Country used to be #4, but Luigi's Mansion kicked it down to #5, and Sonic Colours for Wii finally knocked it off my Top 5. Sonic Colours was the last modern game that made a huge impact on me. It was everything a modern mascot game needed to be, and was absolutely brilliant.
I have no clue what my favorite game is. I don't know what it would even mean: is it the game I play the most? If so, do we mean gameplay hours or individual sessions? Does it have to be one I want to replay repeatedly? (I don't usually replay games after beating them, unless I'm helping with a contest or competing for high score.)
Is it the one with the most nostalgia? The one I think is "the best"? The one I identify with the most, in whatever sense? The one with the best music?
I've been waiting over 20 years for a game to replace Super Metroid as my favorite. I've beaten it like 30 times and it's the only game I've beaten more than three times so I would surely hope it's my favorite game lol. Every time I replay it I think I'm going to find a reason to dislike it but the only complaint I have is that it ends. The music, sound effects, and controls all are perfect, and I love that you can access later stages in the game if you are mechanically good enough (and it doesn't feel like you're cheating or glitching). Actually I think the non-linearity is what I love the most about it.
I love games like FF6 or Chrono Trigger too, but I think in the end I prefer games that are more about mechanics than decision-making (games like Mario or Zelda).
I want to throw a contest on this site with a grand prize worth over $250, before I can even start it. I need to get my hands on the last region release copy of my favorite video game.
It has yet to pop on eBay but when it comes, I'll be ready as all hell.
I have too short of an attention span to have a favorite game. Depending on the week it could be tysons punchout, smw, actraiser, mario 64, dr mario 64, halo 2, red dead redemption, or the latest installment of NBA 2k...
I agree with this. Much like music, while I'm playing a certain song/album/band, some games give me a feeling like, "this is perfect and nothing can ever top it." or "I never want to play anything else." But multiple things give me that feeling.
my favorite game of all time has to be harvest moon 64. I still enjoy it a ton and play it often, and that mixed with my fond memories of playing it growing up makes it highly unlikely a new game will ever dethrone it. Far cry 3 is the most modern game to have ever challenged it for the top spot, and came decently close. Easily my second favorite game, and the only more modern game that makes my top ten.

My favorite will always be Super Mario World, that's not going to change.

have you tried The Evil Within?
Yes.
Strangely though, I didn't jive with that game.
Instead of being a cop in a Twin Peaks type town and sprinkling in some supernatural stuff (like Silent Hills "Hell World")
The Evil Within felt very heavy and did not introduce the depth and character development of Deadly Premonition.
My son actually suggested The Evil Within and was really surprised I didn't like it.
The Evil Within certainly falls within these guidelines though so good call on that BBC.
Seeing as you liked Indigo Prophecy you should try Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls and Until Dawn.
Then, I realized it was actually ALTTP all along
Other games I would have considered my favourite at one time...
Super Mario World
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Donkey Kong Country
Resident Evil 2
Metal Gear Solid

Contra and Donkey Kong Country, never changing for sure.
Mix them. Make Donkey Kong Contra-y.

Closely followed by Castlevania for NES, Golden Axe for PC and montezuma's revenge for Atari

Then Super Mario 3D Land is a close second. Only Mario plat-former I've finished 100% four times.
Very mood-specific.
