Gaming budget...

Hey guys! you have probably seen my threads about being new and not knowing whether to start collecting complete snes games or loose snes and nes carts...Well I'm still really undecided, I am on a quite strict gaming budget and don't have a lot of money to blow right now...I got some good CIB offers on the table but they are still quite expensive, I'm not into collecting jsut to collect I like to play snes and nes too so if you were me on this strict budget would you Just buy a few CIB games a month or would you go for loose only as its obviously cheaper and easier to find in the "wild" and just collect a ton of carts? another thing is if i bought loose carts I could always go back and try to purchase manuals and boxes for them when i had extra money couldn't I? Please help as like I said I have quite a few people wanting me to buy some CIB games...Thank you!

  • I would just cruise for bulk lots in your case. If you only buy the real good deals, you can flip the ones you don't need. It gets expensive buying things one at a time. If you are patient and aren't looking for anything in particular, you would be surprised at how quick you can build your collection for cheap. You can even collect for free by selling the extras.
  • Totally agree. Take you time with it and Collecting CIB can be absolutely free.
  • ^^^All very true. I funded my entire collection by buying/reselling games. I'm up about 700 games and haven't lost any money at all. Most people that have a strict budget fund their collecting like this. It takes time, but it works.
  • if you're real lucky you can even turn a pretty decent profit

Totally free? haha...so the consensus would be to just buy large lots of loose cartridges? I try selling reselling my games to get more games but its tough when you don't have very many to sell and your trying to get a collection going...any other tips on that subject or the best way to start out...as of right now I have about 30-40 NES games and about 40 SNES games, so that isn't alot to resell considering I'm trying to collect haha...all tips are greatly appreciated!!

can you clarify what selling the extras means please? Just wanna makes sure on I'm on the same page with what your talking about...also when it does come to selling I would like to sell on here but since I'm new, everyone thinks I'm trying to phish money, but I have a 100% Ebay feedback with 75 feedbacks...Would i be more successful selling games on here or on Ebay do you honestly think?
  • What were trying to explain by reselling is:

Buy "lots" of many games. A lot is bundle of games whether it be 5 games or 50 games its still a "lot." Then from this keep the games you would like to keep or dont have and sell the rest.

The pros to this are that games are almost always cheaper when purchased in lots and certain more valuble titles could be found in these lots that might not catch the attention of the person looking for just that game. It can help you break even to sell off extra stuff in the lot that you may already have or it can even make you money depending on how lucky you get with the price.

I'll even elaborate with a bit more detail.

There's two ways to collect, let's say you have $100 you want to spend on games.  One type of collector would just take that $100 and buy whatever they want, whether it be carts or CIBs.  The "reseller" type of collector would find one big lot, or multiple smaller lots to spend that $100 on, then turn around and sell-off everything he bought.  Maybe you get $150 back and next time you spend that $100 on more lots and $50 on your personal things.  Or if you are lucky (or patient), you are bound to come across lots that actually contain some items on your personal wants list and you'll be killing two birds with one stone.

    Make sense?

  • Whatever you do, stay within your means. Never try to play "catch up" with other collectors as this can lead to financial ruin. There are a few members of this site that are in financial trouble because they can't control their spending. Just take your time and always remember that there's no such thing as a "one time only" opportunity to get those rare items -- they always surface again.

A great way to collect CIB, if you go that route, is to buy in bulk as others have mentioned, then trade or sell of the extras to pay for the ones you kept. This is how I paid for a good majority of my NES set.
  • I know this is probably a bad place to ask this but would it be easier for me to sell on this site or on Ebay image? (but seriously)...just asking because like i said I'm new so people might not buy from me, but  i do have a perfect Ebay score
  • You wont have fees here. If I didn't sell here, I would on CTCW. Doing BST on this site will introduce you to some really cool people.
  • Better to sell mid-rares or rares here, and sometimes you even get bites on common CIBs too. But if you are going to be selling stuff like Marios and other common popular stuff then you'll do much better on eBay.

I do this. I upgrade condition (since Im picky) on mine and sell off extras and downgraded copies. I have a seperate bank acount just for collecting and have NEVER in 7 years had yo use my family money to buy anything for my collection. In fact I have plenty in there to buy lots of different stuff. image

Listen to what this guy says. He may be old and senile, but that is wise advice.

I said it in your other thread - its not a race. Take your time... Just because some of us here have complete collections, doesn't mean that you need to have one next week. It took most of us years upon years to do it.
  • Yeah, I meant your doubles when I said extras. You will likely have good luck selling less common titles and CIBs here as long as you pass on the savings from not paying fees. I don't think people will dislike you selling at all. People show up here and have FS threads up in 2 posts. I know because I have jumped on a couple already.

You should save a couple hundred bucks if you can and build an initial stock. Only go for the smoking deals and it will pay for itself in no time. And I mean if its not an obvious steal, don't buy it! You will eventually see a return on your investment while at the same time keeping the titles that you need as they come in. The key is to learn to balance your stock. If you like to sell in bulk lots like I do, it is good to have some commons to beef them up, but you don't want 75 copies of Bandai Golf.

  • I agree with everything here, as well image.  As others have mentioned, though, take your time and be patient.  When you're new here, it is very tempting to play the "catch up" game and try to get a super collection fast.  Even if you're only looking for a few specifics, it's always better to wait for a good deal than to jump on everything you want at once.

As for the whole buying and selling of lots, let me be the first to say that while that is a good way to build a sizable collection on the cheap, it's also very time consuming.  You have a to spend a fair amount of time (or at least be a frequent checker) of NES listings on ebay, and reselling your extras can be very time consuming when you factor in all the shipping and handling that takes place when you're trying to unload dozens or hundreds of carts.  I'm not saying don't do it, just be aware that there's a lot of effort involved, and if you don't enjoy the process it can quickly feel like a second job.

Personally, I only buy a few games here and there for my collection, and I'm very picky.  I don't have a lot of time to devote to hunting down the best deals, but since I'm in no hurry, I don't mind paying more here and there.  You're spending a lot no matter what method of collecting you choose; it's either time or money that you'll spend a lot of.
  • Thanks for all the selections guys...I have to admit after I looked at all those collection photos I was like wow I need all that ASAP...but back to reality haha I just have to have fun with it and collect when the right deal comes along..
  • You might want to keep an eye on the "Random good buy it now" thread. Often times there are listing in there that you could profit off of.
